Dan's a professional critic - before I listened to Dan I had no time for such things. Now I see it's a science unto itself? it's a masterclass and I love it :)
They just need to slow the f--- down and get the scripts right. They're so determined to stick to their schedule that they're not giving the movies the care that they need on the script side. They have to keep that schedule, that machine, moving on a certain schedule, regardless of whether they have the scripts or not. It shows the flaw in the interconnectedness of the MCU: if your primary concern is keeping the schedule, then it's not the scripts. This actually demonstrates why Agents of SHIELD basically cut ties with trying to tie in to the movies at a certain point. They couldn't do what they wanted to do with the show because they were having to pause to tie in to the movies, and adjust to what they were doing. After Age Of Ulton, they basically said, "Bye," spent some time in season three trying to find their own footing, and then started running at a full sprint with season four. Just _slow_ the _f--- down_ .
I think they are doing that. I heard they just moved some D+ shows into next year. Secret Invasion, Xmen 97, and Loki s2 are for sure coming out this year. Maybe What If s2 will come out this year. With Bob Igor back, I think Marvel will tone down the volume on content.
Dan, I’m really glad you don’t rush to compete with everyone else trying to get box office results in asap. I think “owns” is a strong word. This was definitely before the era where he had direct creative control, particularly when it comes to Hulk. I think the quality difference before and after the MCU, where he had more control, is indicative that the movies got stronger as he took a bigger role
After looking at the results of Thor Love and Thunder and Quantumania, *CLEARLY* the audience is saying they hate the recent MCU trend of making bipolar movies that can't decide if they are emotional dramas or ridiculous comedies.

The last Ant Man Movie coming off Infinity War only made $622m. I think box office analysts were expecting too much from this movie. If Quantumania makes $600m that's good. Love and Thunder made more money than Ragnarok (minusing China) and people said it was a disaster. The Marvels got out of the way of The Flash, that's all. I wonder how much of the 2nd weekend drop correlates to families skipping the theater release. Taking a family to the theater is extremely expensive anymore... Better to just wait for the Disney+ release
Absolutely, WOM is key here. When a big tentpole film like this isn't great, cinemagoers encourage family & friends to save money & wait for the film to drop on D+, even If they have to wait till ~July. Going to the cinema with family is expensive now, so folks are rightfully being selective about what they go to watch there.
I kind wish I'd waited. Same with HBOMax and Black Adam. I only saw that in a theater because Halloween was boring, and I still should have found something else to do. Few weeks later, there it is on streaming already.

What about Bear movies by quality? That starts with The Bear (88). Twas a life changing experience, as a little child, watching that baby bear trip on mushrooms on the big screen.
Unfair to put Black Widow in these second week drop lists because of the simultaneous disney+ and theaters release strategy. Disney set up Black Widow to fail theatrically in order to undercut Scarjo's salary and promote their streaming service.
> in order to undercut Scarjo's salary I seriously doubt that. WB was also doing Day and Date streaming releases on HBO Max. These were attempts to adapt to the covid situation. Yes, Disney's managers tried to take advantage of the situation, but that's what business people do, hold on to as much money as they can. WB also famously screwed over their actors and producers (directors, etc.)
It’s part of the list because it’s part of the franchise but I also later said “2021 is hard to quantify because of the pandemic.” And I specifically cited Black Widow and its availability on Disney+. So I didn’t ignore that.
@@1monki The difference is the simultaneous disney+ and theaters release strategy was not in Scarjo's contract. This is why she took Disney to court and they settled aka she paid her what she was owed.
@@backto-il9ne I'm not arguing that, I'm saying they didn't stream it day and date just to screw her over. They had a market reason to stream it. And since they weren't required contractually to pay her the revenue from that, they didn't. Something like this was always going to wind up in court. Disney's managers are required to keep as much money as they can get away with. A court was going to decide what was fair at some point regardless
Hey Dan, I love the road to recovery chart. I was wondering when looking at the weekend from a box office past if it would be insightful to maybe add a 2000 to 2010 line as well. It would give additional context because looking at 90s or 00s weekends (adjusted for inflation) they feel very similar to box office rn. So I was thinking have the last 5 years pre-pandemic been a general upswing in ticket sales and how much difference has the pandemic made in a much larger context. Is this a permanent change or relatively long but temporary one.
Big Stephen Colbert vibes on deep diving in to the goings on of a small, local community. Loved it! Curiosity as a sports/wrestling fan…do the Nielsen ratings for streaming take in to account special events? This year won’t matter, but last year I know I watched the Super Bowl on Peacock. And then this week would have been the Royal Rumble on Peacock as the former WWE Network is now part of Peacock. While I know it’s a fairly niche market, I was just curious what a bigger event would draw for Peacock viewership and if that was even something tracked. Thanks for the great work as always!
Was not expecting that big a drop. But then there was the siren song of a film about a bear off its butt on cocaine the following week. Actually, I have resisted that song till tonight.
I can't believe you mentioned the Waldo. I grew up in Maine and most Mainers don't even know about it. I would love it if each week you highlighted a small, indie, or locally owned theatre from a different state and what films they're showing. That would be amazing.
Ever since Disney+ launched it has killed the legs on Marvel movies as you know you only need to wait 45 days. My family dont like multiverse/dimensional travel stuff and p4 has gone wayyyy too far that direction. Widow was grounded but too early after Covid, but even Spiderman used the premise.
Something I have noticed about Puss in Boots international box office the last 2 weeks, is that it was supposed to be released on February 17th in Japan, but as of today, in both box office mojo & the numbers it appears as if the film is at $0.
International box office reporting is spotty on both sites, sadly. The latest information I could find is that it's scheduled to come out there on March 17th.
Cassie Lang is contending for worst MCU character ever. "Just don't be a dick". Does someone get paid to write this dialogue? What a great hero and role model
Will we be getting more anime reviews soon? Also you're lucky to just be waiting for the "final" season of AoT. Season 1 came out in 2013 & season 2 didn't happen until 2017.😭
'Multiverse of Madness' and 'Thor: Love and Thunder' soured me. Those were some poorly told and directed movies; wasted characters left and right, unnecessary and absolutely dumb humor, character changes that make no sense and are in stark contrast to who those characters have been, and so on. It doesn't even matter if Quantamania was a masterpiece. I have zero interest in seeing any future Marvel movies in theaters until they can prove that they are better than Phase 4 and so far, shows included, they haven't.
I realize how CYNICAL everyone is with Marvel, when a 69.9% drop is not a 70% drop. If it was with DC, people would call it like it is: A huge 70% drop.
"I really don't get the hate" or "I don't understand why people don't like this movie. I loved it" are the most used lines on any Marvel post. Someone: (Explains why the movie doesn't work). MCU Fan: "You're just a hater. I really don't get the hate."
That's for any franchise, really. People were defending the Snyderverse until they ran out of breath despite its diminishing returns at the box office and consistent negative reviews. Even the most universally panned film will have its defenders.
@@benjamintillema3572 You are right. I noticed that with the Snyderverse fans as well and felt exasperated. And lately, this has become apparent with MCU fans.
Back in 1996, as a 13-year-old boy, I was living in Stockholm (Sweden) and went to this event when you more or less paid nothing for a full day of movies. So of course, as a movie geek, I saw "Rumble in the Bronx" (amongst other movies). Theater which had roughly 1000 seats was PACKED and the audience went bonkers. Still love the movie and that was kinda when everything Chan started dropping on the VHS scene in Sweden (introduced me to Michelle Yeoh btw), but whoa! The audience experience is something that I will never forget. Usually I want to experience a movie as a movie. But the cheering, laughing from the audience was riveting.
I feel so bad for being rude and leaving a nasty comment about how you pronounced Emily Bronte last week! I'm very sorry. You do great work Dan. Keep being awesome.

Since Endgame, I've only loved No Way Home and Wakanda Forever. No Way Home was a perfect movie for me whereas Wakanda Forever felt different than the uber jokey movies/shows had become lately, it felt like a cool slow burn drama/action movie.
Endgame was such a good wrap up of all that came before it. I still enjoy the newer MCU movies but it definitely hasn't been the same. I agree on No Way Home and Wakanda Forever being the best of the recent lot.
I don't know if you're including TV shows, but I really loved WandaVision--to the point where it might be my favorite MCU story. (And Loki was a close runner-up.) Based on those alone, I was REALLY looking forward to Multiverse of Madness. I ultimately was very disappointed in that--it just felt so inconsistent in the characterizations of both Wanda AND the multiverse they'd established thus far. And the way they just turned Wanda into a agency-free plot device felt outright lazy.
I think the one factor that I was hoping Dan mention that in California had one of the craziest winter storms even snowing in Los Angeles California. I truly feel the really horrible weather in southern california played a factor into why ant man box office drop was so severe. I noticed nobody factored that in but when east coast had artic blast, it was mentioned why box office suffered.
I was in LA last weekend - it was raining pretty hard on Friday night, but cleared up by Saturday. The snow was at high elevations. Not sure how much of a factor that was.

I'm hoping the MCU Rebooted after Secret Wars after Hugh Jackman, Halle, Nick Cage, and RDJ returns. Then we'll have Ironman meeting Mr Fantastic, and Cap work with Wolverine. They can keep Tom Holland, Benedict, F4 etc and reboot everyone else. Then we'll have a New(ish) DCU and MCU that's hopefully better for us all at the same time
I feel that the most interesting point and possibility that someone made about Creed 3's box office, is that the tepid response to Ant-Man 3 might actually hurt its overall numbers as well. Been checking the showtimes at the big theaters in NYC, specifically Thursday previews, and only half the premium theaters were filled. I have a gut feeling that film is heading for a soft opening. On top of the many hurdles the film has (the drama with Stallone and the rights holder of Rocky) and the somewhat muted response to the film (not critically but in regards to hype and excitement for it).
Back in college (in 2001!), I had to watch the 1988 Chocolat to do a report for my History of French Black Africa and the Caribbean class. That movie was AWFUL!!!

Yes, Disney's managers tried to take advantage of the situation, but that's what business people do, hold on to as much money as they can. WB also famously screwed over their actors and producers (directors, etc.)
Especially when he qualifies The Suicide Squad's inclusion on the list for that exact reason.
So the quality dropped and so did the cinema score and the people's interest?
Shocker!
On the market share graph, could you indicate how many movies each of the major studios have released to contribute to their percentage?
Would love the independent theater showcase, even if you do it once in awhile. That was just so delightful
My Momma always said life is like the Box Office of Chocolat.
Dan: "and because I wanted to keep going down this rabbit hole"
Me: deeper into the bear den
Please make highlighting random arthouse theaters in North America a recurring segment on the show.
Rick - and - Morty - dialogue.
The formula for big budget comic book films is clear to me. Bad RT score + Bad Cinema score = big weekend to weekend drop.
I think overall Paddington caused more destruction in his first movie than Cocaine Bear did.
Word of Mouth killed Ant-man 3
That, and the movie being shit probably didn't help .
@@Robinripley Yeah but you only know that from word of mouth if you don't go see it yourself.
MCU fatigue killed it for me. Haven’t seen a new one since Dr. Strange. There’s just too much
Word of mouth is killing the MCU since End Game. That's expected when you release bad movies.
@@bobbyrigo7675 I agree although I did see Wakanda Forever. Meh
Been really enjoying these
"You had to fuck with the magic Bob!"
- Mouse, Mickey.
I completely agree with you about what’s going on with Marvel now! The data really does say so much.
I realize how CYNICAL everyone is with Marvel, when a 69.9% drop is not a 70% drop. If it was with DC, people would call it like it is: A huge 70% drop.
Dan talking about AOT's final season cracked me up.
You should watch Chainsaw Man. It’s excellent.
Can’t wait for that breakdown on how the Oscars work!
It was awesome!
I’m from Maine and lived there for 31 years, and you blew MY mind!
I was hoping you did a chart on movies that have drug/alcohol reference in the title (Pineapple Express, Dope, etc)
What a wonderful memory!
that AOT final season part splitting has been hilarious to see memes on
I feel so bad for being rude and leaving a nasty comment about how you pronounced Emily Bronte last week! I'm very sorry. You do great work Dan. Keep being awesome.
@danmurrell Patrick Brunty changed the family’s name to Brontë (the way we almost all pronounce it) to make it less Irish sounding. So you were right :) - Victorianist
Wakanda Forever was absolute trash
I don't know if you're including TV shows, but I really loved WandaVision--to the point where it might be my favorite MCU story. (And Loki was a close runner-up.) Based on those alone, I was REALLY looking forward to Multiverse of Madness. I ultimately was very disappointed in that--it just felt so inconsistent in the characterizations of both Wanda AND the multiverse they'd established thus far. And the way they just turned Wanda into a agency-free plot device felt outright lazy.
@@yippykiyay89 so edgy🙄
So glad that Dan is getting into AoT, can't wait for your review
I think the one factor that I was hoping Dan mention that in California had one of the craziest winter storms even snowing in Los Angeles California. I truly feel the really horrible weather in southern california played a factor into why ant man box office drop was so severe. I noticed nobody factored that in but when east coast had artic blast, it was mentioned why box office suffered.
I was in LA last weekend - it was raining pretty hard on Friday night, but cleared up by Saturday. The snow was at high elevations. Not sure how much of a factor that was.
@@DanMurrellMovies it was pretty consisted where I live. It was moment of a couple hours when it looked over but then started back. I know you lived in LA so you know we aren't big on going out when the weather is bad. I just believe the rainy weather was a factor.
Congratulations! I hope you have many more happy years together.
Me scanning the comments for anyone who loves near that theater in Maine --- loved this unexpected hometown Dan Rant
Then we'll have a New(ish) DCU and MCU that's hopefully better for us all at the same time
Holy crap, Attack on Titan!! Thank you, Dan!!
Very happy to see the market share chart return 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Back in college (in 2001!), I had to watch the 1988 Chocolat to do a report for my History of French Black Africa and the Caribbean class. That movie was AWFUL!!!
69%? Nice.
Nice
Nice? For Who? Certainly Not For Disney.
Guardians film and Loki series might bring it back on track but The Marvels film followed by Echo and iron heart series definitely gonna hit the wall again
I love that the comments are so focused on the Waldo threatre
Dan just casually dropping that he's watching Attack on Titan. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it!
Okay, dog gone I get... But cocaine bear is about a bear on cocaine? I think I need that one more time.
34:00 Wait, wouldn't Jesus Revolution been in 3rd place in the worldwide chart? It's domestic box-office is above The Way of Water and The Last Wish.
Chocolat (1988) will be playing in Brookline, MA next week on 3/7 at the Coolidge Corner Theatre
Oh crap, I totally forgot Demon Slayer was this friday! A friend bought some tickets like a month ago, I gave him the money then I forgot about the whole thing lol. Thanks for the reminder.
Love the marketshare section. Can you do something similar for streaming. Interested in seeing how Netflix is doing in the streaming wars
