Growing up in Coleraine I remember taking the train to Portrush and Londonderry in the early 200's on these trains, wish I could've got to experience them now at my age because they are so unbelievably nostalgic to me
Fascinating video. Proper old thumpers - I remember them when i moved here in 2002 still going to Larne. There is something ever so slightly unsettling about two trains leaving a station side by side going in the same direction 🤣 that track in the foreground at 3:59 looks like it was put down in a rush!
The car driver did not try to beat the gates. If you look closely, you can see that the car had actually stopped, and the signalman had stopped lowering the barriers to let the car go through.
The train giving up the token at 0.44 is from Derry, token is for Castlerock to Coleraine. The next train is from Portrush and retains the token for the Portrush branch as the branch is being worked on the 'one engine in steam' principle, and it is returning to Portrush straight away.

Absolutely fantastic, it's a pity that this sight will never be recreated again.

Brilliant footage.
fantastic stuff
That token handover is quite something to witness, even though it was probably quite routine at the time.
I remember the old red livery on the 80 class trains! That wasn’t yesterday
Great British build
There's always one at 3:02 to beat the gates.

Fab video love the fact two trains departed at the same time going different directions ❤️❤️❤️Was this filmed in the Early Noughties ?
Filmed in Mid 1990s
I remember these so well! They used to run past the back of our house. Any reason for the diamond on the back or was it just because?
hmcdsinger Just the pattern on the door covers. Was on all of the 80 class and Gatwick stock carriages.
Cool
Is that the ex portrush giving up the token?? If so,….why didn’t the other train pick up the token from the signalman on the way to portrush?

Why does the video have no audio
3:34 who will win? 87 or 82?
