    I'm testing out the Ananda's now - and here's my short-term opinion..
    SOUND:
From a sound perspective, these are about as perfect (for my tastes) as I've heard to date. The lows are rumbly and tight (particularly in the sub-bass)
The mids are clear and detailed - naturally forward without being forceful
The highs are crispy clear, literally walking the line without crossing it (in terms of sibilance)
Compared to Audeze lcd-2c's - these are far more satisfying. I really gave the lcd2c's a fair chance but my impression was very unpleasant. I feel the mids ruin the sound. They're bizarrely nasal and muffled. I feel that the mids go as far as to ruin the highs - which are borderline flat but are overpowered by the mids.
The Ananda's address and far outperform the lcd2c's on all of the above - I immediately felt immersed and satisfied the moment I took the lcd2c's off and put the Ananda's on.
    COMFORT:
You NEED to give these a good 48 hour break-in.
When I first put the Ananda's on, the pressure at the base of the skull (on the sternomastoid muscle) and subsequent nerves was very unpleasant. They almost felt like they were cutting off circulation
However - a day later, I have gotten more used to it and they are becoming more comfortable and tolerable
    CONCLUSION:
I'm going to play around with these for a week longer and see how I feel then - for now that pressure point is tolerable but not ideal.
However, the overall sound performance, imaging, detail, frequencies are a HUGE yes - these are the best sounding headphones I've put on my head period.

    • @Jordonater
      @Jordonater 3 роки тому +1

Would you be able to say how detail is compared to the senheiser hd598? I got a zmf Aeolus and was immediately disappointed because of the closed in and lack of clarity in treble and midrange(compared to 598) just as you were with the Audeze.

    • @bbeeezzy

I bought the Ananda and the LCD2C at the same time too! And I had the exact same reaction. Easy choice, no contest: the Ananda sounds like life, while the LCD2C just sound muffled and strange. So many people who's opinions I respect love them (like Josh) and I just don't get it. It's one of the most baffling peculiarities I've run across in this hobby.
The Ananda do hit me in a kinda weird spot to: right behind the back of my jaw. They're just so huge! But so is the sound. The fit isn't actually uncomfortable at all, just a little unusual.

@@soraflame66 Well ill admit I bought the Ananda's since the comment i wrote and they were just too fatiguing to me. I liked the sound until after an hour or so then it just hurt my ears but i can see why many like them so much. I returned for a refund and the search still continues. Currently using HD58X and the treble is at the level where if it was any higher then it would fatigue however it doesn't thankfully but i just want something "better".

Demo'd the Ananda along with a whole bunch of other headphones, and this is what I liked the most for a reasonable price. I can say I'm very happy with my purchase, especially since most of what I listen to and work with is orchestral music. I would definitely suggest going to a shop to buy it though, so you can check the unit you're buying for QC issues. Things too look out for that I've seen are: misaligned drivers, slightly indented grilles, and scratches on the driver.

Had the Ananda for about one year. I mainly listen to various forms of metal and some rock music. Before these I used the HD-650 for like 6 years. Demoed the Ananda alongside Focal Clear and Meze Empyrean. Strictly looking at the sound I liked the Empy the best, but taking price into account the Ananda was the clear winner. In my mind it's the perfect sound within reasonable budget for the kind of music I like the most. Listening to death/black metal at high volume is really immersive, grandiose and gives a sense of space and "live feeling" without being fatiguing. And it's so comfortable, you forget you have headphones on.

Hey, I got a question: I have an ancient Stax SR-5 (with the necessary SRD-6/SB adapter) and Anandas. The SRD-6/SB needs to be connected to the speaker outputs of a "real" amp which I didn't have because I don't have speakers, just headphones.
So I bought an Audiolab M-ONE (2x40 W) which is an integrated amp (DAC + AMP) with a headphone output as well (of course). The Anandas sound great but I don't have a reference, neither did I ever listen to good headphones hooked up to a dedicated DAC/AMP.
TL;DR: Do I "need" a seperate, dedicated DAC/AMP (and not use the M-ONE for the Anandas)? Advice much appreciated!

I mean i come from a 6XX & i fckin love them sooo much for their kinda intimate vocals, would love to know how the Ananda deal with lot of vocals/voices songs, can he get intimate like the 6XX can ? I mean i don't think lot of headphones can actually reproduce the same awesome intimacy on vocals that the 6XX provide, but just wanted to know if the Ananda can maybe come close & give you that sweet intimacy "realistic" vocals like the 6XX ? Hope it make sense i'm french my english could probably be better lol

While I typically listen to instrumental music, I can attest that vocals are outstanding with the headphone. It's presentation for vocals are perfectly placed - not too forward or recessed. Think front-row-center. Combined with the Ananda's separation, the music perfectly frames the vocalist in a way that enhances the overall presentation. HTH. BTW, make sure you give it ample time for break-in (typically 100hrs+)!

With my recently rekindled love of audio equipment, I've been happy to stumble upon your channel. You've come a long way in your vids and have quickly become my favorite reviewer. You've helped me decide to buy a Sundara in previous videos and now, you've piqued my interest enough to have purchased an Ananda through you link. The Ananda is now $699 and it's close enough to see if I'm missing much. Also, I foolishly never tried the stock cable with the Sundara and jumped straight to using a balanced cable purchased for it. Long story short, cables matter, probably to a larger degree for headphones versus speaker cables. All this time I was really puzzled about statements of the Sundara having "punch" until I tried the stock cable. Doh! Finally, would it be possible to mention what equipment you use in the description for future reviews? Much thanks for all you do!

Do i think is it better than Sundara although its double the price....Hell to the yes!. Ananda sound is very wide, soundstage is right in the middle, trebles are perfect and non fatigue. I can listen to music all day with comfort. Surprisingly lightweight, built quality can be better for the price. My favorite music with Ananda is playing Billy Ocean Caribbean Queen and Alan Walker Alone. The headphone plays well with pretty much every genre types of music. The instrument separation is exquisite, reaching further than my HD660s. I have mated the Ananda with Topping A30 pro and D30 Pro Stack and it kicks @$$. Bass is good, but some songs needed some more bass, but with equalizer APO, its touch perfect. I suggesting a planar magnetic openback headphone if you love psychedelics rock. This type of headphone will make you flying without taking any substance. Their openness, instrument separation, detail, staging, and clarity is excellent for this genre. Lately I listen to The Dark Side of the Moon using a Hifiman Deva.. Heart beat from "Speak to Me" is truly clear and the bass was not bloated and distort like other average wireless headphone. Screaming from "Breathe (In the Air)" and the laughing man from ''On the Run" is very haunting.. sounds creepy even. Ringing cash register and a jingle of coins from "Money", ringing bell and clock from "Time" is simply as spectacular as an ASMR type sound could be.

By man, don't know if you looked this up since then but the Ananda's are very efficient, way more efficient than the less expensive Sundaras and 400/4XX Hifimans. They're only an impedance of 25 ohms and a sensitivity of 103db so in terms of power, they do not require much at all, pretty much any amp or dad/amp will do. I don't own them but I do own the 400i and their low sensitivity of 94db had me buy a desktop amp because my portable amp I was using for them didn't get loud enough for certain songs and genres. All the reviews I've read about the Anandas mention they don't need a dad or amp because they can be easily powered by your phone or computer, but a dad/amp never hurts.

I guess I am late to the party, but at 599 these are definitely worth it. I would not have paid 999, or even 850. I had the Sundara's as a reference pair for about 6 months, then sold and settled on these, the sandpaper comparison is spot on.. I listen to music 6-8 hours a day, so I need something that is non-fatiguing and smooth in the treble, and I prefer an open and large sound. These deliver They are far less amp-dependent, something that should be considered when choosing here, a Fiio e10 will run these fine, in fact, it is a great pairing because it seems to add a bit more weight in the upper midrange than say a neutral amp like a JDS labs element.
Also, missing from the review is that these things are excellent for ClasssicJazz and reggae albums, especially live sessions. . They image old recordings like nobody's business. Anything recorded pre-1980 will sound great on these. Anything mastered for cheap gear will get exposed, and quickly removed from your like list. I will say they are a tad more forgiving than other magnetic planners, and at this price, they are amazing for the things mentioned above. I would describe them as less a speaker-like experience and more a, Hey, I am in the studio listening to a live session experience. Footprints by Wayne Shorter is a great exmaple. The double Bass is well articulated and extends all the way down to a puff of air underneath. They can separate the Sax and trumpet extremely well, even though the artists are standing a few feet apart. You can distinctly make feel the sax player in the duet being slightly behind and to the left of the trumpet player. On a 40+-year-old live session, it is an impressive experience at this price point. For comparison, These are jazz masters in the same way the HD 598's are, just with more detail, extension, and energy, and clarity and size of the images are larger, just without the classic Sennheiser timbre in the mids. if I could combine that with the Ananda, it would be the perfect headphone for me. I keep both around as my mainstays for live recordings.

Unfortunately I can compare it only to DT990 pro, so I didn't expect to be such a big jump in sound quality. I love the smooth presentation of the Ananda, the very detailed highs which are never offensive, forward mids and the imersive stage which is wide enough but very tall. Bass is fast but little bit light, so I like +3db low shelf under 70hz. Impact is also a little bit light with low-medium volumes, but gets much better with higher volume. @@Jordonater I'm a huge 600 fan, and though they are pretty different I don't find the Ananda lacking anywhere. It's overall flatter, but no less fun and satisfying imo. The 600 has slightly pushed mids (amazing for vocals); the Ananda mids are essentially flat to my ear, but not recessed (still very nice for vocals). 600 is a bit bass light & rolled off lows; Ananda is nearly flat bass, with nice weight & body. 600 has great treble, though ever so slightly warm (slightly below neutral?), with great detail level and cleanliness; Ananda is noticeably brighter, with maybe more highs than neutral? Not sure. But it's definitely not bright in a sibilant way. This brightness mostly results in extra details, really. Like, more noticeable "S" and "T" sounds, more zing in cymbals, more chime with acoustic steels strings, and even wet mouth sounds with vocals during quiet parts (I know, kinda gross, but whatever). Forum folks say the Ananda's extra brightness is in the 8kHz-ish range, so pretty up there. I don't find it distracting but I admit that I do EQ the Ananda's high end down sometimes with certain recordings, even after burn-in, which I'm pretty sure reduced this brightness a bit (worth mentioning that out of the box this extra brightness was enough that I did find it a bit distracting at times).

And I know I'm not alone. You just have to be ok with that rolled off low end. But proper amplification does a lot to improve their bass response. Which reminds me: in case you don't already know, the 600 really do need some real power, i.e. a proper headphone amplifier. I also Agree the soundstage is better on the Hd800 by really far and very few headphones comes close like the Abyss Fi or the 009. People that says that any hifiman is close to the Hd800 soundstage I really recommend read less forums and to pick a musical instrument and practice for few years. Maybe by that the ear star hearing properly sound properties. Nothing wrong if people dislike the wide sound of the hd800 but a hifiman as wide and real as those? Sennheiser is on a Different engineering level revel

@@Thevikingcam That's nuts dude. What a steal for this phone then. Have you tried out the HD800s or just the original 800? It's insane to me to see that they are that close.

So which would sound better for movie soundtracks and epic trailer type music? The Sundara or the Ananda?

Please take a look at the Ananda Stealth, it's almost the same price as the Edition XS. Hard to chose between them with the limited reviews of the Stealth.

    Tops Josh,
Yep have the ananda, satisfied as best can be with the can experience.
They can seem polite but do manage to lay the dynamic range out, particularly mid range.
I still can't get used to the stage and overall timbre if set beside floor standers. The latter just have it spatially and holographically with respect to performers and audience.
That said the sound musicality is there, the bass is well layered but not sledgehammer thick. The treble too presents clean but not silky slippery.
As for the build, yep the finish seems basic but durability is there if you have an understanding of material properties, the material aesthetic is just peculiar.
Ergonomically they do fail with respect to skull size, I fit a packer under the head band to alter the stage properties. It's not a deal breaker for me.
Gear: Icon audio hp8, latest. Rega Isis transport, chord cadenza interconnects.
I reckon the Atlas marvos would perform better but I feed that pair to the amp.

Really don't know whether to go for these or the LCD 2C
