Yea, long long ago I worked as a FedEx driver in Washington DC and it was one of the worst jobs I ever had. They fired so many people and "combined" routes. You'd end up working twice as hard for 10+ hours a day downtown carrying heavy packages through the backdoors of old buildings that would NOT let you come through the front door which could have saved you time and back aches. After about 7 months I quit just before the holidays.

Many manufacturing plants use 3rd Party temp workers, lower pay and not guaranteed work. After enough time they may hire the employee directly, that way they know they have quality workers who will show up. So this isn’t unheard of.

However, none of us were under any illusion of who we worked for. Our checks, training, and even disciplinary actions were handled by said corporate contractor, not the multinational company that used our services. How does this Amazon situation differ?
Why would people shop with Amazon in 2024. They’ve long been absolutely horrible to its employees. Working in their warehouses is so bad it might as well be torture. Friends that worked at the local one told me horror stories. I haven’t seen it first hand but it seems really harsh. Like hourly quotas for collecting packages from the warehouse that they have to run on concrete that people get constantly injured. While there are restrooms because of the quotas that basically force you to work through your breaks. A few people said it’s known for the runners to keep going until they urinate in their pants for fear of losing their job. There’s no rule you can’t use the bathroom or eat lunch. It just that if you do you’ll miss quota and get your pay docked or get fired if it happens enough. They have ways of claiming innocence but they know how it’s set up of course. I feel if you buy there you support sweatshops in other countries and worker abuse here. Will you find a written policy about it? It’s the workers choice to do it. They should all use that choice to quit before Christmas. Don’t even picket just find a decent job and don’t go back. Enough of that and they’ll change the policies.

It will obviously take more time to "train" the cars to handle the streets of NYC and San Fran, but one thing is for sure---there's no going back now. I have a six year old niece: I guarantee she will never drive. And she will find it funny that people once had to drive their own cars.

Way back in the last depression I was delivering newspapers. We were contracted so not employees. This is in Mass. by the way. A ruling came down that we were employees because we only contracted with the newspaper. The contract was a separation without meaning to avoid any meaningful oversight.

Unfortunately it is true ! When a company contracts from another company you work for that contract company so the government is false for saying that
Way back in the last depression I was delivering newspapers. We were contracted so not employees. This is in Mass. by the way. A ruling came down that we were employees because we only contracted with the newspaper. The contract was a separation without meaning to avoid any meaningful oversight.
