  • In this video we'll be installing an original Oliver brand hillside hitch onto my Oliver 66 tractor I bought this past summer. This hillside hitch is hydraulic and is used to move the drawbar from side to side, mainly for situations in which you're working on the side of a hill and need to move the drawbar to compensate.

A lot of guys make their own hillside hitch. They do come in handy at times. My 4 bottom IH 720 plow I use on the big tractor has the hillside hitch built in, which is also handy.

That’s pretty neat. Before my grandfather bought our Powershift 4020 in the mid 70s it was a potato tractor. It pulled a harvester and apparently had a hydraulic drawbar similar to this. Everything is gone now except the tab welded to the drawbar with the hole in it for the cylinder. Would’ve been a neat setup to see.

Pretty wild Joe found one of those for you!! I really enjoy the how to videos of you will, and I am looking fwd to seeing it in action!! Thank you very much Mr Charlie, for bringing us along!! I've seen pictures of these hitches before but have never seen one till now and I can really see how it works and why they would be needed in hilly country like you have. I had one field I could never get plowed right because it was a curved field and if I had a hitch like that it would have made a big difference in the way the plow worked. Pretty slick I got to say and a great addition to the tractor for sure. Bandit

With our hills, a hillside hitch makes a big difference in plowing. I use a semi-mounted International 720 plow I bought from Joe's son Ben. Obviously a hitch like I put on the 66 wouldn't work, but Ben built a hill side hitch into the plow itself using a hydraulic cylinder and the plate on the plow that the 2 lift arms attach too. On steep hills, you can lose over a foot of width due to the plow going down hill, or take a foot's worth of too much width if sloped the other way. That hillside hitch allows you to make constant adjustments which really helps. My dad had built a hillside hitch for the drawbar of that Oliver 1650 I have, and it was nice for plowing with the drag-type Oliver plow I had before the semi-mount. I'll bet a farmer came up with the original idea. Thanks for stopping by, my friend.

@@pagrainfarmer The only tractor I ever plowed with that plowing on a curve wasnt a problem was an AC WD with an AC mounted plow on it. You pulled just in front of the back tire underneath it and the first bottom was just behind the tire so plowing on a curve was never a problem unless it was a really tight curve and even then it wasnt bad but not ideal plowing for sure. I have no doubt in my mind a farmer came up with the idea as a farmer is the first to see the need for such a hitch in the first place, Engineers see things on paper but the farmer is in the real world and see what needs to happen in real time. A lot of people can use a product for what it is and cant see how it could be improved so it worked better and farmers are the same way but there are some who can look at and use something and modify it to work better. I guess I fit into that category cause I always come up with ways to use stuff for something else or change it so it works better, Kind of like putting an AC corn head on a JD combine and it working great . I used to love that magazine Farm Show that showed this kind of stuff cause it really showed the Enginuity of farmers building stuff they needed. I havent seen that magazine in years or even if they still put it out. Bandit

@@banditfarmer1900 Yeah, I've known a lot of farmers with a high degree of ingenuity - they could fix anything, modify what they had, and come up with solutions to problems they had. They aren't/weren't necessarily "book smart", but when it came to fixing or fabricating something, they could always get the job done. Give them a torch, grinder, and a welder, and they were ready to go.

@@pagrainfarmer I guess I could say I was lucky for the way I grew up and for the people I was around when I was younger. One uncle worked at GE and was a Tig Welder another uncle was a general welder another did plumbing and electrical work another was a carpenter by trade and I was around a lot of good mechanics and a lot of older farmers who had hogs cattle sheep as well as crops. I learned a lot from these guys being around and working with them. From general farm stuff to engine overhauls to building a barn or house and doing electrical and plumbing. Being on the farm you learn to be a jack of all trades and really you have to be or have very deep pockets to pay someone to do things for you. Well not having deep pockets myself I had to learn how to do as much as I can myself and got good at using what I had on hand . At this point I can say nothing I've built or welded has ever failed but I have fixed a lot of stuff over the years that others have already tried to fix and had to reweld or rebuild what they fixed. LOL Some of these were pretty comical fixes at best ! LOL I had 2 great uncles who were engineers that never went to school for it and they could build anything they wanted, School isnt everything, I know lot of people who are very book smart but have no commend sense what so ever or know how to do anything at all when it comes to real world stuff. I never went to collage cause I knew it wasnt for me, I'm more hands on kind of a guy that gets things done or fixed and moves on to the next thing. I know way to many people who went to collage and have degrees that never put what they went to school for to there working life, A lot of money spent for nothing. But looking back now I still wouldnt have gone to collage might have done a few things different but its still been a pretty good life so far. You are who you are from how you grew up the people you were around and what you were smart enough to learn along the way. I may not be rich but I'm comfortable and can do just about anything I want or build it and thats what life has taught me. What I've learned is all the stuff they didnt teach you in school ! Bandit
