This guy uses a battery operated amp because electricity is not always available in his country! Wow...think about that for a second. We take so much for granted. This dude is for real, he's got the spirit.
It's so amazing watching this man make a name for himself in the Western music world without the influence of pop music, without managers or producers. And to see him so open hearted and humble makes me feel emotional. It's the ultimate success story.
Don’t mean to be rude I appreciate your sentiment, but Africa is a continent (most diverse and second largest on earth as well) he comes from the country of Niger (pronounced Neeshjer). I’m from South Africa and it’s kind of a pet peeve for myself and many other African people haha. Still thanks for the sentiment!
I saw Mdou and his band at a small venue was really struck at just how "psychedelic" his tones were. There was definitely a Hendrix thing happening but it wasn't like your typical bar band Hendrix wannabe, it was cosmic and soulful and touched on something very rare and colorful. The tempos of the band were all over the place within the songs but that also allowed the music to take on a life of it's own. Go see him if you get the chance.
@@Claytone-Records of course not. This is actually a nigerien tune but far northern states in Nigeria - which are Hausa by the way - share borders with the Niger Republic. (Note that I said nigerien not Nigerian, nigerien is Niger's, Nigerian Nigeria's)
this mans technique is beyond brilliant. I love his enthusiasm and vibrancy. music is the best way for us to understand one another. I hope i can see him live someday.
Reserved Hogs i mean that he probably missed the word 'new' in the question. I think that if he knew the interviewer was specifically asking about music released recently he wouldnt mention hendrix
Mdou Moctar is an exceptional human being.Clever and even overgifted,a true man of genius. His playing is something out of this world. He deserves respect and support from the guitar world Thank you very much for this interview.Dweezil is also a great guy, would be amazing watch Mdou performing with Zappa
Mdou has a few different tunings he uses (from low to high) with capo usually on the third fret: E A D G B E (standard) G A D G B E G A# D G B E When playing live, both rhythm guitar and bass are tuned up: F A# D# G# C F
I was lucky enough to see Mdou Moctar on tour in the states. If you have the opportunity, I cannot recommend it enough. One of the best rock shows I've ever seen. Awesome songs, guitar, and backing band.
Man Jimi Hendrix was channeling Mdou Moctar's people's music without even knowing it. Just amazing! Sweet jam at the end of the video! This guy is a testament to human ingenuity!
I was fortunate enough to see a screening of the "Akounak" film in Philly the week after Prince passed and I went right home and bought the soundtrack album. I was really touched by the story and Mdou's music and I'm really happy to see that he's getting this kind of recognition. Phenomenal player.
This came up on my feed, watched the whole episode without straying away or wondering how did I get here? Great interview, didn’t know he was D zappa, until I read the comments. He did a fantastic interview. Moctar is a rare talent. Internet is great
I just started getting into Saharan rock and Mdou is way up there on my list of favorites. This was an excellent glimpse into him as a person and a musician. Thanks for sharing!
Mdou nous sommes fier de toi. Mdou est l'un des rare musiciens touaregs qui joue uniquement ses morceaux. Il a son propre style. Merci frère et bon vent.
It's honestly a testament to his playing that he can rock that Roland cube the way he does. I mean they're decent amps but he makes it sound like serious business. I have NO IDEA how he picks that fast with his finger but it sounds ace and original 👌.
I love this man! I have been obsessed with this genius, their music is my inspiration for woodworking. Each time I carve (axe, knife and chisel ) I put their Ilana the creator cd and disappear in that beautiful spiritual journey. Im forever grateful 🙏 ❤
I just recently learned about him and a few other musicians from the Sahara region. He's amazing. I would recommend anyone who likes his music to listen to his song Tarhatazed. I can't put into words what it evokes and the whole cohesion of the band coming together during the song.
I'm so excited live Toureg music is making the rounds in rocknroll circles, it's the latest full circle of mother africa root material coming back to influence modern sounds again like it influenced blues music in the past century
He used a bicycle brake cable to build his first guitar! He "untwisted" the cable to get the strings. There you have it, a five-string guitar. "Boom like that".
This is great, its nice to hear such a distinctive guitar player in 2018, i was shocked when he said he listened to Hendrix in 2015. Oh, and Dweezil nails the interview as always, keep em coming.
Wow I play mainly with the thumb and the index like him (not so fast and so well obviously) and I have the same mini amp (a good old Roland micro cube - he's right, it got everything here) This guy is my new guitar hero...
Great Interview, only a Zappa explores everywhere, Hopefuly there will be another one where he talks more in depth about his pedals, his sound, tunings, scales etc I would buy his instructional DVD anyday, not to copy his sound but be able to incorporate some of these elements only people living in the desert know
I also use my fingers because it feels much more natural and I feel like you have more control and you can also do creative tricks like his quick finger movement one.
Same I'm mainly using my fingers, I developped my style like that, I feel too limited (and boring) when I use a pick (futhermore I come from the ukulele where fingerpicking is the rule) Also it's much easier to play some stuff (like octaves) with the fingers
its very warming to know someone loved music anf wanted to play so badly that they went out of their way to make their own guitar out of bicycle cables.

I know right?!
Rich people start playing guitar and they buy a 2K fender, 10 peddles and a massive amp haha.
There is video of this guy band playing in live Niger and they have plenty of amps. Excellent show.
This guy had to MAKE his first guitar. That's incredible. Super inspiring..
He played the bicycle :-) Like Frank!
If this guy can make his own guitar I can practice 20 damn minutes a day

Nah, this sounds like sub Saharan music, I've heard most of those melodies from the Hausa people.

Love how he refers to Hendrix as new music. Every music is new music if you're listening for the first time. Huge respect Mdou, keep rocking!

God that story of building his own guitar with bike cables is humbling. Impressive dude.
This is one of the coolest stories on the internet.

Right? He's so authentic and down to earth
we forget how little some have and we take it all for granted. Makes me think of how a gift can change a persons life.
The only Tuareg artist I knew of before watching this was Bombino. Thanks for sharing another story of an artist speaking their musical mind.
Thanks for tuning in!
