- Music video for a song by Of Montreal.
This was my first time really color-correcting and I wanted to see what I could make with little to no lighting equipment. Some shots here definitely could have used it, but oh well. It's just a fun little goof.
Happy pride month gangery. - Розваги
this is so awesome sauce i love this!!!
thats what im sayin!!
agreed!!
I also wished my crush was a girl so I could pass as straight but I guess it’s not that simple
Absolutelyyyyy
True
This feels like the kind of video you'd find and realize it's 11 years old
Tbf the original music video is 16 years old
It sounds old tbh. Like something youd hear in the early 2000s.
@@bryn1063This song is from the late 90s lol
@Del-dee that too. It just sounds old. It's cool that such a niche song could still be played to this day.
@@NakedWyverns I was pleasantly surprised to find it wasn't 11 years old, just to see you say this😂
What really gets me is Tim's indifferent/bored expression during all of this while the narrator spills his heart out. Like Tim couldn't care less about whether the narrator is there or not
I read it as Tim feeling rejected by not feeling understood by the narrator, and then throwing away the relationship for good bc it would never work
@@jackbennett2269 Oh, interesting! Like Tim wanting this relationship, but the narrator can't accept it because they're both men, and so the narrator is wishing Tim was born a girl instead of appreciating Tim for who he actually is
He’s Selfish though
that's fascinating, i interpreted it as Tim being oblivious to how his friend feels about him. he's just minding his own business, completely unaware of what the narrator's true feelings are.
Perhaps Tim is tragically straight. 😔
Every 10 years 2 dudes make a live action music video of this song. It’s destiny

The narrator walking away from the table while the spaghetti is left sitting there is really heartbreaking, because it shows he understands the relationship is never happening, yet his feelings still remain. I think we’ve all been there tbh.
Still here
This gives 2010's youtube and I'm here for it
I agree! I love this and want more of this really homemade style!! Everything on youtube is so overproduced now. This is exactly what made youtube great 10 years ago :)
It’s funny because this is a recreation of a video from that era. I love both versions

Same! It makes me feel nostalgic i dont know why
The original video is
YEAHH!!
i LOVE this, the fact that this song came out so long ago and you're using it now + the modern details and all the ideas you used for the visuals
of Montreal has been one of my favorite bands since middle school. Commenting because none of my friends like them lol
@@taterthot3776 im so tired of sucking-
Same! A girl in eighth grade introduced them to me on the bus a few years after this song was released and I have loved them ever since
You don’t know HOW MUCH I love this. The way at the end all the shots are the same as before, but without the Tim guy, was just so heart-breaking.
falling for a straight friend is the worst
this.
If y’all want the wildest story - I fell (fell hardddd) for my straight best friend. She would talk for hours about guys she liked, but all I could do was dream that she was talking about me. Anyway, the guy she ended up dating tried h00king up with me, and she actually h00ked up with me to “get revenge” on him for trying to cheat. She says it was just to get revenge- but I’ve never been the same since 😭💀
@@sapphosgirlfriend holy whattttt
@@sapphosgirlfriend dang- well I hate too say it but you should probably tell her she’s probably not straight-
@@harold-garner-998 and we’re like still friends toooooooooo- I don’t know how I’m remotely normal
The bit where the spaghetti was thrown in the bin was heartbreaking
I absolutely love the subtle differences between the two's poses and eyes to get the grasp of how different their personalities are
ik im reaching let me reach. i like how the narrator leaves without dumping his spaghetti, which strikes me as him finally giving up on the friendship but his love for tim is still ln the table should tim ever wants it. love the video !!
*on the table
I had a similar thought!!
I love how all the shots were Tim and the person singing in the rooms at different times as if they were still somewhat close, and then it was just the guy singing in those places 😭
the way theyre not in the same shot (and the bed they're sleeping on is a single) until the end and time throws the spaghetti out and doesn't make eye contact OH MY GOD the yearning is real
0:22 is the scene that gets me personally. I don't know how to describe it, but the way that if you squint, it looks like they're together
This is a great re-creation of the original song. Making the actions described in the lyrics appear in the video was a nice touch to me.
I'm also glad that each time this song is being recognized more and more despite how old it is.
i love this!! i like how they hardly exist in the same space; when tim flashes in, the other guy goes out, and vice versa.
This is what true love is: lying in bed being dumb, having spaghetti, taking the day off work when they’re sick, getting engaged
Why can’t we love our homies as they are, as we are? This was done really well btw! 😍
Nope. Love is taking care and responsability of the relationship, for good and bad, and not just some pre-teenager sh1t. Love is what your dad or mom does everyday, waking up and work from day to night to assure that you don't have to worry for the basics. That is love, and not just a simple mundane emotion.
@@an0N1M921I don't think that is love, because love is not only felt in a relationship
@@an0N1M921that's one form of love. It really depends on the person.
oh my gosh this gives so much "high school film class project vibes" in the best way possible-- it's so simple yet conveys the story so well this is gorgeous thank you for sharing!
Late bloomer bi men be like
Yeah.. yeah.
Fr fr
@@onthedre it can be bi if you look at it like. it's "tim I wish you were a girl" because protag thinks "if you were born a girl, I could love you more openly, but you're a man, so I have to hide it." a gay guy wouldn't love a girl, obvs. imho
@@kirbyspaladin9153also it can represent the repression/denial of your feelings as someone discovering their bisexuality later in life. Sometimes a sexual orientation can become a sort of personality trait for someone, and then being faced with the fact that you're not straight can be really weird and confusing. So these feelings can manifest similarly to this
@@takimi_nada It could be, but he specifically says he has never felt these feelings for a girl

i love this music video sm, love all the details of how unreciprocated the lyrics are and how distant they feel with the camera position and such, which just makes the poor pining singer's rejection all the more harsher, happy pride month to you as well
don’t mind me just watching this on loop for the next few hours-
This is so fucking good holy shit? I really love the general unresponsiveness of tim until the end where he throws away the spaghetti
I love this! Good job! One of my favorite albums of all time being done the justice it deserves! 🤍
I love Of Montreal so much this is the best thing to pop up on my feed in sooo long😭😭
Woah, this is really good. I loved the parallels of them being in the same place at seperate times
i LOVE this song so much man, I'm very happy to have seen this video that was released literally yesterday, and not 5 years ago
oh my god i love how the facial expressions are used in this video. the singer most of the time looking at the camera or looking at tim, while tim seems to be looking just beyond the camera, not directly acknowledging it (the singer's feelings). and when he is put face to face with the singer, he won't look him in the eye, and is one of the few moments when tim is directly facing the camera that you can't see his eyes. and when tim gets up from the table is one of the few moments the singer stop mouthing the words showing the disappointment at tim's direct rejection
i have loved this song for years and i’m glad to see it recognized and used in this way! beautifully haunting work
Probably my favorite interpretation of this song
I love how the video really accentuates the feeling of limerent longing that the song captures since the Tim in question has this blank silent face. Really good!
i love how the quick cuts make it seem like theyre in the same place but never next to each other, like theyll never really be close in that way? idk i thought that was cool. great video!
one of my favorite songs of all time, your video really captures the loneliness and sorrow in the music
I really love this video :>
I also really love this song so I've seen a whole bunch of different versions of videos + animations of it and I think this one hits at a different feeling than the other ones.
The animations I've seen of this usually depicts the two people as guys and plays into the very twee and cutesy, homey atmosphere described in the singer's thoughts, eventually concluding in the two guys realising they like each other. Similar to this video, 'Tim' is never actually depicted as a girl because the whole point of the song is that the singer doesn't actually want Tim to be one but wants to justify their confused feelings towards him. This type of video ends in a very cutesy and nice way.
One older video I saw was of a guy (not Of Montreal) singing this live to an audience and they basically were just laughing all the way through at it, thinking it's a joke, which in a meta way kinda links to the singer's view: this audience, at the time, saw an actual gay relationship as entirely outside of the realm of possibility (like the singer does). While the singer rationalises this contrast between their worldview and their feelings by imagining Tim as a girl, the audience rationalises it as a ridiculous joke. It was quite depressing to watch
Another music video basically interpreted the song way too literally and depicted Tim as an actual girl and was basically about how the singer was weird and how their desire for that relationship was ultimately weird, implying this by depicting Tim as bored and kinda disgusted by the singer. You could really feel the complete lack of empathy the UA-camr had for the original song and it was also depressing in its own way
But this video hits on something different!! As other commenters have said, I also think it's about unrequited love and the way you visually convey the separation between the singer and Tim (which none of these other videos have done), alongside Tim's blank + bored expression is really powerful. I especially like this part between 0:45 and 0:48 where in each shot when it comes back to your character looking more and more towards the floor, as if they're starting to realise that this fantasy won't come true.
uhh my apologies for the essay and also how clunky it is (i wrote it in a rush lol) but thank you for making this video! it's great :3
Please, don’t apologize for this rant. I had a pleasure reading this. ☺️🙌🏾
It was the length of this analysis that intrigued me to read this comment, thinking to myself: “this person must have an in depth analysis on this video and song, to have had typed up an essay worth of a comment.”
I want to state, that I haven’t seen the other depictions of this song, that you mentioned above.
Though, I will say based on the descriptions of these other versions, I concur with your sentiments about them, and how they missed the point of the song, or how they couldn’t fathom the concept of a gay relationship existing.
As you remarked, this video really hit the nail, and did the song justice with its own twist of the song.
With its visuals of Tim showing lack of interest throughout the duration of the video, and near the end, the narrator comes to the bitter conclusion that their fantasy of them being in an existing relationship was not possible.
you did a great job of the cinematography in this, I especially like the rim lighting for these shots 1:12 nice editing too.
This may be your magnum opus. Banger song but damn the video just makes this hit so hard. I just thought "oh silly song fun times" until it clicked for me at the end and I had to rewatch it 3 times to really think about everything. Very well done and absolutely heartbreaking and very much relatable. Thank you for this
This video is literally perfect. It feels so personal and like I’ve just walked into someone else’s life and I can feel all they feel and see all they see. It is absolutely amazing !!
This is incredible. The framing and cuts?? Super cool to look at. Plus, a great song. You definitely did it justice! ❤
I love this song, falling for a straight friend is heartbreaking.
this song genuinely hits so hard thank you for making this
i love it, towards the beginning when it showed them in the same locations, but never together in the frame at the same time. very heartbreaking and cute little video for my favourite of montreal tune

That kind of music video that you nee to watch for a couple of times. You're amazing guys
This is so awesome! You capture the feeling so perfectly, my partner and I agree that this is exactly what the music video for this song should look like. My partner even said that your video made them like the song even more. Great job with this :)
Ugh I’ve loved this song for sooooo long, but it’s only these past couple of months I’ve really been able to understand it.
It’s not that I mind liking a boy, it’s the thought of what he’ll think of me if he knew. I don’t want to lose him.
This was such a beautiful way of using this song, I love it very much!
happy pride month!! absolutely wonderful video - equal parts heartbreaking. 10/10 work. both you look really good too. banger song.
the ending sequence where he is alone in all of the places he imagined tim... crying
Nice to see people still listen to this song-
The transitions/angle at 0:46 was probably my favorite honestly really fun albeit simple cinematography
I love this, it feels like an old UA-cam video in the best way possible
Perfect video for this song, the settings all feel very intimate and personal and the cuts between the two characters fit both the music and lyrics.
the shots on this were insane i loved the way you portrayed this story
i’ve had this song stuck in my head for days without opening youtube, and the first thing on my recommended was this when i opened yt!! awesome video!
Wow incredible work!!! I absolutely love the simplicity of this! It communicates the message in such a real and personal way! I also love how the cuts never have both characters in the same place as one another until the end which just amplifies the rejection even more. The one time they’re in the same place together and one of them clearly doesn’t feel the same way. Oof agh ow ouch o(-(
This is epic and reminds me of TMBG or Dead Milkmen in some bizarre current folksy thing that just has me put it on repeat over and over again ... Also, the many tribute videos and art/cartoons made for this song are amazing ... Obviously sweeping our social cerebellum ... Bravo!!!
The dimmer colours, the thrown away spaghetti , the way he stopped fidgeting,

Popped in my recommendations wasn't really expecting anything and was blown away with how simple yet very complex this was
God this music video is less than 2 minutes long and I teared up a little at the implications because of how many times I've been through this with my straight friends.
I actually love how they are always “apart”, and then even when they are in the same shot, at the table, they are at opposite ends further showing that they are as far as could be. It’s a really cool detail.
Amazing work. Love everything about this.
I listen to this song all the time and didn’t know there was a music video!:D keep up the good work my guy !!x

I've seen other takes on this song as a music video but this one really hit well! good job on this, i really like how you had the camera split the "characters" up throughout, like splitting reality from fantasy.
