i think the reason mudwings didn't get as much attention as the silkwings, hivewings, and leafwings was because of there being 7 tribes on phyrria opposed to 3 on pantala. there wasn't as many tribes tui needed to flesh out in arc 3 so they were able to get more screen time, but on phyrria since there was so many she needed to flesh out, it was going to be likely at least one of the tribes got put on the back burner, and that just happened to be the mudwings. i love the mudwings but they defiantly could have been handled better.
Mudwings are my second favorite tribe and I wish the books would so more with them. Like I have a head canon that because of the sandwing succussion that's why traditional families like with parents slowly died out with sibling forming close bonds. Like Older sibling would take care of the young while parents where fighting and that's how the idea of bigwings came to be to norm. I would love a book or even a wiglet to see what life was like during the war for mudwings!
That's probably not the case since in Arc 1, it's mentioned that no MudWing princess has ever challenged her sister for the throne, but I agree it'd be so cool to learn about
My biggest question I always had was how Mud Wings act in hybrid couples. Like does having dragonets with a Mud Wing is a guarantee they'd abandon/divorce you? Or do they stay? How would they treat their dragonets? There's a lot.
I think they still have large clutches of eggs, but theyre significantly smaller. Instead of five or six, its two or three. If they're going far enough to have a hybrid relationship, they must love their partner, so they'd probably stay with them--but still keep in contact with their sib group. Thats just my own thoughts tho!
I really like mudwings! They don’t have much info so it’s fun to add in little bits of lore and culture for any stories your ocs have. I have so many mudwing ocs XD
Mudwings are absolutely the not worst tribe. They don’t get enough attention because tui forgot they existed, and we were too busy focused on the other tribe’s lore. The third arc should have been a mudwing troop. Each book a new sib. That would have provided a fantastic set of characters, along with an interesting storyline where we could’ve learnt a lot more about phyrria’s and the mudwings lore. Their culture and dynamic is so interesting and unique, and the best out of all the tribes (imp). The tribes culture is very boring since it’s basically western culture, but mud-wings open up so many possibilities. She literally forgot about mud-wings so much that she has two characters named bullfrog
If we were to get a mudwing book, I think it should be a legends book or maybe even just a winglet revolving around the mudwing succession crisis which took place a couple centuries before the main series that Chameleon hinted at in book 8. This way, we could get to know more about the monarchy, culture of the tribe, sib relationships, and getting to see more of the ACTUAL kingdom. A lot of people might forget that when we saw the kingdom back in book one, it only took place at the Diamond Spray delta, which was said to be where the lowest born mudwings hatch. (Although that comment said by Kestrel could have just been to pick on Clay so take it with a grain of salt) I doubt the entire kingdom is just a giant boring bog filled with sleeping bunks and mud puddles here and there.
In the 5th book their queen plans a mass invasion on the icewings, bringing every mudwing soilder (which is basically their entire population) to a frozen wasteland, where they cant breath fire. Mudwings need warmth for fire, like icewings need cold for frostbreath, but even with all the mudwings icewings have sharp tails that could stab, their neck and backs are also decorated with spikes, frostbreath could be considered one of pryhia’s most dangerous weapon as only icewings have it. The mudwings whould not be used to the freezing cold, and the icewings are often depicted to have very sharp claws. I mean did you see what one of those things did to dune? (Incurable foot, and major damage to wings, plus likely an eye scar i cant remeber.) The icewings are also incredibly smart, Glacier wants blaze to be queen so that the only kingdom they border will be under the control of a sandwing who is idiotic. Not to mention the water around the icewings, “But mudwings can hold their breath underwater for up to an hour” yes, they can, but they cant stay in freezing cold waters for up to an hour without catching hypothermia. Honestly mudwings abilities, fire breathing only in warmth, and holding their breath under water for an hour are awful when compared to magic deathspit, venomous tail, FIRE.
It’s never been mentioned that ice wings need cold for frost breath? Winter used frost breath on peril in possibility (or whatever the name is for the hybrid camp)

I actually had an idea for a 4th arc, which would be about sora and umber possibly coming back to jade mountain or maybe they just come back to the story itself, and the protagonists would be from all the tribes that only got one protagonist- mudwings, skywings, rainwings, hivewings, and leafwings. SOMEONE HELP ME WRITE THIS
I like the mud wings from normally being laid back and care so much for their siblings. Yeah would love to learn more about them but I can't hold my breath for an hour so not going to try.
In the guide to the dragon world, mudwigns is the first chapter, and I read it yesterday and it was surprisingly good! Giving us some lore. (I like sawgrass lol) (and yes, I have the guide to the dragon world…. Am I th3 first person to get it!? I got it yesterday)
did you really get it already? where did you get it from, it says its not meant to come out till October 3rd so just wondering, i believe you but i wonder where you got it
In their defense once we get the newer book releases we'll get to learn more about them i still love the mudwings from the protagonist clay! i fell in love with this tribe! Its so wholesome with their siblings bonds! The culture and everything! The loyalty within this tribe is one that i honor and that i am especially towards my friends who feel like family :) (Also am i the only one who got Clay's name reference? Like he's the legit clay house for his friends and sibs? PFT-)
Tui confirmed that she either will or is thinking about a book that focuses on Umber and Sora in the future since she herself wanted to get back to those two since she kinda knows what's happening to them. Perhaps the reason she hasn't done it yet is due to the graphic novels coming out, book 16, etc.
"What happen if a bigwing doesn't hatch" Actually we have an answer, Clay was supposed to be his sibs bigwing if what they said about the size is true. So my guess here is more "if they were not helped to hatch then they'll instinctively acts like a bigwing". And then the question is more "what happens if it's an isolated egg"? Would they, in the lack of adult supervision, look after siblings that do not exist and be more likely to die? (Since, even if he could not help, Clay still hatched with the other four.) (And my Mudwing OC is more interesting than Bog (Who name can litteraly be translated by Bog, actually, which I'm proud of me for the accurate Mudwing name xd) and all he wants to do is to die because his sibs die and he felt he should have been in their place instead. Like, he would have volunteered himself believing it's a suicide mission and not necessarily asking to be explored that much from an exterior PoV)(That OC also tried multiple timed to starve himself to death and was "visibly underweight by any dragon's standard")(And that OC came from just having the stereotypes, Clay, and knowing Sibs exist)
(Said OC is also physically disabled. Basically he covered his left eyes with melted metal by accident trying to help his (fire-resistant) sister works metal and having a athsma attack and being a bit overprotective, which he learned was bad after that)
Personally I love Mudwings, mostly for the earthy color palette, and I love all the headcanons that the fandom had come up with. I really wish we got to know more instead of how their social structure works and terrible parenting
The BeetleWings evolved into HiveWings and SilkWings. If we considered them their own tribe, we could consider the Leaf/Rain ancestor tribe it’s own tribe as well IMO.
the mudwings key power is their constitution, Clay just as one example is likely ragdolled burned and beaten multiple times by kestrel and typically for him at least its just limping for a few days. either kestrel is very much holding back or clay is being subjected to stuff that would likely hospitalize Starflight and Glory and possibly kill sunny (Tsunami I consider to be an exceptionally sturdy seawing), move forward to his fight with fjord several deep cuts minor asphyxiation possibly severe frostbite on one of his wingtips again within a day or two he is healed enough to fight Peril with no lasting effects, and even having a chunk of leg taken out sorry you lose part of your thigh your in a wheelchair Clay ending up with a permanent limp is another example of just how hard it is to put a mudwing down its gotta be killed out right or they'll get back up and quicker than you think.
*SPOILERS FOR THE GUIDE TO THE DRAGON WORLD* I absolutely LOVE Mudwings. The new Guide to the dragon world really helped give us some insight to mudwing culture, like how blood red eggs were discovered in Moccasin's story, and the succession crisis that led to Queen Moorhen's family taking power as royals instead of the originals. Its very interesting, but still leaves room to flesh out some modern Mudwing cultures. I personally headcanon that they celebrate the harvest moon festival and things that revolve around agriculture and even some architecture.
As well as how mud heals them, if they had another power similar to earth bending that was secret because they were seen as dumb and boring that would be cool.
I think mudwings weren’t loves as much because of the design but I made a mud wing oc who has some ice wing blood and she made rare power using animus magic kinda like the blood red egg
Totally agreed. I can't possibly see how other people like tribes like NightWings, who tortured RainWings, even killed them, while MudWings, a perfect tribe, are just standing in the background, away from the world. Sure, MudWings aren't the shiniest, prettiest, or most powerful tribe in the series, but I can think of a number of reasons why MudWings are AWESOME! Also, I'm working on a WOF fan fiction on Wattpad starring my MudWing, Maple. If you guys could check that out sometime, it would mean a lot!
MudWings aren’t as “flashy” as the other tribes, like you mentioned. They are kind of basic in abilities and design, and the most interesting aspect of them is their unique social structure. This is why I have a personal head-cannon for them. MudWings are stocky dragons with a low-lying stature. They are slow, and the largest of the ten known dragon tribes. But don’t underestimate them. These dragons have an almost diamond-hard armor draped across their backs and a thick club-like tail, similar to ankylosaurs. Their horns are also thick, and usually have a sheep-like shape enabling them to ram into their enemies. Unlike the other tribes, the MudWings can only breathe fire if warm enough. But this is for a good reason. Their fire is similar to lava, due to them often eating rocks to help digestion, and can melt through almost any material (think gronckles from HTTYD). Some dragons are born from blood-red eggs, which makes their scales impervious to fire.
Also, they can still hold their breath for up to an hour due to their large lungs. And because they live so close to the RainWings, their armor scales have naturally adapted to be immune to their venom. But if a dragon gets to their soft underbelly, a MudWing is doomed.
Wings of fire needs the lore book and some more side books but it couldn't not survive another arc i feel like tui would make to many (more) plot holes and with the half baked ending of the 3rd arc (witch still pains meee) it wouldn’t go well, maybe she could do a au series but time skiping into the future would hurt the readers as everyone they know is no longer important and any new wars or threats wouldn’t make sense due to the later pushed over all friendliness of all dragons, im arc 1 everyone would fight for the sake of fight but through arc2 it felt less like dragons and more like lizards all walking around but a final series of mini story os dragons from every tribe eould be amazing (also love to see how much glory has changed she has had the most chcarter development by far)
Yeah, the MudWings were never my favorite tribe, but they do have some pretty cool traditions/culture!
Yeah, too boring, too dumb
