How amazing that Lee didn't hear Stan live that much. As someone who grew up in Australia, and could only know these great players via their recordings, it dumbfounds me that even peers working within the same scene relied on the same medium in order to study and enjoy each others' music. Btw I played a couple of concerts with Lee in Melbourne in the early 90s. He would often travelled around the world and played with "local' rhythm sections. It was an honour to play with him, and we had a great time.
I agree, I know Jake Feinberg is working on Stan Getz, but keeps steering Lee Konitz to a place where he really doesn’t want to be. At least it is good to hear Lee speak.
Amen. We have his music and that's the "gift", his personal life was his and those he interacted with, no-one else's business. As with us ALL. Digging dirt aka obsessive necrophilia is an ugly trait.
Lee is still a gentleman throughout here, though. Sometimes interviewers get their jollies trying to get a speaker to say something unfair or unjust or incautious. Indeed, there was much overt (and sometimes preening) grandstanding on Stan's part. Jazz would be boring is they all didn't display such different musical personalities and styles.

Getz and Konitz recorded twice as part of the Metronome All-Stars. Did you ask Konitz about this? If not, why not?
Let your life proceed by its own design
