I cried when I finally read the lyrics to this song. Such a twisted song, beautiful voice singing dark lyrics about a hopelessness that never get's any better. Some wounds never heal, sometimes life doesn't change for for the better, this song captures that essence with such an allure. The ashes of dreams, perfect title.
As we knew from a distant interview, the poem for this song was written by the singer's (Emi Evans) father.
There's so many beautiful and surprising things about Nier's soundtrack, but of all the Japanese videogames I've played, the part of this song that shocked me the most is that it's in English AND it rhymes! That almost never happens in Japanese music with English lyrics.

To be fair, that's pretty much the whole idea behind the games overall outline for the background atleast.
It's still around for androids to enjoy though. If they can get their shit together.

In 2017 the sequel won soundtrack of the year. But, I maintain that the music from the first is far better.

I think the line you were having trouble with says "the night has left this tear-folded grief" to me, but even I can't be sure
"The night has left this ten-folded grief (? this line is like, weird sounding. Help?)"
best guess is that it implies a loss so great as to rival ten of the worst in your life; in other words, 'a really bad thing'
"The shadows extinguish the sun."
'No shadows' would make more sense in the context, though the sound is ambiguous.
I really need to finish game but alot ofbad things happen so fast as i progress through its kinda hard to not stop and play something that will cheer you up. its that depressing :(
@keithsimonh Fortunately I know what the phrase 'ten-fold' means, so I understood it meant a 'really bad thing'. The problem is the awkward phrasing and clearly hearing what I went with....
And yeah I'll change it to "no shadows" after so many comments.

I'm not so sure... It may help to listen to the .mp3 where it's much clearer which is what I've been doing... I really don't hear a 'come' at all. You would here the harder sound of the 'c'. I've listened several times now and I think she says "delusions are back".

I know it doesn't really make sense (but if look at the whole song in retrospect, not everything does - I dont know how you can break phantoms) but I almost certainly hear a "t" sound and her European accent makes the "can't" sound a little less harsh and more like 'come' but I still really hear "can't". Same with "day" unfortunately. You'll have to turn it up really loud or listen in headphones but to me there a pretty clear "day" and can't seem to hear a "ah" or "n" at all...

Oh! I never really focused on the "God" part - I heard it clearly as God at one point so I never listened for it in different ways. Now that you mention it, it sounds like it could be a lot of other things. I do hear 'of' before it, so it being 'back' wouldn't make sense... but I can't figure it out. Maybe 'black' or something?
@BloodyScreams mm, yeah it's weird, 'tear-folded' is just as possible now that I'm listening to the line, but even with that the phrasing is odd to say the least.

I came here from an Adventure Time strip. Was immensely satisfied with the Simon and Marcy episode. I probably should watch Cry play this game just 'cause of the song..I might just end up loving this game :) I doubt that I won't.

@Aivilo326111 Dont be so prejudiced with games based upon the music. For all you could know, this game could be some remix pacman game. Criticism aside, long story short, A man has a daughter with a deadly disease called the black scrawl, and is willing to do anything to find a cure. A mysterious book he discovers suggests that finding all the "Sealed Verses" for the book, can a cure be made for his daughter.
This song makes me sad for some reason.

The singer sings it as "Uh-gen," instead of "Uh-gain" making it not rhyme. I don't know why, but it just bothers me for some reason.
Of course, the whole song is bothersome and depressing, so there's no point really...
