Remember first finding this interview with less than 100 hits, was so proud to find this little gem that at that time reached only a few, those happy few
Let Olivier say it best... "At its most highfalutin expression of it, the actor is as important as the illuminator of the human heart, he is as important as the psychiatrist…. At the opposite end of that pole you have got to find in the actor a man who will not be too proud to scavenge the tiniest little bit of human circumstance in himself and others, observe it, use it, find it…. And perhaps in those little tinny things maybe the key to a whole characterization." What actors today think like this? None!
Well, the people who obviously misconstrued Olivier and Brando don't know what they are on about and shouldn't talk about things they do not know. They both are not from different generations but are from different countries. This also differs in each other's acting, Olivier studied in Central London (drama school) but organically created his characters whereas Brando studied in Stella Adler's Studio of Acting in America, thus following in the teachings of Russian method acting Practitioner Konstantin Stanislavski, which concludes their different variations of methods in creating each character. So, if you don't know what you're on about and don't respect one of the greatest actors that actually his name is now title of an award then, please, just leave.
"Not as an indian rubber planter..." Hahaha that lisp & rolling of the tongue!!! Just finished watching a Ken Branagh interview referring to these little expressions that made him playing Sir Lawrence so much fun. Now I know why.
Everyone who insults a man who was more famous as an actor in his time than most should really be quiet until they actually are famous or studied the culture. Olivier was incredible for his time and an actual artist compared to many actors today who resort to expressionless acting and call it natural. God, everyone watches a film and thinks they are a master until they get up on set OR get up on theater... Quite sad.
I want a good argument man... I'm waiting.... Still waiting.... OHHHH look.... the best you can do is comment on something that has nothing to do with the topic. Makes me sad... I was hoping for a real conversation.
Marie Baudino Indeed! Listen to BBC Radio 3. The word is used all the time, almost comically so to North American ears. You can listen to the Radio 3 on the internet.
Interesting spot. I suppose they were about a third of the way through their partnership at The National, so he still perhaps respected his opinions...
The Two Men who have done Vivien Leigh the most Damage!!! My support always with My Dear Vivien! The Best actrees and the most beautiful in history🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Jack FknTwist LOL Says the nobody the who never made one mark in history versus Olivier who was famous for his "Bad" acting. You clearly never saw Divorce of Lady X have you. Stick to accounting.
Olivier's acting is not only bad but is used in most acting schools as an example of how to ruin a scene. You should stick to your tree hugging career.
Sir Laurence Olivier is by far the greatest actor of all time. I absolutely enjoyed watching this interview and thanks for sharing it.
Matter of taste. Compared to Paul Scofield he is average! Michael Redgrave is also one of the Greats.
I used to think that, but I discovered (rediscovered) Charles Laughton. Even greater, more moving, and more natural.

"I was very fat & probably brainless." Hilarious. Love this interview. Thank you for posting!

My favorite.

Tom Hiddleston does

One of my Heroes.
Olivier talking to Tynan: Once British television was worth watching.
Lawrence Olivier; the best unhooknosed and anamerican Charlton Heston ever !
Very Fascinating man

"incredible for his time'.....there's damning false praise, if I ever heard it !
What is it? Name how it is false.... waiting... Oh I am just going to call you out right now and say you don't know shit. :)
ManweArcadio " Call you out ".......Ha ha ha. What are you, 12 ?
Yes I said that.... but I am still waiting.... You really don't know shit, do you... LOL

Masterful bit of power play by Larry with the ghastly Tynan at 7:40. Very funny if you know the history between the two.
Tis is incredible thank you !
Why did I guess correctly that Kenneth Tynan died of some smoking related illness (emphysema)? He died aged 53.
Who uses the word "indeed" today ?
I wish there was a way for me to speak like he did.
indeed.
Marie Baudino Indeed! Listen to BBC Radio 3. The word is used all the time, almost comically so to North American ears. You can listen to the Radio 3 on the internet.
+Marie Baudino
Who uses the word ?
Everyone who can speak English who isn't an idiot.
+Marie Baudino Just start using it.
It's true. Being English I still use it.
Really camp in this but so sexy. Great man.
Olivier is uncharacteristically animated in this interview. He almost seems to be trying to impress Tynan.

Spot on with the truth.
She was seriously mentally ill. I think she did Olivier a lot of damage.
What did Fogarty mean when she said, "You have a weakness here"
hah, o yes, you're right...sorry.
Olivier always great. Tynan hideous to watch and all that smoking....
You don't know what you're talking about
marlon brando...yuck
Olivier's version of Richard III was pathetic, over acted and indulgent.
I'd like to see you do better.
Will Barber - Taylor That would not be difficult.

LOL what's your proof? You seem like you have no evidence backing you except the phrase, "He is bad." Very cute.
