    The Mechanika Max was my introduction to prosumer level highend Espresso.
    Pros:
    • Such a handsome design and well built well finished machine that will hopefully live on my counter for years.
    •plumbable: it is soooo nice to just install a filter and forget about water (specially for timer / Schedule on&off)
    • It’s so Quite compared to vibratory pump machines.. that alone is worth the upgrade.
    • Once heated and running, this machine can make your work flow so easy. I had a few friends the other day and I made 10 different drinks back to back within 15 min
    Cons:
    •Takes long to warm up (30 min) which is probably due to the large 1.9 L boiler. So scheduling your coffee is important. I recommend the Wifi controllable plugs (much easier to use and usable than built in schedule in the machine itself)
    • Water tank god no Cover ??? What???? Lol why?
    • portafilter basket included takes only 15g not 18g
    •Steaming wand is not as flexible for angle positions and can take long to get used to (since it’s really fast so Using lower pressure setting is recommended.. still figuring it out)
    Overall for the price I thunk you get such a great machine. I love it

      Hi WISE, I don't have a Max open in front of me at the moment but a good bet it's indication of static relay sending power to the boiler's heating element. When machine is fully up to temp it will cycle on/off every few seconds or so.

    After being on BTC Mode you’re not going to want to go back to just HX mode. I’ve been using this machine for almost a month on BTC Mode. Now I came from another Heat exchanger without any of this. Although with that machine I really didn’t flush much. Once I turned off BTC mode - man I hade to flush it says ready which is for excellent operation but man I’m lazy now. BTC mode got me lazy. You don’t have to do anything but kick up the steam at the end of the pull. 🎉

      Hey Matt, a definite consideration. Synchronika and Pro 700 are essentially identical to each other internally with same specs and capabilities. The Mechanika Max is less $$ and has similar brew temp stability in lower volume usage. All three can be purchased with flow control - currently a free upgrade. Some user will appreciate additional features built into the Max like programmable on/off times and programmable active and passive pre-infusion. The 700 and Synchronika have class leading steam power at 2 bar that's always available while the Mechanika Max's high end is about 1.5 bar in normal HX mode. Hope that helps!

    I keep coming back to this video, I have had my barista express for 11 years now and ready to upgrade to a decent HX machine, do you think this is the best heat exchanger machine at the moment that will last me 11+ more years? I have been looking at the new rocket apartamento also.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  11 місяців тому +1

      Hi b, thanks for the question. If you kept a Barista Express running for 11 years you'll have no problem getting 11 years out of the Max. It's a higher level build quality! "Best" means different things to different people. I can say the Max is at the top of capabilities in HX machines with a deep feature set, dual PID and operation modes, plumbability, active and passive pre-infusion, flush alert and time of day on/off. It's a deep feature set that takes a little programming effort to get full advantage.
      I've been working with the new Appartamento TCA for about a month now. It's a much simpler machine with 4 basic PID controlled temperature settings. It's a good option for those who want things easy and are not interested in going high-end hobby level into crafting espresso extractions. Set it to the medium temp for dark roast and high for light roast and that's about it.

    One thing that does strike me in this machine is that it has the same issue as my Technika (& other machines) and that is the steam pipe is directly above a mains switch and LED.
    My steam pipe developed a slow drip at the join with the steam valve. Water dripped onto the power LED and caused it to short out. It was a cheap fix - about a dollar for a new LED and resistor, but water on mains power does not thrill me.
    They have a shield over the electronics - extending that shield over the power switch and LED to direct water away would be good.

    Great video Mark. Machines are getting better but such tiny baby steps with these electronic controls when iPads have been out for years. The processing power and memory required to do anything you could ever want these machines to do is so tiny, it would fit in a box smaller than a watch yet these companies just won't invest in a good touch screen control. Two buttons and a tiny screen? That was the update to the PID unit? Wow. What about just a wifi antenna inside and put out an app that sets all the temps, pre-infusion-brew time, everything! So slow to update. Very frustrating for such expensive units.

      @@TomJones-tx7pb Well put! These machines are great quality and design but the mind set with the management is so restricted that they refuse to innovate. There is nothing worse than putting a new air conditioning in your home and being told by the company that you must use their touch screen thermostat and then it won't even register your finger touches after it's installed. Total trash because the company refuses to do it right. The Rocket R Nine One has a great touch screen but reviews still state that you must "press the screen hard" to get it to register your touches... on a $6500.00 machine! You could buy the bottom line iPad and just bolt it to the front and get a better screen than the Rocket R Nine One. Just find the best touch screen technology and do it right. Not this system of choose bcT, BC1, BC2, BC3 by having to do specific single button push sequences... all this should be displayed simultaneously on a touch screen display so you can see what is currently set and just push the other one when you need it instead of this idiotic menu system on a half inch display. It's 2023 for Christmas sakes! Even Rocket missed the mark with only five total menu settings for profile saving and you still can't store the pull you just did anywhere other than the star location, which then can't be permanently stored in one of only five memory slots. Really? Only five? I have over 25,000 photos on my damn iPhone and they can't store more than five pulls in memory and "no, you can't save what you just did to a permanent memory slot, it can only be saved to the star location and then that will get erased next time you want to store what you just pulled." It's like a two year old programmed these things! Get a teenager who understands programming to do this for your companies. Logical mind who understands memory, RAM, touch screen technology and responsiveness, waterproof needs and do it right! Come on ECM... Rocket... everyone else in the espresso industry!

A good clue that you are doing rubber band engineering is when you cannot explain on the display what the settings are for, or even why you need them in the first place. I used to send engineers back to the drawing board when they came up with solutions that required the user to do settings instead of figuring out how to make it "just work".

If you can't put full proper words for the setting on a display, you're display might be too small. • @Wholelattelovepage

      Hi g, thanks for the question. No, the Mechanika Max does not have the Fast Heat Mode. Fast heat is only offered in select dual boiler and single boiler (SBDU) machines from ECM and Profitec. The Max uses a heat-exchange boiler. By design HX boiler machines heat to well beyond the desired brew temperature in the steam producing section of the boiler. That section of the boiler transfers heat to the isolated tube within the boiler which provides the brew water and thermosiphon flow to the E61 group. Hope that helps!

    Question with the stainless steel boiler do we descale as usual or is their a special descale for stainless steel. ? Thanks one more think can I have flush advisor on in BTS mode?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  11 місяців тому

      Hi Mayb, The chemists at Urnex (manufacturer of most commonly used descaling products) advise any descaler can be used in stainless steel boilers. But, be aware machine manufactures recommend end users do not descale machines with heat exchange or dual boilers. The main reason is it's difficult to complete fill a steam boiler with descaling solution due to the head space in the boiler left to contain the steam. Also makes it difficult to complete rinse the boiler of descaler. Best course is to prevent scale in the first place by softening the water (reducing calcium). Filter options from BWT exchange calcium in water with magnesium leaving a mineral level needed for flavor and corrosion protection without risk of scale formation.
      Options for reservoir fed machines:
      BWT Aqualizer: www.wholelattelove.com/products/bwt-aqualizer-2-6-l-pitcher-with-illuminated-baselight

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  Рік тому

      Hey r, They will be fairly similar depending on how you have the Max set. If you run the Max in brew temperature control mode you'll have to tell the machine you want to bring the boiler up to steaming temperature during an extraction - it gets there fairly quickly. If you run in normal HX mode then steam is always available and you can turn the boiler temp up a bit for more steam. That increases the brew temp so you'll likely need to flush the group prior to the extraction - but the Max's Flush Advisor will let you know when needed and for how long.

    My household is having a “which espresso machine to upgrade to” showdown, and we’ve come down to the final two… this one (my choice) and the bezzera matrix (my husbands choice). We’re looking for the programmability that both of these machines offer, and when we get into the custom upgrades I want with ECM (walnut accents and bottomless portafilter) the difference in cost isn’t that significant. That being said, I am the person who maintains our current machine, and I am terrified of dual boilers and the idea that you should not descale them personally, but take them in to be serviced. We will be using either a BWT penguin filter or distilled water to add third wave water to, so I know in theory scale should be at a minimum, but it seems like everything I read says they should still be descaled on a semi regular basis. If that’s the case I would think that would add an extra cost and downtime for that machine that would knock a dual boiler out of contention.
    Or am I mistaken and if you use the proper water descaling isn’t really an issue?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  Рік тому +1

      Hi km, If you use the BWT Penguin filter as directed scale will not form in the machine. Some 3rd wave formulations may result in scale. If you go with a plumbable machine you could use a BWT Bestmax premium in-line filter to eliminate scale potential: www.wholelattelove.com/products/bwt-bestmax-premium-filter-package-w-besthead-flex

So ready to pull another shot at set brew temp in that time frame. If you do not, then temperature overshoots and re-stabilizes in the 5 to 8 minute time frame. The graph does not refer to heating after the steam bump.

      Hi Dan, Thanks for the question. Yes they are all good! I recently posted this video on the Profitec Drive: ua-cam.com/video/ouG30LITDy4/v-deo.html
      The Drive and Synchronika are dual boiler machines while the Max is an advanced heat-exchange boiler with dual PID to overcome some of the limitations of HX boilers in relation to prioritizing brew temp accuracy against steam pressure. Internally, the Drive (based off the Profitec Pro 700) and Synchronika are nearly identical. The Drive has a new OLED screened control system that offers features not found on the Synchronika like Fast Heating, on/off by time of day, programmable active and passive pre-infusion and more. If you're a newbie there will be a bit of a learning curve but if you're committed it's a much more powerful machine with the additional features. Max uses a commercial grade rotary pump and is plumbable direct to waterline if desired. Slim uses a vibration pump and is not plumbable. Understand much of the 146ppm after BWT treatment is reading from the magnesium that replaced the calcium. mg does not cause scale and the calcium has been reduced enough that it will not either.

      I thought the same thing. I’m not saying these two are identical in their offerings but MaraX definitely offered a “solution” years back to the typical HX issues and need for flushing. MaraX was the first one to introduce brew priority mode overriding the need for a cooling flush. Anyway I feel like some may argue that ECM offers superior reliability or quality build 🤷🏻‍♂️ but I’m almost sure that Lelit was the first one to innovate on this regard. Even though MaraX has two internal PIDs and brew temperature settings some may prefer to have an actual PID controller. I’d argue that most won’t be able to tell a difference in the cup by going up or down one degree.

      @Wholelattelovepage  Рік тому +2

      Hi, @Carlos Vargas and @Peter thanks for the commentary. Lelit may have been first with a solution but the Mechanika Max takes it to another level. A key advantage is always knowing exactly what the temperature is in the thermosiphon loop. In brew temp control mode the display shows it. Running in standard HX mode the flush advisor uses your t1 temp setting to alert when a flush is needed, when the flush has you at your set temp or when you're under set temperature. There's no guessing where you are on the Max. I agree some users wouldn't know the difference in a couple of degrees of brew temp but some will. And, with no way of knowing what the temps are the difference could be much greater. Additional features like rotary pump, programmable active and passive pre-infusion allow for repeatable profiles and pre-infusion whether your running from the reservoir or the plumbed connection. Shot timer, programmable on/off times, cleaning and filter reminders, easy access to E11 offset adjustments and yes, the build quality and cleaner internal design add to the package. The Max is a more expensive machine so not surprising it has more going on.

If working with a single coffee one may find they prefer its flavor at a particular yield but it's hard to compare different coffees using extraction yields. The yield doesn't correlate in a general way to flavor. Baskets do make a difference. Flow rates and shape differ between baskets leading to changes in grind size and flow through the puck which change flavor.

      @Wholelattelovepage  Рік тому +4

      Hey Lise, Welcome back!
      1. To pull the drip tray it's a tiny tilt up and then it slides right off.
      2. With BTC (brew temp mode) on you'd hit the down button while pulling your shot so the boiler starts heating for steaming. In a few seconds the boiler will pass 1.2 bar and you can start steaming. The boiler will continue to heat for 3 minutes then automatically return to BTC. If your milk drinks are single shots split a double shot into 2 cups, hit the down button while extracting and you'll have plenty of steam/time to froth for both. If using double shots for the 2 drinks when your pulling the second double hit the down button and you will have plenty of steam for 3 minutes.
      If pumping out the milk drinks you'd be better off running in standard HX mode and using the flush advisor in between extractions. In standard HX mode you always have full steam power available.
      3. In standard HX mode steaming 5oz/150ml it's probably ~20 seconds to reach 140F/60C in the pitcher. That can vary a +/- a few seconds based on starting milk temp and your t2 (boiler temperature) setting
      4. At first glance there's a lot of control available with the 2 buttons and it may seem complicated. But it's very easy to use and quickly becomes second nature. And, one of the few machines of its type with programmable on/off times - that's gonna help with the grumpy before coffee crowd. It can be all heated up and ready to go for you😜.
      Hope that helps!

      True they are the first to have a deep design for this a lot of electronics on this machine and it works well. The rotary pump is smaller so it has to wind up faster you get a slight whine but it’s still quieter than a vib pump

      Hi dcds, Thanks for the kind comment. Technika Profi is an excellent, beautiful machine! The functions add to ease of use and capabilities. With the smart HX one can produce consistent brew temps without flushing and crank up the steam power when needed. Run the Max in standard HX mode and the flush advisor removes brew temp guesswork. Time programmable automatic active and passive pre-infusion help with extraction consistency and quality. Programmable on/off times are rare in classic style semi-automatic machines.

      We are enjoying our new coffee experience with a 100% Canephora (Robusta) from the African rain forrest in Guinea.
      They have the interesting approach to treat and process their Canephora as carefully as you would normally do that with Arabica coffee.
      So, they have installed the very first coffee-washing-machine in their region of the world ;-)
      The coffee is incredibly smooth, has a great texture and it seems that it is conserving the “whole warmth of entire Africa” in it…
      I am just wondering how such a great coffee from Macenta Beans would come out with the pre-infusion this _ECM Mechanika Max_ is offering…

    I find it really surprising these Italian companies are still trying to catch up to the BDB. For the prices they ask for, they should be able to do alot better. I'm glad the Bianca kind of gave these companies a kick in the butt, but they're still well behind the curve.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  Рік тому +2

      Hi Drift, Thanks for the comment. BDB is in the appliance category. Breville/Sage offered as a less costly alternative to the hand made machines out of Europe. BDB has lots of plastic and proprietary components. Not exactly user serviceable. Lelit makes machine grade alternatives but it's fair to say finishing quality like casework and fasteners is a little below that of manufacturers like ECM.

      Hi HoYS, Like other HX boiler machines you can change the boiler temp to reduce or increase general steaming power. Most higher-end machines have gone to spring assisted valves which go from closed to fully open in about a 1/4 turn. It's a more reliable design.

    Flush adviser seems great, but having to interpret a 3 digit symbol code is really unacceptable in this day and age. It was ok in the 80s on my old alarm clock 😂. All kidding aside, perhaps WLL can begin push these manufacturers to modernize their user interfaces. Even the Lelit Bianca display would be an upgrade.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  Рік тому +1

      Hi Net, I hear you on the display. There's this weirdness with putting digital displays on the face of classically styled espresso machines. Up until a few years ago Rocket Espresso wouldn't even consider a digital display on the face of their machines. Their feeling was it ruined the aesthetic. They finally came around when they added shot timers to the face of machines in their Chronometro line. But they still hide temp controls behind the drip tray or in removable displays on their Cinquantotto. Bezzera does have machines like the Matrix and Duo with a robust touchscreen display on the face of the machine.
