    The engineering in these is so much more elegant than the software versions of today, so much work went into their design

    Thank you for uploading this video! I am going to try to repair my Mom's 80s model chiming clock. I think it was over-wound, but it also sometimes chimes extra on some of the hours... But then doesn't chime the half hour on most others. I know for a fact it's never been cleaned, so I am hoping that is the majority of the problem. Your video gives me some good ideas on how to do this!

      Overwound is not a real thing

    I bought one of these clocks new in the early 90's, from JC Penny. I still have it and it still works,!

    What did you do between the time skip at 1:49 to 1:50. I have this same exact mechanism and after unwinding it and cleaning the back there is no movement in the gears. I tried doing a little bit of winding in case that was the issue and still, nothing.

      I’m pretty sure I had just scrubbed it with isopropyl alcohol on the toothbrush and when I flipped the mechanism over it started to chime.

    Not the recommended safe way of letting down a mainspring. If nothing else, cut a slot in a 1Inch x 4 inch diameter dowel to slip the key in and allow the dowel to do a controlled spin in your grip as you release the click or ratchet. Lots of UA-cam videos showing how to do it safely.

    I recently bought a Kassel 31 day wind up clock but it’s missing oddly enough the pendulum and the key I’m wondering if those can be replaced I see replacements on Amazon. I’m just not sure if it matters what pendulum or if it’s a certain type of a key it’s a wall chime clock 31 day, any help would be appreciated

    I have an Ergo almost exactly like the first one you showed. I just picked it up but when I got it, the pendulum weight was off. I put it back on, now the clock's beat is off. I set it last night just before I went to bed, it was 15 minutes slow the next morning. I can't find any helpful information on figuring out what the beat needs to be, so can you tell me what BPH you set that one to?
    Also, heads up to anybody else reading this, when you release tension from the winds, wear a very thick glove. If that key slips while you're trying to help it backwards, it's going to hurt.

    That was a real good deal on the clock, and a simple fix. I bought a big clock, the chimes work but it doesn't stay running. I have released the tension on the main spring and rewound it, it seems to wind with no problem, no binding at all, but yet it doesn't keep ticking when I move the pendulum. So, I'll now do a cleaning and oil it. You mentioned using alcohol to clean your clock, is that safe on the metals?

      Alcohol is safe on medals, but if there’s a coding it might strip it off, you could also just use Clock oil to clean it.

    Inherited a wall clock from a family member that also seemed "over wound" on the upper left (of three places on the face to wind it) but I appreciate now in watching other videos that there is apparently a "stop" and so it can't really be over-wound. Hope it's not a worn pivot; crossing my fingers that it just needs a good cleaning. Question: Is there a safe way to let off the tension? (The video makes it look easy but I have read elsewhere that one needs to use a release tool rather than a key and to wear safety goggles….) Also, for letting the pressure off a Westminster chiming clock would it be necessary to release the tension off of more than one point? Thanks.

      When I was relieving tension from the spring, I pulled back the little ratchet mechanism with a plastic prybar, and had the key inserted in to the slot and turned it slowly. Honestly safety goggles probably are not a bad idea. I had the key slip on me once and it hit my finger pretty good.

    I couldn't see the levers you were pushing to unwind the coils. I have my grandmother's clock, similar in look to yours inside. The coils are so tight. I've oiled it, let it sit, and can't figure out how to get them to unwind. If you can show that process much slower with camera aimed at it, or tell me what I'm doing wrong....lol I would be eternally grateful!!! I so want to cherish this family piece.

      @HI-FI_  2 роки тому +1

      Well, I don’t have this clock anymore, but if yours is similar the levers should be right next to the winding shaft. Be careful if you are using the key to unwind it though because it can slap your hand if you loose control.

    I would highly discourage you from using the clock's winding key as a letdown key, as if you're not careful, the wings on the key can spin violently and tear a chunk out of your finger. I recommend using a smooth-handled letdown key if you have one.

    • @HI-FI_
      @HI-FI_  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah found that out the hard way, didn’t loose a finger but I got a bruise.

    • @geobrown9413
      @geobrown9413 Рік тому

      Make an oversized "file handle" that slips over the key, for complete control.

      I can second that comment about it violently unwinding and bruising fingers and scaring the be-jesus out of me. I have that exact clock model. It’s an eBay special.

    In Australia clocks like these can't be found in thrift stores anymore.
    Instead you might find then in secondhand stores or in antuique stores for a ripped off price and they usually need a lot of professional work to get them going right again.😊

    That is not a safe way to let down the mainsprings as you could hurt yourself. You need to get a mainspring let down tool if you intend to work on any other clocks. As for the term over wound that is not possible. It’s just that the movement needs disassembled and cleaned then re oiled.

    Very nice video. Thank you for posting this video.
    I have exactly same wall clock , it is 18 years old clock; and it certainly stops moving the pendulum , the chime is still working if I turn the minute hand to 12. I can’t wind up the clock - looks like it is jammed. Where do you live : California? Can you fix the clock and I will pay you 🙂?

    • @HI-FI_
      @HI-FI_  2 роки тому

      No, Im far from California, but I’m sure there is someone there who can probably do it.

      I can wind up the chime - the right side hole , but I can’t wind up the left side- it is hard and can’t make any turn with the key. Do you know what is the problem ? Could you please teach me what to do to release the tension or resolve the stuck issue?
      Thank you very much!

      This was NOT a professional repair this is a diy thing that will likely cause the clock to eventually stop working go to a real clock shop to get it fixed

    No such thing as over wound.
