Years ago I purchased an ex-Maui VW LT35 2.4turbo diesel 5sp manual for $35K, running at 7 litres/100kms, a dream to drive. Had it for about 5 years and lost $3K depreciation. A great driving experience and great for the outback where good accomodation was scarce.
Very odd name and no Jayco logos on the vans. Also model Style doesn’t show up on Jayco’s list of campervans. They only show the JV cheaper model in Fiat and Mercedes or the Optimum. None with a rear like that with huge boot and 9kg bottle. Very confused. Have had two Jayco motorhomes and now a Journey Outback off-road van and wanting to now go to a campervan. This video confuses me. Is there a different branch of Jayco in Victoria?
We were lucky enough to grab one of the first generation Campervan. All Terrain. After 24000km I can attest to it being a great camper. The ability to go just that little bit further than many other vans sold us. I like many of the upgrades on this second gen model but the high level fixed bed would be a deal breaker. Our van has twin bed/single bed flexibility. We have it permanently set up with the twin beds. Practical, easy to make and importantly you have walking access right through the van. The new setup would feel quite claustrophobic. It is big bit of gear but shrinks the more you drive it and is very cat-like. We have averaged about 10.5 l/km overall including outback tracks. Cheers.
Wow. A lot of negative comments here. I thought it was a fair review. My wife and I recently hired the Jayco Escape (Renault Master campervan, 2 berth (to buy $99k)) for a 2-week roadtrip with 1 week stationery, totally off-grid and it was functional but lacking storage for us. The slightly larger Crafter would suit us better I think. If you compare what you get in this van, with something like a Trakka or Frontline campervan it is good value. For couples, particularly retirees with a bit of disposable income this would be great. Other posters have commented about the shower and toilet; some people have issues for which this is great. If you manage your showering you can free camp a couple of nights here and there and save $25-$50/night on showground/van park accomodation...The biggest drawback is servicing costs; Volkswagens, Merc etc are notoriously expensive compared to asian manufacturers.
Great review. If the Crafter is anything like the Multivan (which I have owned) it would be an awesome vehicle. Really like the looks of it inside and out.
Do you think the style would be ok on gravel roads now and then?. I know the ride height is not great but surely with the 4 motion it could do most dirt stuff.
Not a bad camper van for the money. Compared to a Trakka 2wd smaller van this is good value for the price. People who buy these vans want to tour Australia, not go overseas. So yes if I had the cash I would buy one.
Imagine getting 8% compounding on $180k. The interest alone would see you on an European vacation every year. Plus you avoid insurance, rego on commercial vehicle, depreciation and servicing to keep warranty active. All up, you’re in 25k a year to sleep like a homeless 😂
Try and buy a 2nd hand one for a lot less than a new one. You can’t. There’s a good chance you would get back most if not all your initial outlay if it’s been looked after.
$172k for the very similar Jayco All Terrain (all wheel drive) Mercedes sprinter. Which seems a bit nicer, might have a bit more ground clearance but no rear diff lock? Good to see Australia getting a bit more choice though in 4x4 motorhomes in this price range
It's fitted out well....maybe, too well. As nice as it is to have an internal shower and toilet, it looks to make the internal space a bit too squishy for me.
AWD is nice to have on some campsites especially if rains overnite. Capable of towing decent boat with AWD giving more launching options. For loop I'd tow cargo trailer to carry extra supplies and toys with small boat on top.
Have you driven anywhere outside of a city lately? Or driven past a caravan park? Or gone out on a weekend? There's a lot of people who have caravans and 4x4s or campervans that cost more than this thing...
Great camper though the length is the killer. I hired a van a little shorter than this in Tassie and it was very hard to find places to park. Mind you - I am used to parking a Merc A Class
'I'll spend the night in it'. All we saw was you laying in bed saying 'wasn't a bad nights sleep'.. ha ha.. Funny. No sitting outside showing off the exterior, no cooking, no lighting.. just 'yeah, it wasn't bad'... still laughing...
That great big box of a shower takes up an awful lot of space and toilet spoils the whole van. These campers never hold enough water to have showers off grid...better do without, and shower at paid sites. You can have an under-seat toilet arrangement, which is much more sensible.
The problem with VW in AUS is that they charge INSANE prices for their parts. I was quoted $650 for the return fuel rail above the injectors. That's a $50 part. It's literally 30cm of rubber and plastic. Don't get a VW in Australia. I've been there, once bitten, twice shy. I would go any other van now. I've had 2 Crafters.
You lost me at the draw fridge, they are hopeless, why would they make the draw without sides on it to be able to stack your food and not have everything fall out the sides every time you open it!
This is not new - it is the 2nd Gen of this model - and I am not sure what sort of research this reviewer did but let me tell you - on the build side I wouldn’t be so cheerful - the quality of the 1st Gen was not good and talking about the ownership at the end a 5 yr warranty ain’t great if 15 mths into owning one you never had fully functioning product. Yep the Crafter side of things is pretty good the whole package I wouldn’t trust too much just yet because the Camper build side would have to have improved a hell of a lot from the last model to be worth the money and at that still reasonable price point I can’t really see that as the price difference would have been mainly eaten up by some upspec’d components not by more time or care spent on the build.
The price is nuts! How about I buy a 2024 LDV T60 for 40k and a Jayco trailer camper for 60k. For 100k I am having more value for money. I am not even kidding.

A good-looking van inside and out. With great features included. Please do more camper van reviews.
When we going to get you back in a Trakka Matt :D
appreciated your comprehensive review and comments, well done.
Thank you! 🙏

You are welcome. Thought your review was very good. We plan to have many more adventures in our VW Campervan. Cheers.
@geoffsshed8433, I agree with all of the above !
great detailed review its great to see your doing campervans most car reviewers only do cars can you also do a comparison between a motorhome

There's no doubt about The Right Car. If it's got 4 wheels, it will get reviewed. 😊

Nice looking vans with good features.
Yes more camper videos
Nice vehicle, the only thing that lets it down greatly is the fitout
What would make it better?
Man. Those who are digital nomad this is the perfect car for you. Save more money than a house.
Thanks, but not a word on the technogy (?) Cooling, controls, metres, etc. Or a walk around the outside... Maybe it's in part 2..
$160,000 would buy a lot of resort holidays and overseas trips. It's a bit too compact inside. You look like you had a bad night.
It a a con.
Jaycar cashed in on this contract with vw

I almost got bogged 1m from the road in a fwd car after night rain.😅

I hope the 1% of Australian's that can afford this, get to see this.

Caravans and camper vans are way over priced and it’s getting ridiculous.

How bout some Japanese import camper van review !!! Big price difference...
Ha! I’d love to. I know a guy who imports them, so it could be a fun one.
I must of missed where the price is mentioned?
150k
34 seconds in, you might have seen it and gone into shock.
Those rear doors open 270 degrees?
Interesting Camper. Wish Jayco would add it to the US market on the VW Chassis. They use Ram Promaster and MB Sprinter Chassis.

Not much else in Australia AWD so it's hard to beat
Agree!!
hmm cant they have one specced out with a 6 pot diesel and higher towing rating?
With enough money, anything is possible.

Thinking about buying one but not sure its worth another 80k over my rm19 jayco campervan
What's a trumble drawer?
Trundle drawer. It locks in place but can slide out if you use triggers either side of the sliders.
@therightcar never heard of it, it probably has a different name
Nah. That’s what it’s called.
@therightcar I called the Jayco dealership, the guy said its called "under bed storage". He never heard of "trundle"
more campervans pls
Who are the mainstream RV manufacturers you mention please?
Jayco, Trakka, Avida
Less than 80k is ok any more a con

Probably easier for grabbing a beer or chilled wine bottle from outside with a drawer and no sides.
Tin of beer ???? Ok wrap it up boys.
I love a beer.
It is looooooooooooong............ 🙂
Nice but reliablity and availability of parts
Jayco maybe not

$160K is a bit much.
You have already mentioned the price, no need for me to repeat it.
I'm sure it took you longer to reply than it took to hear it, sometimes we can go a day without complaining, well most of us can..

157k, bro.
No info on if there was solar and battery capacity etc , not a thorough review
Pffft. If you want to know that level of detail, you’ll find a spec sheet at the VW site.
There is solar and a battery.
Even if money is not a problem? Engine reliability is number 1. 2nd, can any ordinary mechanic fix it?
It's a turbo-diesel engine. Mechanics should be able to fix it. But parts availability might be a bigger concern, say if you're in outback NT or WA...

For a $160 000 one would expect a comfortable bed, mate 🤪. Honestly it’s way too over priced for what you get.
Save yourself 140k, buy a 2012 X trail and put a camper box in it
Yeah, and enjoy “the comfort” of that 😂😂😂
