Becoming an electrician via the City and Guilds 2365 diploma route? This is Aidan's experience

  • These videos are produced to help enable people looking to join the electrical, have a clearer picture of what that journey may look like. For example the course length, the cost, getting a job at the other end, on going training, and what avenues are open to you once you complete the course.
Aiden reached out to me to discuss his route into the industry via the City and Guild 2365 levels 2 and 3, which were both 12 months long two evenings a week.
Like many others, Aiden felt that the school pushed him down the academic route because he had good grades, when they should have paid more attention to what he was spending his pocket money on. As such, he ended up in a career for 20 years which wasn't really want he wanted to be doing, so he looked at learning a trade.
Why do schools put the pressure onto academic individuals to go down the university route, and the non academic are told to learn a trade.
A level 4 maths and English is required to complete the City and Guilds 5357 electrical apprenticeship, and if you don't have it when you start, you need to complete functional skills and be at that level before you qualify. Yet the City and Guilds 2365, which follows the same qualification structure, does not have any entry requirements.
I wonder how many people are told that, and why that is?
    Anyway, here is Aiden's experience.

Aidan and Adrian, thank you so much for making this video, it has been more helpful to me than I can explain in a YT comment, but I have felt my blood surge in recognition of many of the things you talk about regarding the 'training industry,' especially for elderlies like myself.
I have been watching Adrian's videos for a good while- you taught me how to carefully lift a client's carpet, floorboards, and understand domestic structures in the second one i saw.
The first was when you found out that you weren't 'qualified,' when you're lightyears beyond a bs7671 'competent person.'
    What a f'king labyrinth.
I've seen another couple of episodes of this series and will watch the rest.
Just wanted to thank you both for this video, it means a lot to me and I'm sure it does to others too.
    Thank you.

Thank you so much for getting in touch and expressing your gratitude. It’s the whole reason why I started talking about people’s experiences into the electrical industry, as there as so many variants.
The problem is that there are so many hurdles to jump over and obstacles to avoid, it’s just so difficult to navigate the minefield and people easily get caught out.
Hence, the videos on peoples experiences.

Wish I saw this video last year. I'm 39 now did shit at school my maths is shocking. But I got a job onsite as a electrical labourer and the qualified sparks said I picked things up fast but because I've got no gcse's the college wouldn't enrol me. So I've paid for a course myself doing 2 weekends a month. I've done level 2 and got through the 18th now on level 3. I'm am drained of trying to figure out these formulas and calculations if I knew it was going to be this difficult I would have just carried on paint spraying but I'm now committed to it. I don't just want to get through it I want to understand and know what I'm doing for obvious reasons but just feel like the course is chucking mock after mock exams at me to get through to the next bit. Like you said tho nothing is wasted I've learn a tonne of maths some of which I've never even heard of but quite enjoy figuring stuff out. Hopefully it all ends well.

Aidan. Thank you so much for your honest and open journey and experience. I relate in a lot of ways; fairly academic at school, pushed into A Levels which I hated and wasted (grades suffered a lot as well as time lost). Spent the last 10 years doing jobs that have been okay, but just earning to pay the bills. Hoping to start the C&G Level 2 at Brighton MET this September on the self funded route. You addressed a good point re longer term jobs. I always thought I'd have to do my L2 and L3, then sign up to an agency for the Portfolio element. I was going to try networking and building contacts in a sense but will definitely give that more focus following your story. Take care and hope things work out for you!

Am back doing my level 2 wishing to do level 3 but it is out of my area. Going for my 18th edition after buying the new books. Going to do o line mock exam an finding the information in the books. Get it in my head what falls under what regulation and were it is. I did first learn about electrics age 14 from a reders digest book. Down the back had house wiring loop in loop out for lighting and sockets an socket spurs. But in school I was stuck in the remedial class as I found reading and writing hard. Was not allowed to do anything in school. So I did bunk off and goto the library reading diagrams on TV sets. Worked in TV shop then leaving school did all I could to do electronics. No class for are group I was told not enough of us so I got more in then we'll there is no spair room found a room no one then to teach. What it was they needed more in mechanics I gave it a go. The college got funding to take lads in that was always in trouble. They messed about so not much learning. Left moved to a YTS best move I made the guy teaching did it all as a job. Worked for the education as IT tech. But when my old teachers saw me there things were made hard. As they could not have it known that a remedial was there. In college I have had students sent to me to show them how to do stuff am a student. There has never been a talk saying you need this then this then this to be called a qualified electrician and to do your own work. So my thinking is just how meany incompetent guys are out there with NICEIC logos o there van

I was told that the domestic installer course was always more designed for those that need electrics as a side trade to go with for example kitchen fitting. What I've found is the main issue being the way they sell these courses, they promise you all these things but say it in a way where they are not actually lying about it, but not actually telling you the whole story, and what else you require to move forward. Which was one of his points in the video.

    • @Pure_electrical_training

    • @Pure_electrical_training
      @Pure_electrical_training  3 роки тому

I’ve seen lots of training like that and you have to question the speed of it all.
I’m currently doing some research now on how people learn, and how we commit things to long term memory and I’m going to produce a video on it at some point.
From what I am reading, the problem with fast, intense training is that you commit a lot to your short term memory, not your long term memory, so you learn enough to get through the exams, but a lot gets forgotten.
My advice is always go for the longer term training over years, rather than months and you stand a better chance of coming out the other end with a better understanding.
Those routes may also be paid for by the funding agency

    • @Pure_electrical_training
      @Pure_electrical_training  8 місяців тому

If you are currently studying the 8202 and working with an electrician, why not get put on an apprenticeship?
You can RPL the units over and all your training will be paid for by the government, including your AM2 and NVQ, which you won’t get on the 8202.
If you stay on the 8202, you will then have to complete the NVQ at a cost of 1500-2k, and the AM2 around £900 before you will be classed as qualified.
Once you do that, I would take the CG 2931 inspection and testing qualification, and the level 4 CG 2396 design course, which will separate you from the competition.

Adrian, Please stop implying that you have to be a member of a CPS scheem. I am an elderly person who is taking an online
four year course to become a domestic and light commercial spark. I can't because of recent legislation join a CPS Scheem
but I'm working towards this. Also not every Electrician chooses to join a CPS scheem, after all it does not mean that you are
incompetent as a spark, all it means is that you have the right to use a logo that says you are, but in reality how do the CPS scheem
know this. Just because you get assesed once every year does not mean that you are a good and competent Electrician, all it
means is that you have satisfied someones expectations of you as a spark.

I think you misunderstand me, as I would prefer that people were not a member of a competent person scheme as they are currently not fit for purpose.
I guess, I’m only talking about my experience within a domestic environment and the hoops you have to jump through.

I am sorry but if you apply for skilled persons course and you can't read and write then maybe you are applying for the wrong course. I don't think not asking for this basic skill is a flaw cause if school let you out without these than its a failure of educational system.

The education system let me down massively my whole life.
I left school without any GCSE’s and bumbled around for years. I started this career and through my own determination, have pushed myself to be the best that I can be.
You can’t teach that in school and you either have it, or you don’t.
Personally, I would rather take someone on who has desire and enthusiasm to be the best, rather than bits of paper.
You can’t teach attitude, but you can everything else.
      Just a thought
