Ego is the self protective mechanism in all of our minds to help to protect against hurt. Consequentially, for the fear of physical hurt someone might be overly agressive or passive to protect against it. For the fear of lacking respect of others we will modify our personality so that others will see us with respect. For the fear of lacking respect of ourselves we will lie to ourselves, we will be overly prideful and narcissistic. Having a bias toward what puts us in a good light versus what is true. For fear of not belonging to a group with love and acceptance, we will take abuse to simply escape isolation. For fear of not having enough resources we will be greedy and selfish. Speaking from experience its the points in my life where I have no ego that I am able to see the whole picture and be truly intelligent.
How is it possible that the "Talks at Google" series all have issues either with audio quality, video quality, or both. For a company that prides itself on being on the cutting edge, it is really embarrassing. But thanks for the free content.
Let me cut it short for you Ryan "Success does not mean calamity and happiness" You cant do everything you want.Achieve anything you imagine.the problem is again you will never know what you need unless the universe shows you.and that is achieved thru humbleness,love,compassion...
I agree whole heartedly, but this is my question. No one can really eliminate ego. I mean ego always, without fail, manages to get in the way...Always. ANd worst of all, it becomes mixed with confidence and its only after we fall that we realise how much of our actions were egotistical.
That last question was probably the most important point to be addressed. While I do agree with Ryan's argument on Ego, I think since he mentioned that his book springs from personal experience, it is possible that he himself utilized his ego in achieving success - but perhaps due to a filtered experience of unfortunate events caused by ego, the positive weight that ego takes role in his personal success has been buried to the ground that its role (which can be extremely positive) wasn't mentioned in his talk. But that's just a speculation - I think Ryan's concept holds so much value though - all depends on the context of reality I suppose - so it'll be different for everyone.
Josh Ray I think his first book was very much fuelled by ego and he has said before how big the advance was. When writing his following book 'The Obstacle Is The Way', he agreed to half the advance he got on his first book because they didn't really want a book about stoicism so already he was checking it in order to do the work he wanted to do, as oppossed to getting another big advance and satisfying ego.
If you are unwilling to help yourself, no one can help you. Him mentioning his great success would only decrease the value of his message, because it would be only his Ego which would say something like “I’ve had great success”. People can only be guided through action, not words.
The other thing is, if it is pretty self evident that he is successful, there is no need for him to say it, because people who can see it will know already. And the only ones who see it are ones who have their Ego under control.
All you got to do is read Nietzsche on the ego.... basically no one knows what it is, yet most talk about it like the most well known thing. Bad ego, good ego... no one knows.
35:50... Oh man, I was wondering if he was going to bring up how Elon doesn't seem to have a lot of "empathy", and often "fails to see the perspective of others". This is one of the BIGGEST hurdles for people with Autism.
Not trying to be mean , but can you please describe it more straight .. I feel like this guy loves to talk and his vocabs is just amazing .. But you're talking something complex, it would be help us ( or it is just me) to talk simpler and straight
Ryan didn't answer the question at 43:52 , how can you write about how ego is the enemy and not be able to define the enemy or at least give a pictorial representation
Once upon a time, not too long ago, there was no "ego" it was a pleasant time, all was well in the land of do as you please. There was no forms of judgment of right or wrong, good or bad, and every wakeful second was lived in peace, joy and happiness flowed throughout the land. Until, one day, neutrality would slowly slip away to another dimension. Thus the birth of the mind, would slowly transform the intrinsic state to an egotistical state. A new life would take hold, a life evolved around chasing after sensations to feed the ego to reap the benefits of our labor, joy, happiness, fulfillment, that comes from attention and recognition...etc. Soon, I will hold workshops to teach people how to take back that life they had when the mind wasn't present. Imagine, what you could achieve with a silent mind? I teach what others are not teaching, it taps into a state of mind that allows you to live without concerns and worries, without an ego, without a self, without a "I" or a "me" To release the ego, you must release yourself, detach from yourself and when you do, you will let go of judgment of others and reality. It is in this state of openness that you tap into your fascination state, which gives you the ability to get your brain to make DMT. This level of fascination allows you to not see reality for what it is, it places you in a state to see what you can do with it, creatively. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having a strong ego, it's actually an absolute necessity for achieving any long-term goal in life. Name me one successful person that didn't have a strong ego. Ego isn't about being arrogant, it's about being strong-willed, persistent and not succumbing to following the path of least resistance. You can have a strong internal ego but still be humble and respectful outwardly. Your ego is your inner engine that keeps you focused on your long-term goals and aspirations in life. Your ego is all you've got that makes you "you", you can have a good ego or a bad ego but doing away with it is not an option unless you want to live your life as a vegetable...
We all live our own lives, have our own big or small egos. But ego is definitely not your true self and not something that makes you ”you” in a sense of being your true self. Ego, an ”unhealthy belief in our own importance” (as Ryan describes it) can definitely create behavior and actions that take some people far on some indicators, but I would never say that’s a necessity for anyone to succeed. Why couldn’t you be a very strong-willed, persistent and focused individual on your long-term goals without a big ego, with being your true self? Well, it will take a great amount of bravery, self-confidence, knowing who you are and the courage to be that person, not feeling the need to please everyone to begin with, but it's damn well possible to us all. Not an easy task, but deeply rewarding and I strongly believe a key to your biggest potential. Why would your ego be the inner engine that keeps you focused, all you got that makes you "you"? To me, that sounds more like a bad self-esteem. With a smile on your face, have some confidence in yourself, don’t be so pessimistic about your own abilities! :) Love & respect!
Ego is the Enemy is most Egotistical statement you can ever say obstacle is the way was great book but you didn't understand what you are saying on 2nd book at all most of the Egotistical behavior come to fruition becasue of suppression of ones Ego not the other way around by attacking and suppressing what is naturally there you only make it worse becasue you deny and bury it instaed of allow it and examine it consciously this clearly shows ryan himself didn't imply what he read in to his personal practice you just wrote a book about how to grow the negative Ego even more with superficial positivity on it great job mate grea job..
Read the book. Mediocre at best. Stories were nice, it’s the morals the author tries to frame that don’t add up. He puts his own context on various stories throughout history and derives assumptions that are quite subjective. Ego might be an enemy, but the book does a poor job explaining why.

@Iestyn Evans I completely agree with this statement
Beautiful
This is a Brilliant Talk. I ignore the Audio Quality, and listened to what he's saying.
How is it possible that the "Talks at Google" series all have issues either with audio quality, video quality, or both. For a company that prides itself on being on the cutting edge, it is really embarrassing. But thanks for the free content.

you can't really completely eliminate it, but that's why you check yourself. remain aware of yourself.
Being aware of the Ego on a CONSISTENT basis is already 65% of the way there to control it. You cannot control it without being aware of it.
The last 35% is suppression of the Ego’s emotional response into direct translation in body language or speech.
Always enjoy his book list, glad to see his talk here
Google, please get yourself a Zoom audio device so that you can properly record from the mic and not from the speakers! This barely listenable.

. . . wow awesome book report!
great question at 43:52
How are you Google and have this quality of audio...
All you got to do is read Nietzsche on the ego.... basically no one knows what it is, yet most talk about it like the most well known thing.
Bad ego, good ego... no one knows.
Gotta love the irony of all the Stoicism readers bitching about mic quality on a FREE fucking video
Good point
31:20 it's wrong to believe you're great?

11:37 so telling himself that he was a loser was safe??
lowkey only marginally better than a drive thru
The most egotistical thing anyone can do in life is try to control or rid their ego.
Fact
No
Idiocy
Wrong
This video disillusioned me so hard
Going off topic is the enemy
i feel shame about my success? so i guess it's the same ego problem? flipped around?
I appreciate Holiday's work but this audio is terrible and inexcusable for tech giant Google, need to stop listening to it.
If you have a name, you have ego, right off jump. It just made you somebody.
these guys are working at google and the audio is still worse. how can this happen?
"Uhm' Uhm Uhm Uhm haha - great work Ry
There is healthy & unhealthy ego.
Don't be fooled.
What is the speaker actually trying to say? Rambling on and on with no visible contextual line

ego is two sides of the same coin
Oversimplification
Ego is the Enemy is most Egotistical statement you can ever say
obstacle is the way was great book
but you didn't understand what you are saying on 2nd book at all
most of the Egotistical behavior come to fruition becasue of suppression of ones Ego
not the other way around
by attacking and suppressing what is naturally there
you only make it worse
becasue you deny and bury it
instaed of allow it and examine it consciously
this clearly shows ryan himself didn't imply what he read in to his personal practice
you just wrote a book about how to grow the negative Ego even more with superficial positivity on it
great job mate grea job..
Guy steals the theme from Revolver and all the shrinks in the final credits and makes it big. #quickclickgen
