Invermoray
Invermoray was a layout used by the Moray Model Railway Group in the 1990s. The signals are fully functional, and are interlocked with the relevant points. In the station area, the signals are set by the signalman, and are cancelled by the passage of the train. Outwith the station area, the signals are fully automatic. The two level crossings are activated by approaching trains, and open immediately after a train has completely passed, unless a second train is approaching.

82 travelling from Portrush to beyond the old Portstewart station, without stopping at Dhu Varren, much to the concern of waiting passengers.

In mid 1990s, 86 arrives from Derry for Belfast into Platform 2. 87 arrives from Belfast for Derry into Platform 1. 82 comes in off the Portrush branch into Platform 2 behind 86. After station work is complete, 82 & 87 depart simultaneously for Portrush and Derry respectively. 86 will have departed unseen for Belfast.
80 Class at speed at Killagan

In August 1995, at Killagan, 95 heads a 9 car special to Derry. With headlight blazing, horn blaring and a clean exhaust, the train makes an inspiring sight as it blasts over the level crossing, and through the closed station.
Want on to be 1 of 2 saved from scrap
Fascinating video. Proper old thumpers - I remember them when i moved here in 2002 still going to Larne. There is something ever so slightly unsettling about two trains leaving a station side by side going in the same direction 🤣 that track in the foreground at 3:59 looks like it was put down in a rush!
Why does the video have no audio
Fab video love the fact two trains departed at the same time going different directions ❤️❤️❤️Was this filmed in the Early Noughties ?
Filmed in Mid 1990s
Growing up in Coleraine I remember taking the train to Portrush and Londonderry in the early 200's on these trains, wish I could've got to experience them now at my age because they are so unbelievably nostalgic to me
Sadly wooden coaches you see will never run mainline again
Is that the ex portrush giving up the token?? If so,….why didn’t the other train pick up the token from the signalman on the way to portrush?
The train giving up the token at 0.44 is from Derry, token is for Castlerock to Coleraine. The next train is from Portrush and retains the token for the Portrush branch as the branch is being worked on the 'one engine in steam' principle, and it is returning to Portrush straight away.
Awesome video. If I remember correctly the maximum permitted number of cars for the related Class 205 / 207 Thumpers is 15 although 12 is the most I've ever seen. Possibly the same for the Class 80.
3:34 who will win? 87 or 82?
Ahhhhh good old 171 doing the Portrush flyer probs to this day if covid wasn't around it would be 131, 85 or No: 4 doing it
what was behind?
What was behind what?
It was 82
How about middle?
What level crossing
Killagan level crossing, about half way between Ballymena and Ballymoney.
That token handover is quite something to witness, even though it was probably quite routine at the time.
Brilliant footage.
Fantastic video and thanks for the explanation of why the train didn't stop at Dhu Varren (interesting name). I had to revise what `Up' and `Down' train meant lol (`Up' direction is towards Belfast for those not familiar with this area). btw I'm always impressed by the lack of smoke from these very old design EE engines when in good condition. I hate that these lovely old units are no more.
Great memories of a great train!
I remember the old red livery on the 80 class trains! That wasn’t yesterday
truly inspiring I need to get my life sorted out after seeing that
LOL
Also matey, why did it pass dhu varren?
When down trains were running late and arrived at Dhu Varren at or after the booked time for the return journey, passengers already waiting for the up train would board the down train and travel down to Portrush. The returning up train would then not stop at Dhu Varren in order to make up some time.I witnessed this on a number of occasions. Unfortunately, as happened to me once, living in sight of Dhu Varren station and waiting for the down train to pass before walking to the station, meant not catching the train as it did not stop. Hence the people on the platform in the video clip.
The down working was probably running late, so to save time, passengers waiting for the up working would have boarded the train on the way down to Portrush, thus not having to stop on the return trip. Not very helpful if you live close to the station and only walk there after the down train has passed.
What year is this? I'm from Portrush and seen these trains for most of my life. I remember being able to open the doors during traveling and hanging out the side. The news trains where just no fun at all!
The date would be October 1996.
Dhu Varren cheers mate I was 5 years young. Good times.
There's always one at 3:02 to beat the gates.
The car driver did not try to beat the gates. If you look closely, you can see that the car had actually stopped, and the signalman had stopped lowering the barriers to let the car go through.
The bridge at 50:20 I recognise so that's a later re-incarnation.
So much to see. The Scotwork North-East coach at 38:34 and I know now where I've seen the curve at 40:15 before.
I never saw it as it's shown in the first 3 1/2 minutes with Lochgorm and the curve beyond. No sign of a HoG anywhere.
at 6:35, is that what's known as a tender behind? Nice sequence.
Interesting how in all the clips, the trailer has the diamond except the last
I think you mean the other way round. The red diamond only appears in the last clip. All the other clips do not have the gangway cover fitted. If you look at 'Coleraine evening rush' video, the same unit appears, again with the gangway cover fitted. All these clips were taken on the same day at different locations and times, so at some point in the middle of the day, for some reason, the gangway cover was fitted.
The old old 80 class
I remember these so well! They used to run past the back of our house. Any reason for the diamond on the back or was it just because?
hmcdsinger Just the pattern on the door covers. Was on all of the 80 class and Gatwick stock carriages.
Superb video!
fantastic stuff
Wonder why he had tail lights on both ends?
It could be because the Portrush branch is operated on the 'one engine in steam' principle. Notice also that at 0.19 in the clip, the departing unit passes the home signal pulled off for an arriving train.
Most trains on the Portrush branch, at that time, were operated by the same unit for a whole week, and then changed. There were about seventeen return workings each day, most of which were worked by the same unit.
Fantastic
Fantastic video
Great British build
Fantastic
Cool
Absolutely fantastic, it's a pity that this sight will never be recreated again.
Superb thanks for sharing
Nice video!
