What does a 54k neodymium humbucker sound like?

  • We now offer a production model 54k humbucker! www.alegree.co.uk/collections...
    What happens when we wind pickups to ridiculous levels and install stupidly strong magnets in them?
    When we stop asking 'why?' and start asking 'why not?', lunacy like this happens.

    this is ideal for some stoner and sludge stuff, really pushy and gnarly stuff! i imagine the signal to noise ratio on this is really good as well

    • @somepunkinthecomments471
      @somepunkinthecomments471 4 роки тому +1

      Having less winds actually increases the signal to noise ratio, as less wire means a smaller electromagnetic field around the coil, thus, a smaller amount of noise induced in the coil.

    • @Francisco17Berrios
      @Francisco17Berrios 3 роки тому +1

      @@somepunkinthecomments471 Less winds more S/N ratio??? WTF, where the Fuck did you learned that? It's backwards, that's why you always need to use for example in interfaces the gain knob all the way to almost clipping.

    • @somepunkinthecomments471
      @somepunkinthecomments471 3 роки тому +1

      @@Francisco17Berrios Do you know what a signal to noise ratio is? It's simple physics, the more windings, the more inductance, the more electromagnetic interface, aka, 60 cycle hum introduced into the signal path. The higher inductance produces a louder signal, but will hum more. Case in point, alumitone pickups, they have less noise than humbuckers, and they are low impedance.

    • @gregorwalton
      @gregorwalton 3 роки тому +3

      That's not "noise" but Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). As for random thermal noise (hiss) it is higher for higher resistances. However we talking about signal to noise, and the signal gets bigger faster than the thermal noise for higher windings. Also the stronger magnet should make the signal increase more than the induced EMI

    interesting test..but how would it sound if you put less wraps with a thicker gauge wire..in other words..the same output (due to the more powerful magnetic field), but a brighter sound from less coil resistance

    • @Alegree
      @Alegree  4 роки тому +3

      The output is a combination of both the number of winds and magnetic strength. Your suggestion would have a lower output.
      It would be extremely bright and shrill. Probably getting into the hi-fi territory with thick enough wire.

    • @mikkosutube
      @mikkosutube 4 роки тому +2

      @@Alegree By 'thicker guage' I meant thicker than the normal 42 or 43 guage. yes, it would have a lower output due to the lower maximum possible windings (compared to this, or other normal 42 gauge pickups) , but if the magnetic field with the neodym magnets is twice as strong as that of an alternative, then the output might still be more than with a 'standard' pickup. It should have a brighter sound that could be mellowed to taste with the tone control (and or capactor choice)..but still leaving the option of a very bright sound as needed..without having to actively boost the tone (along with any excess electromagnetic noise).

    • @Alegree
      @Alegree  4 роки тому +2

      I think you're probably taking the idea of a Filtertron there and pushing it a bit further - they have a huge alnico magnet with two very low wind 42 awg coils.

    • @donaldharris8826
      @donaldharris8826 3 роки тому +1

      I had a Peavey T60 that had a really GR8T Tone. I decided to do some tonal experimening. So, I bought a pair of really high output pups that were 30+ OHMs in neck position and 50+ OHMs in bridge position. A Ceramic Magnet Neck and a Alnico Magnet Bridge, both pickups were made by WD. The neck pickup was a 4 rail model, and the bridge pickup was a 6 rail model. I got perfect pitch. The pups pulled the guitar out of tune unplugged and was even worse when plugged in and powered up. The more the volume was turned up, the more the guitar went out of tune. You could literally see the differences on my Boss Tuner, and I surely could hear the tuning go out of intonation when plugged up. The guitar was just an experiment that never worked out. The guitar just sounded HORRIFIC, and was useless to use to try and play any genre of music, even if the guitar had stayed in tune ! ! ! So, I switched the pickups back out to P-Rails, and later on to DiMarzios because they were cheaper than Fishman Fluence pickups. I have 4 sets of Peavey T60 Pickups and their treble bleed phase switchable electronics. They are worth serious bucks ! ! ! As for myself, I am always experimenting and tweaking music gear in search of Tone . . . Peace & Play 🎸 On FretBro's & FretSis's . . . 👍🤘🎸😎🙏. DDH 11-9-2020.

      The dc resistance of pickups isn’t always a good indicator of how hot they are, but generally it’s pretty safe to say that once the resistance gets past about 20k, the pickup is already stupidly compressed. This pickup is 45k, so throwing a compressor in front of it would probably not be a great idea.
