Hot Rod Corvette Hack - The Long Version

  • This is the video version of the Corvette Hack story that appeared in the Nov. '10 issue of Hot Rod magazine. You'll see the Hot Rod staff shred an '85 Corvette, cutting off parts until it was nearly a bare frame. The point? To see how much the car's performance improved as it dropped weight (into the Dumpster).

Really hard to watch that as I am a proud C4 owner. However, the car looked to be in bad shape before it got butchered so I guess it's alright.

It’s not like they’re whistling diesel and destroying something that could be brought back around. Plus it became the “vet cart” which was pretty awesome to look at lol so it’s not like they destroyed the whole chassis

Not necessarily... I grew up with old Vettes and I love the Vette Kart. I love Vettes but I'm probably not a "Corvette Guy" though because I love lots of other stuff too. I've met plenty of douchebags who would put my '72 down because unlike them I actually drove mine every day and it hadn't been restored within an inch of it's life (by someone else). The guys I've known who actually drove them, modded them and raced them were pretty cool-in other words gearheads like us. The numbers matching resto show car crowd, not so much...

That Corvette had been completely ratted out by the previous owner anyway, these guys managed to make it from junker to something awesome and unique. Then Roadkill made it into a *fucking sweet* buggy in (the most recent as of this writing) Episode 35.

Yes but that was back when emissions took over, and they were experimenting with turbo chargers and shit. GM is still GM, chevy or buick. Vette ran 14 sec quartermile stock with 230 hp, not bad for 230HP - 1990 Zr1 c4 (300hp) would most likely smoke a regal gnx.

    • @dragkid185

TwoWheelJockey most Honda Civic models can easily beat a C4 while stock. Hell, a Toyota Sienna minivan can walk a C4. Still, C4 is a good platform for building a dirt cheap hotrod that doesn't suck. Stock motor is meh, but it doesn't have to be...

    • @tenzinsmith
      @tenzinsmith 4 роки тому

Acura TL GTLM No fucking way a Sienna could walk a C4. C4s still have almost 400 pound-feet of torque, and between 250-300+ horsepower. That’s not bad. Not to mention they handle sublimely.

You guys should sponsor a different fire/rescue company for every episode. A rescue engine or squad has all the tools to do everything in this video, such as removing doors and cutting vehicle glass, just to name a few tricks. They would be able to showcase their abilities, tools and skills as a part of demonstrating their way of keeping people safe in the event of an emergency on public roads and educate folks by means of a different practical sense. It would also be a great way to support local emergency response companies and raise awareness, while still having fun in a professional setting.

  • @AtomicReverend

Some people need to chill out and put things in perspective. First off the car was completely clapped out to begin with. Want a complete money pit? Start fixing this thing up. It wouldn't be worth that much fixed up anyway. Yes I understand I don't like trashing stuff either. It would be one thing if they just drove it off a cliff (which honestly would've been pretty funny too) but they made something really cool out of it and proved their point in the process. I love Corvettes, grew up with them (was almost born in one), and was sitting in the passenger seat banging gears for my dad while he was driving since I was old enough to walk. When I was old enough to drive years later, my dad and I fixed it up and I daily drove that very same '72 I grew up in through high school, college, and for years after that with a suit on haha and no AC in Florida, and I STILL have it. Makes me a lot more of a "Vette guy" than some obnoxious douche bag who paid for someone else to restore or outright bought a restored car and now thinks he's hot shit and is now an authority on the subject. Kinda like the annoying all of a sudden weekend warrior Harley crowd who buys the bike and all the clothing to go along with it. REAL Vette guys love the Vette Kart.

***** LOL dude that story is hilarious! HAHAHAHA. Spray on tan 80's guy with a crackwhore? Hey bro the car was a gift to me. I don't go around hot rodding. The car is 220hp and does like a 13s quarter mile. LOL, trust me it's not an ego thing. BUT it's very fun to cruise with the top off in the mountains and IMO it looks good stylistically. True, it lacks in power but I think it still has lots of torque off the line.

goes to show that colin chapman was always right. 2.3 seconds on such a short track is a massive improvement. and all simply by pulling off useless stuff and some slight setup adjustments. imagine if this thing had a better weight distribution. like if you'd make it mid-engined. it would be a weapon. and basically a slightly overweight lotus 2-eleven

Taking a factory vehicle that was already engineered and making it faster for as little money as possible with form following function (for worse most of the time) in the tireless pursuit of speed. I am glad Hot Rod isn't all about diaper polished billet rods that cost 6 figures and never see rain. I want Hot Rod to be a man's magazine with humor, ingenuity and fun. So, I hate to be that import-guy that watches Hot Rod Magazine's videos (even though I am.) But I have to point out that to get similar weight figures to Japanese Imports of the vintage, they had to remove literally everything. LITERALLY everything. At which point, even the performance was ruined. Now, if an import (an S13, for instance) had similar power figures, which is wholly possible, you get into true sports car territory.

My question is, what was the fucking point of this exercise? Yeah, you hacked it all to fuck (which was dumb to begin with), so what were you trying to prove, exactly? When a car weighs less it makes it faster, or when suspension/rigidity is compromised, it doesn't go as fast in corners? Who didn't know that? What will you do w it now? Drive it? Hah! Sell it? You trashed most of the valuable parts you could have had "beer money" with. For a car mag to do this, it's just fucking ignorant.

one comment was that HOT ROD destroyed a Piece of C4 history.... UM HELLOOOO the C4 is a dark moment in Corvette History.. i think its one of those things that GM wishes they could forget.. up until they went to the convex tail- lights... plus this Vette was a POS when they started with it
    I enjoyed this

Aww that's cute. I've parted out, cut up, and thrown more corvettes in the trash than you will probably ever drive. You learn real fast how overrated and terribly built corvettes are, especially C4's. My family has had a corvette restoration shop for 32 years so I spent many summers parting out cars. Get over yourself.

The car was junk as I said. They are in Cali, they have very high smog laws on cars there. The car failed and was no longer street legal. They had fun with it. You don't need to have an argument to show an example, make a point, or have fun! Fun isn't always logical, if it is, then you're doing it wrong! Do you see how it works?

its a mid 80s corvette, it wasn't the best time for corvettes. it didnt look good and it didnt handle very well. the dash was all electronic, they thought that this was the future for cars but it was just shitty. I love corvettes but the c4 was bad, it was when a lot of cars went to shit like the camaro and the mustang.

that corvette was pretty fucked up by the time they got it...with a standard 350 in it, and a manual trans (that they most likely saved) it wasn't all that valuable. it looked like it had had an interior fire, and had been vandalized. it was going to be scrapped, but they proved a point and had fun doing it. fuck the haters, I enjoyed this video.

the only risc i see with doing this is that you loose some of the structural integrity so the chassis ends up flexing in the corners. Other than that, softer spring rates and low tire pressure with the correct suspension geometry on that car should be really fun

  • @Sarcasticscum
    @Sarcasticscum 14 років тому

Seriously people?? This 'Vette was roached. The interior was.. GONE. The Paint was... FADED all to hell, and it didn't even have the correct fuel/air intake system! It was carbed!
That car was ready to be scrapped, and because it was a C4 gives it all the more reason. Stop bitching.

Does anybody know what "AMF" means? I've seen that a few places as well as on the rear of this Corvette.

Because 1974-1986 Vettes where shit, just like all American cars were during the Emissions years. There is a reason you see a lot of love for pre 1974 and post 1986 when EFI and newer technologies finally let cars have power and performance again.

So.. basically you are saying you either leave positive comments on cars that is up to your standards, you leave vulgar/nasty comments towards women you think is attractive, or you complain and tear down everything that doesn't make sense to you?

it just seems like a waste to gain about 5-6 seconds off a ride for no reason. That looked like it might of been a great father/ son project to redo, but it is true it isnt anybody place to say what to do to a car that isnt yours

it looks like a cool way to destroy a car. dont want to be a complainer but( i know the but) you should show the use of jackstands or bracing to support the car so kids dont try the same thing in the future. cool hack cant wait for next installment

No one wants these corvettes. Trust me. They can be worth 5-10 grand and they sometimes ARE worth it but no one wants to spend that kind of money on bla 80's taste and the same interior quality/styling as a 1990 chevy pick up.

This isn't hot rodding. This is a side-show, a sad attempt to attract attention at any costs. Guess what, this isn't how you will be a successful publication in the 21st century. Make great cars. That will keep you going.

why not just unbolt the body and race the friggin chassis around with the guy in a wicker seat after he's had a dodgey curry the night before.

I know that 80's Corvettes aren't desirable YET, but someday they will be. The drivetrain and body looked fine from the video, it just looked like the interior was trashed. Even if it didn't pass emissions in super-restrictive California, it would be legal in areas without DEQ requirements. Seems like a waste to me. Just my opinion, as a Corvette enthusiast.

That's the dead pig car from "Myth-Busters". They put two dead pigs in it and sealed it up then put it in a steal box for a few months. that is why the thing is no longer worth driving on the road!

Yeah that's basically all I was trying to get through to that guy.. He couldn't understand the car was no good anymore and they was just having fun while showing how much difference weight can make.

i found this looking up what a naked corvette would perform like. it would be nice if this car ended up in the hands of a hobbyist track racer and was finished properly. i'd love to see that.

You had fun wrecking a car. Why not just put some corvette running gear in a small tube chassis to prove that "light is right ": Simple get one of those factory five super car kits....too easy. ha ha ha

I don't know man, I mean, they're fun to drive, but they're so damn small inside. I'm 5'10 155 pounds and I don't fit in a C4 comfortably... I'm thinking that might negatively effect their collectability.

should have given it a quick paint and a clean first. make it look like you were cutting up a good one. that would have brought the haters out.
