    Hi folks, In this video I show how Ponytail Palms have been used in a number of gardens here in southern California. Ponytail Palms aka Beaucarnia recurvata, are not Palms, not trees but they are succulents with a caudex base that stores water. They are native to southeastern Mexico and are adapted to annual seasonal droughts. ~ To see Ponytails , (a different species than B. recurvata), in their native habitat search UA-cam for a video titled Nature’s Calling : Puebla : In search of the Ponytail Palm , on channel Darren Burton.~ See the description of this video for more information.
    ~ Correction ~ I was wrong at 6:15 when I speculated that the spent flower stems on this particular plant were a year old. They are obviously this year’s summer inflorescences.

    Brings back memories of when I lived in so California. They grow so large in the ground!! Largest I've ever seen was at Cal poly Pomona campus. It was absolutely huge!!! As long as they live , it's probably still there. I have a large potted one that has a caudex about 15 inches wide. I bought it off a stand at the side of the road where an old gal sells old antique country items. It's about as tall as myself. A great looking tree. Thanks for the great tours down memory lane! Those are some awesome gardens!!! If I still lived out there I would do the same!!😄👍👍 Great video!!! From Morris park in the Ozarks, enjoy the warm weather!! We are under a winter ice storm warning occurring right as of this moment!!! Peace,Love ,Plants!!!✌💖🌵🌸🌴🌷🌲🌻🌳🌺

      Ice storms can wreck havoc for sure. ‘ Batten down the hatches’ ,and ride ‘er out. ~ I’ve seen a couple of ponytails bigger than I filmed herein but these are all within walking distance of my home, which certainly facilitates making a video! 😉

      Ponytails previously were more popular than nowadays in this area as landscape material. I think people got intimidated by their girth !

    Fantastic ponytails there! So big! I love ponytail palm a lot. It was one of my first succulents, 3plantlets, tiny as my thumbnail, and two of them are still with me almost 20 years after. Thanks for sharing those marvellous specimens.☺️👍👌😘💕

      Ponytails are pure fun to grow and look at. That’s quite an achievement to nurture your two plants for twenty years. I’m glad that you liked seeing these ‘elephant foots’ in the gardens of my area. - Take care, John

    Wow, some giant Beaucarnia species which you really see growing over here. I wonder if they will be able to survive our wet winter. I have noticed them in Los Angeles, with their unusual flowers. thanks for the tour. the outdoor look of California is always welcome. 👍👍👍👍

      Yes their size is quite impressive. They grow in Florida , (maybe only the warmer part), and places like Malaysia where it rains a lot year round. I believe their roots will rot if the plant is kept both too cold and too wet.

      Yes, these plants really make a statement in the landscape. The plants shown are from my surrounding local area here in southern California. It’s fun to share with folks what their ‘houseplants’ can become when planted in the ground in a frost-free climate. Thanks for watching. I’m glad that you enjoyed!

    That was a lovely and very informative video on the Ponytail Palm. The private garden in my last video also had lots of huge and old Ponytail but the one in your video was 15ft! Like wow!! And I never ever saw the flowers before so this was my first time seeing it. That cacti and succulent garden was to die for. It’s a dream garden for people like us. Very good share. I enjoyed seeing the garden your side of the world. Have a wonderful New Year 2021. From Malaysia 🇲🇾 to California, happy gardening 🧑‍🌾

    Wow! Didn’t know they could grow that big! 😱 love their caudex. I have only ever seen them in pots. That was a gorgeous garden you brought us to. Beautiful designs on their show plants. Loved the rainbow at the end of the video. Thank you for the info as well. Very interesting. Happy New Year! 🥳🌵🌼🌺👍

      Yes, they are no doubt ‘statement ’ plants. Very easy to grow and really the only care needed is a once a year clean up of spent flowers stems and dead leaves. No irrigation, fertilizer, etc.. ~ Happy 2021 . 🎉

    Amazing big specimens! Must be a decade old at least in the ground.

    • @Nhoj31neirbo47
      @Nhoj31neirbo47  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, one has to love these big Ponytails. I’m actually not sure exactly how old the plants in the video are. They grow relatively fast in the ground and in our climate. They are probably at least 20 to 30 years old, possibly much older. I believe most of these houses were built between 1920 and 1960, so the gardens have existed for a long time. Of course that doesn’t mean that the Ponytails have been there that long. You can but Ponytails this large from speciality nurseries in SoCal.

    That first image has pink flowers on top which I read means it's a Female Gendered Specimen...AND
    If ever ivory colored flowers are shown on a Ponytail palm, it's a Male specimen!
    Lean something new every day, they say...I say, HOW FASCINATING❣😊💚*🙏🏼

    Thanks for the tour. You said that the specimen with three caudexes was "planted on its side", but that is inaccurate. The three plants were planted together and upright initially, but as they grew, the caudexes spread out in that manner, naturally. I have grown three together and that is the way they grow. They cannot be plated on their side.

    My wife and I have 5 ponytails approximately 30yrs old. They were purchased in Arizona. We then moved to Ca.(where they were much happier). We are now back in Arizona. The summer heat here is just too intense for them. I always have had to provide lots of shade for they. We’d like for them to go to a better climate where they could be planted in the ground and allowed to grow. They are currently breaking out of the whiskey barrels they’re in. If you (love of plants) or anyone out there are interested in them, let us know. I’d be happy to send photos. Needless to say, they would need to be picked up here.
    Thanks

    Do you know why they grow such a large base? Does it have anything to do with water storage?

    • @Nhoj31neirbo47
      @Nhoj31neirbo47  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, the large base stores water. It is called a caudex. There are many species of plants that have a caudex. Most but not all are native to locales with annual seasonal drought. A caudiciform plant may have a swollen trunk, base or underground roots where it stores water. Ponytail Palms do well here in southern California as we have rainy winters and no rain from May through October, (summer).

      @@Nhoj31neirbo47 Thank you for the detailed and educative answer. I'm guessing botany is more than a hobby for you.

    • @Nhoj31neirbo47
      @Nhoj31neirbo47  3 роки тому

      I’m really not a botanist. I’m a lover of plants. I like plants for their own sake. Though I have learned some botany and horticultural science over the years, the scientific aspect of plants has a limited appeal to me. I try to relate to plants from my heart and perceive them as part and parcel of a greater whole. While I can understand the reasoning behind exploring the morphology , physiology , etc., of plants in ever increasing detail, down to the atomic level, I often loose interest in the describing and analyzing of the minutiae of flora beyond a certain point. I have worked in nurseries, greenhouses and interior and exterior landscaping in the past, off and on. I currently only have a few clients.

    I have two males (white flowers) they are 10 yrs. When leaves are trimmed they emit a odor that is reminiscent of thunder storms. The flowers are fragrance like jasmine. Has anyone else noticed similar qualities?
