When i retired we were going through boxes we hadn't opened in decades.
In one i found the Opinel #9 i bought when i was 10 in Branson MO.
Memories came flooding back of fishing, cleaning, and cooking. Good times.
My opinel no.8 oak was the first knife i ever bought for myself and I learned how to sharpen it on the bottom or a cermaic mug. I still have it and i still carry it from time to time despite the other "fancier" folders I have
We get funny looks when we sharpen on knives on coffee cups at Cracker Barrel lol
I’ve had a number eight for almost 35 years - love the carbone blade- it sharpens easily and has a wonderful patina. I agree everyone needs to own at least one.
🙌🙌🙌
Yep, me too. I did reshape the handle a tad but that's all and never needed anything else its always in my pocket
Noone should have one. Everybody MUST have an Opinel! ❤
My dad carried an opinel in his lunch box when I was a kid. He cut a lot of apples with that knife and I have a lot of fond memories of seeing him use it. I got a number 8 with olive wood handles for Christmas many years ago and just started to edc it last week. Perfect timing for this video and love they are still making their products in France. Thanks
One of the great things about Opinel is the memories passed down over the years
Iconic knive for more than a century...Top 100 best designs at the Moma ! My grandfather offered me one when I was a teenager...still have it, and daily use it !
A personal favorite of ours as well!
My Opinel story. Took the family to the North Georgia mountains on vacation. The boys couldn't find the latest whiz bang folder they wanted and after a long search headed back to the car. I saw the Opinel display and thought these were the coolest old school knives I'd ever seen.
The boys came back in and we all got one. They were just amazed with the mechanism.
An awesome design that has stood the test of time!
I wish they made a fixed blade with the same blade.
An Opinel fixed blade would be sweet!
Their paring knife is pretty much that.
If they made a fixed blade no.8-12 I would buy multiple and use them for hunting. I have used a no.8 as a bird and trout knife before and it’s perfect other than cleaning it is not easy.
Guess you guys have never been on there site😂
That would be pretty sweet I'd buy a few
My number 10 and number 10 corkscrew arrived today. I am going out right now and get a number 8 and the spook and fork kit! Now that the weather is warming up, I'll be looking forward to getting it out in the woods!
They make a great addition to any pack!
My Opinel number 8 I’ve had for over 20 years and has always held its sharpness to the point I’m sure I could shave with it. Awesome knives and I agree everyone should have an Opinel.
💯
I got two 8s and two 5s this year. One each in stainless and carbon. None of them arrived shaving sharp, but they were decently sharp. I could some of the edge was done sloppily though on portions of the blade.
No 6 is my favorite, holds an edge , simple but classy.
Great EDC size
I probably have 60 some odd knives, and I rotate weekly and sometimes daily, but by far my most used knife is the Opinel No. 6 HA! MY cheese knife, fruit knife everything knife:) I have the No. 8 no doubt but I love that little number 6 ya'll:) HA!
We really dig the 6 and 8
The No. 6 is often under-rated. I keep my Dad’s in my vest pocket and it’s wonderful. It’s about 50 years old and has a lovely patina.
I have carried the same exact opinel #7 for almost 40 years. Daily !
No. 7 really is lucky for you 👍
I actually stopped a jail break with that #7 once. It was on a visitation day and several inmates rushed one of the visitation hall doors. I threw that knife and buried it into a door frame right in front of the lead man. It so shocked them all that they backed up down the hall into the cell block. I never said a word, just retrieved my knife , put it into my pocket and signed in the next visitor. The Sheriff never chewed me out so apparently, no one ever told anybody about it. The #7 actually throws pretty good with a little practice.
👍🏼knock knock. Who’s there? Opinel since 1890!😄
Same family owned company. Who else has done that? Love opinel for all the reasons.
I customized one for my dad, my wife, my daughter and myself. My no9 has drop point thumb stud and pocket clip. My no7; I chopped down to a little carving knife.
I think Joseph opinels dad did not like his pocket knife. Didn’t want him to make it. 😆
We love seeing how crafty the knife community can get and the Opinel gives them so many different things to work with 👍
Personally I like the 9 as well, fits better in my hand
@@sosteve9113 👍🏼yep. And the bigger ones have more material to customize.
@@andrewfett142 also true,I did a few
@@sosteve9113 👍🏼:)
i carry and use the #7 seems to fit better in my pocket, but more people need to try these knives. i think most folks shy away do to its low price, but they preform so much better than the cost indicates.
The #7 is awesome!
Just out of curiosity, how exactly would you use the plug-in fork and the knife blade at the same time to cut your food on a plate???
Many people have two knives. Maybe a different size and material, stainless or carbon for different tasks.
@@johnrhodes3350 Sure, but then you could just carry a fork with you.
I love Opinel. I bought my No. 8 while on a trip to France a long time ago. I recently accidentally cut my finger with it and it have me 3 stitches😅
Buying it great memory and memento of the trip, the stitches not so much lol
@@SMKWcom indeed!
I’ve got a bandaid on my thumb and pinky right now
Thumb from oiling a Moritaka kiritsuke (was in a rush) and the pinky from a Civivi Element sheepsfoot in my pocket. It had opened and I sliced on it.
One of us!!
I bought one of those number 8 knifes when I did a cycling holiday in France eight years ago have carried it every day since .
The mushroom knife is my prized opinel. I also like my camping utensil knife. I have customized many of the traditional and I love all of them. You can put a hair popping sharp edge on them.
Takes a great edge, works all day, and doesn't break the bank!
I need an Opinel saw.
Yes you do. If you're interested in buying one I know a guy who knows a guy that will sell you one
They are sweet!
@@Last_Chance. This was the best reply ever.
@@jeremynedrow7003 thanks. Have an awesome day brother!
Gotta love them Opinels...awesome 😊
I own a #6 which is the smallest they make with the lock ring. I drilled a hole in the handle for a small loop lanyard. The coolest one is the tiny key ring one for $13. Great reviews! Cheers.
Sweet!
I actually have visited the Museum twice on my way back and thorth from France and Italy in the Alps for work. Amazing place and history, I have No3, No6 and a No10 and a carbon steel No6
Nice collection!
Can i get a replacement v- lock ferrule from Opinel to replace one which cracked and fell apart on my knife? I am in the UK
Nice review, i have no 6-12, inox and carbone, the oyster, the garden, and the saw all are superb. I used to dismiss them and bought what i thought were better knives but i eventually purchased one and wow was i surprised, i use them all the time now, so versatile, so light and sharp. I can see great uses for that little one especially for leatherwork. Thanks, stay safe from UK

I have the 8, 9, and 10. The 8 is my stainless version for veggies and such. Although for my hand i need one in a 9 as it fits my hand perfect. GOD BLESS the Opinel
ive always used mineral oil on the pivot and collar on my Opinels to help break em in quicker and to prevent rust on the cs models
Mineral is a great choice
Great new products and great history lesson.
Thanks for watching T!
Nice work, good review, please keep up the good work man 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you!
These are classic but may I suggest looking at the Svord Peasants knife
FYI my removable flashlight clips fit perfectly on my opinel 8 and 10
I love my opinel n°8 Chaperon ! Amazing
Love a No 8!
I have several Opinel from no 6 7 8 and 9 best value on the market and so sharp, I never intended to have so many talk about a rabbit hole. lol
They are always a great addition and never breaks the bank
Best cheap EDC pocket knife in the world. I've had one in my pocket for 50 years now, bought my first when I was eight. Shaving sharp and so cheap it doesn't matter if you lose it, which means, of course, that I still have every one I've owned. Ever noticed that you only lose the expensive ones?
Affordability and useability all in one package!
I’ve seen the fork and spoon recently. Didn’t know they work with the #8, so off to get them. The picnic set looks very appealing and would make a perfect gift.
Makes a great set to keep in the car/lunch box as well 👍
@@SMKWcom Yep. Currently using it for lunches at work
I want to add this brand back to my collection.
You can't go wrong with a Opinel
Dear Opinel: I love your knives. I have a few and I carry my #8 every day. Pleas release some of your premium wood models with a high carbon blade. I prefer it to stainless and would buy three or four if I could find them with a high carbon blade.
Thanks- Kyle
Thanks for watching Kyle!
Nice😁 I own expensive quality knives but i like that picknick set a lot.
We are loving the picnic set!
Those are great knives! Always great prices!!!
Thanks for watching Mike!
I’ve had so many knives in my hands. Opinel is definitely one of the best, pound for pound, There’s just nothing better in my opinion. Joker Kinves are a very close 2nd for me. Love these 2 brands
Opinel is a classy and classic carry any day of the week 👍
Thanks MaryLynn and TC for bringing us these great Opinels! Just ordered the picnic + and a carbon #8.
Thanks for watching and we hope you enjoy them!
I have the #12 knife and saw, I might have to get the serrated blade. I like the spoon and fork setup also. ✌️
Sounds like you have a good Opinel collection going there
Great job on the video 👍
Thanks for watching Nathan!
Personally I like the 9 as well, fits better in my hand.
It is a great thing we have so many awesome Opinel sizes to choose from
GREAT video! Thanks!
Thanks for watching and glad you liked it!
I am french and happy to see America loves Opinel.
By the way, we love Zippo ;)
I love my Opinels. Made a video years ago about the Savoyan knock to open your Opinel. Fun fact. Nontron knives are from the same country but much older. Talking about history.
Great show as always
Thanks for watching Joey!
@14:45 the '40s has a taller blade. I really like that
Allways gotta keep an for the out for the classics
I own no8 and really like it, but recently got me Antonini Old Bear classic L and boy oh boy what a blade....the mechanism is insane, grip, looks...top notch.
Loving it already after only a week lol
Sorry Opinel... you've been dethroned 😅 since this is practically the same design or at least similar enough
thanks for watching
the best french trad knives opinel douk douk and laguiole! and the oldest nontron since 1775
Now I want one thanks ❤
Always a good one to have in the collection
Tc, could you use the spoon and fork at Stampede to eat the dinner with or do they have a no knife rule.
We are not telling you what to do but we have found tipping generously allows you get away with a lot
Thanks
Thanks for watching Joe!
By far the best inox Steel knife I ever bought was an Opinel. The SECRET is that Opinel USES SWEDISH SANDRIVAK INOX STEEL .
We really like INOX
I'm in the UK the opinel knife worth biying is hi carbon I've had loads over the past .it's got to be hi carbon steel.dont wast your time on stainless blunt blunt all the time.the old high carbon just oil it or gun blue it
Opinel also sells a really, really big one (and rhen I mean big!). Might be a help when treathened by ghosts!
Have several. I to wish for a fixed blade version
Hello, what a shame the man on your left had nothing to say. I like the near razor grind on the blade and they're light, really light. I have a number 08 gardeners model and it only weighs 1.3 ounces (37 grams) I have a same sized lock knife and it weighs 5.5 ounces (158 grams) Best to keep the Opinel dry though.
Best regards. 🙃
I prefer his great brothers, number 9 and 10. But number 8 is the top of buy, why ? Really good whit pic-nic set ! Compact and funny ! Hi from France.
The 8 is great size without being to big or to small. Hits a lot of peoples hands just right
for the datation the stamp on the handle and the stamp on the blade has different
Does opinel have warranty on their products?
Direct from their website, "Opinel products come with a lifetime warranty and are exchanged in case of defects in materials and workmanship. Damages due to normal wear and tear, improper use, dismantling or other alteration, are not covered by the Manufacturers Limited Lifetime Warranty."
www.opinel-usa.com/pages/opinel-usa-warranty-returns-refunds#:~:text=Opinel%20products%20come%20with%20a,the%20Manufacturers%20Limited%20Lifetime%20Warranty.
I really wanted to love the Opinel knife that I have (No.7 inox). But - it felt cheap and the blade edge was poor - with some of it rolled. i have to sharpen it to use it. I was disapointed.....
Opinothankyou
We see what you did there
They should make takedown models to swap the pins and locking collars more convenient.
Nifty.
Kind of a weird idea for Opinel, but also VERY Opinel; What if y'all made a hatchet/hand axe that unfolded into a full length axe? It would take some beefing up, but I'd bet a LOT of $ on it selling.
An Opinel Ax... we would like to see that
Great Grandpa knives.
💯
I had once. No locking ring then. Closed on my hand. Threw it away.
The woods on my knives are not living organisms.
thanks for watching
the virobloc has been on Opinel since 1955 , and knocked de opinel butt is named "the savoyard's blow"
Your Correct about that
I can peel with my #8. Can I cut wood with the peeler?
I do appreciate opinel but come on
I would buy the fork and spoon all day long
I discovered these when i moved to France. At first sight i wasn't impressed. Then I bought one !
A great edc, its not threatening, comes in nice colours, VERY sharp.
AND in France there are knife carry laws (joys of diversity) ...but being France traditional knives, widely carried by Frenchmen, are excluded from the laws. 😂
PS buy a Laguiole knife...a real one....esp if you are Christian !
Also, why is the cutting board not from France, instead of Italy!?
Opinel really needs to make there knives with a thicker stock and especially with a thicker tip. There tips a thinner than a piece of paper.
Seems like on the bottle opener, the bottle cap would crush the wood immediately,
To opinel you need to make a Bushcraft knife that can do all the things you need for busjcraft
Salut, if you got the number one or 11, keep them preciuously.😂
Thanks for watching!
Yo who's the babe 😍
That is our Opinel rep Mary Lynn and she is awesome...or did you mean TC?
Phuquing genius. Genius
Thanks for watching!
Let’s see Opinel step-up their game and make an All-Metal version because we all know where the weak spot is, common it’s wood!
They already make a plastic one.
Wood is far better anyway.
Keep metal and titanium outside of Opinel.
You can get those blades razor sharp
💯
👍
🙌🙌🙌
Sure if you want a knife with OK steel that is a pain in the ass to open and close
Pass, I'd rather have anything from Mora.
Mora is one of our go to fixed blades
What about SAK?
@@sosteve9113 I have quite a few.
I question the hosts being a true knife guy. He has all the hair on his arm and knuckles still.
Bald legs...
You didn't even mention how sharp they are, how long they keep their edge and how easy to sharpen, which you don't have to do very often.
Thanks for reminding us!
Jimmy Kimmel! Did not He worked with SMKW
i was the first like BTW ;)
thanks for watching
Nice cheap knife but be careful of the tip , bends easily.
I am sorry, but wood is not a living organism at all it is the byproduct of a tree that only helps to stabilize it more and more as it grows only the root system and leaves to fruit is alive! I am a retired carpenter and master woodeorker!
Doh. Less wine shakes and more product demo! Big fail.
🤔 no thank you
thanks for watching
Just my opinion, it is awful. I've seen it 100 times. I wouldn't carry that ever. That is just my opinion.
Sales girl kinda lost the plot. (You had one job to do.)
I can't hear what the hell she´s saying.
Thanks you for letting us know and we will be sure to boost the sound next time
@@SMKWcomJust a quick audio edit, love from Costa Rica!
The American habit of wearing baseball caps indoors is in my opinion misguided. We can't see your face which for humans is an import way to convey expression and no verbal information. Opinel knifes are excellent I have a #12 and an #8
In my experience those knives are pure junk. The blades are brittle and snap easily, the ring lock is slippery when wet and increases risk of injury and the handle is also slippery as hell when it's wet and is dangerous to user.
I must have over 20 of these. My favourite? The #6 in Walnut/Inox, imo the best ultralight hiking knife you can buy at any price, giving proper all-round 3" blade cutting ability at just under 1 ounce. The backspine will raise an awesome spark from a ferro rod (including when the knife is closed!) and is just the right profile for scaling a fish too. Not a 'supersteel' for sure, but takes a screaming good edge and very easy to sharpen in the field. The walnut wood swells less than the standard beech wood when wet, and the Inox is more corrosion resistant than the Carbone.
That is an awesome collection! Thanks for watching and sharing 👍
The #8 is whats in the middle consol in my truck , a useful knife that wont hurt the pocketbook if stolen or lost.
Makes a great truck knife!
What’s the point of a peeler when you have a knife? Just peel whatever you need to peel with your knife.
I've got a nr. 13 which has a 1 foot blade!
The 13's are huge!
Opinel the best ....after Nontron and Laguiole 😏😊😊
Thanks for watching and all of them make awesome blades
