I unironically loved “Marmalade Boy” when I came across the manga in 2000 or so, but it wasn’t until I was watching the anime that my mom, whom I never knew was paying attention, called out the step-siblings who wanted to date each other, all the parents who all swapped spouses with each other after meeting on a vacation, & the Student-Teacher relationship plot and I saw how incredibly messy it all was.
Soundtrack slaps tho, I’ll die on that hill.

So true, characters may have been messy and well you could argue it made it more entertaining, music is so enchantingly beautiful, it’s definitely the best thing to come out of the Anime

@@Wolfiewolf1234 pretty much miki mom and yuu dad, as well as miki dad and yuus mom dated in high school. due to complications and a miscarriage each set of couples broke up. years after that miki's parents got together... then yuus parents got together. only for again another yet of years and they run into each other on vacation and feelings rekindled and mutually decided to divorce and re-marry... and since there no hard feelings live together so each kid has both parents under the same roof rather then traveling between each set of parents.

I’ve been wanting to write a series about this set up from the parents’ perspective for years! It’s loaded with material that can make for great writing. Like having the parents acknowledge how they acted like dumb teenagers who rushed into things while forgetting the actual teenagers caught in the middle. Or questioning how their relationship can survive when the obligations to their kids and their happiness are brought up.

Fruits Basket 2019 was close, with 60+ episodes and a movie. With a 3rd season coming, Kimi ni Todoke might match that. But, I agree. I'd love to see another behemoth shojo on the scale of Marmalade Boy. Natsume's Book of Friends is 70+, but it took 9 years and 6 different seasons to get us that far (also not a romance).

I couldn't handle living through this kind of chaotic drama trauma - I'm convinced that the creator of Marmalade Boy likes to inflict unnecessary levels of emotional torture on the characters as much as on the readers. Some women live to see chaotic drama trauma. Every K-drama that's set in the modern era could have been solved with a phone call to clear up misunderstandings in the first episode but that doesn't get good ratings for some reason. My mom gets devastated every time I tell her I don't care about her gossip about people I'll never even meet.
Well considering that the author mentioned that she was originally going to make Miki and Yuu turn out to be half siblings and have the ending be sad. Only for her editor say ‘no’.

The whole step sibling thing isnt as bad considering they are teens now, sort of transitioning now toa adult lives, and Yuu liked her before knowing they would live together. It would have been super weird if they had grown up together for sure. Now that student-teacher relationship.... yeah even as a kid, I knew that was so weird!! And they married! Like that teacher took advantage of her home life fr!!

It’s kinda wild listening to older dubs and everyone sounds like they’re much older whereas dubs now have so many high pitched voices. I love my dubs but somehow these classic dubs really hit a soft spot for me lol

Marmalade Boy was my first manga and it awakened my love for anime as a whole; I owe so much to the series. That being said, god, it's a mess! I kind of love it for that, though. When I saw this pop up in my recommended, I was ecstatic! I never see anyone talking about this show and I'm super excited to watch this video (just finished the intro and I can't wait to hear what you have to say about this chaotic ride of a show/book).

Marmalade Boy was my first manga and anime. I used to hate the show as an older teen when I ate it up from 10-14. Now, even though the more I watch your videos the more I agree with your points of the messier and problematic side of things (I hated on Miki so much when I was younger but poor girl did not deserve that sometimes) it holds such an amazing place in my heart and now I feel I need to rewatch it again after watching this. This is a great video! 💕

8:10 he didn't do it just out of embarrassment and to apologize. In Japan there's an old custom to cut your hair when you've been rejected after a love confession, though it's usually girls who do it. Apparently it comes from samurai and it's a symbol of a major life change or a new chapter.
So it's actually him accepting that he fd up and stating he was the one being rejected.
(Haven't finished the video so idk if this small nuance will come up later)

I just found your channel today and man, it must've been a sign from above or something because I've been having a really hard time as of late and I felt like I hadn't laughed this hard in a long time.
I really enjoy video essays/commentaries and sometimes I vibe with some guilty pleasure (kinda meh/trashy) shows and anime (as long as it isn't *real* bad, obviously). I guess it's a "the world is crazy enough, at least I can laugh at this" sort of thing and just enjoy the insanity. Kinda like how I can deal with Twilight or like 90 Day Fiancé bc sometimes, I think it's just necessary to enjoy some silliness in life bc life is hard enough as it is.
My great grandfather always believed that having a sense of humor can get you through a lot in life and he went through the world wars and the Great Depression. Obviously, that is not something anyone should go through, but I think of his words during rough times cause well, we all need something to keep us going and find some light in life "otherwise we'd all go crazy" he used to say, according to my mother.
Hope his words helps someone here as well. I never met him, but he was a great man from what I've been told and his wisdom has stuck with my family throughout many hard years.
I guess it's my silly way to say thanks for making this video, making it real fun watch, and for making me feel a little better. I plan to watch as many of your videos as I can for the foreseeable future.
