See, the thing is, i feel like the show doesnt acknowledge how the need for most monsters in the show to be played as humans makes monsters in this world overtly human When we say "humans are worse than monsters", i don't think that hits as hard because half of the monsters were human before gaining powers, and the other half have humanistic traits. The only difference are gained traits like hunger and powers. They're basically human+. Ofc Dean is gonna be comparable to them because it doesn’t take much to reach that level.
I really liked Benny but he was happier in purgatory than the real world. But to ask Dean to send him back was a lot to ask. Dean tried to talk him out of it. Benny could have died by anyone. But I believe he wanted the only true friend that he ever had to do it out of love i think. Dean was Benny's only real friend that wasn't a vampire.
I love the make-up work on the monster he interrogates. It's been quite a while since we've seen something like that, that actually looks like a monster/human (that isn't cgi). It actually reminds me of how Fenrir Greyback looked in the Harry Potter movies.

With Cas turning his powers all the way down, so as to not attract Leviathans, assumedly his Earth body experiences Earth time. Dean though, much like the other monsters probably exists in a type of spirit capacity. Because assumedly monsters like Benny have no humans to eat. And don't need to eat. Otherwise he'd probably feel compelled to eat Dean. And Dean would be the one hunted by almost every one and thing in the dimension.
Season 7 was kinda the pits, entertaining enough but other than that not terribly good I thought.... but you are right, season 8 was definitely worth waiting for. It is a vast improvement.... much of it was on par with some of the best seasons in my opinion.

Makes sense. Eventually he got got in the real world and ended up in Purgatory. From the show runner’s perspective it makes perfect sense to pick up an extra from before filming too.
Could be as Purgatory is a spirit realm. You'll notice, like Dean, the other monsters and Leviathan seem to keep their clothing and groomed appearance intact. Whereas Castiel being an Angel, perhaps is not effected by the physical rules of the realm. Probably why he retains his powers, when he should be cut off from Heaven. He still has his teleportation, smiting abilities, and ability to hear Dean's prayers. I don't think Castiel as an Angel ever had to wash, groom, or even needed do laundry on Earth. His shabby appearance is probably due to his own deliberate powering down of his Angel abilities. So as to not be as detectable to the Leviathans. He's probably still subject to Earth physics after that point though. Which is why he looked so filthy and literally no-one else did.
The destiel is so canon at 7:00 it's unbelievable. LIKE CAN YOU SEE CAS'S RELUCTANCE TO TELL HIM WHY HE RAN AWAY (bc he loves him) AND DEAN'S FACE WHEN HE REALISES WHY I JUST CAN'T TAKE IT GODDAMN. and then oh goD AND THEN THE 'You understand' 'I understand' at 7:55 it's sO CANON BECAUSE THIS IS WHEN CAS 'UNDERSTANDS' BACK THAT DEAN LOVES HIM JUST AS MUCH AS HE LOVES DEAN
The show underutilized Benny. He could have been in on some of the bigger scores, helping the boys in some tough spots. Writing got weaker as the show progressed but that is a long time to maintain excellence.

Watching this on 01-26-2023. Now that I look back, the Castiel character started to lose his stoic persona during/after this season. He started out as a valiant badass but ended up as soft as wet bread. Shame.
Seems like the leviathans are monsters at some point that would have built some kind of permanent shelter. Why would you want to run around for eternity in a forest being chased by monsters.
Purgatory as a whole felt kinda underdeveloped. Cuz like, i can see why the writers don't do that, cuz the whole idea of purgatory is it's "purity". That it's killed or be killed, without all that extra stuff getting in the way. But like, they didn't actually set up purgatory in a way that explains why they wouldn't have built strongholds and stuff. It also feels like they just didnt have the budget to fully flesh it out which sucks.
Honestly though, while i get what they were going for, your idea is kinda more fun and in line with how humany the monsters of this world are. Purgatory should've been less "pure animalism" and more like a Rust PvP server, with strongholds and coordinated forces that then break down and start all over when they inevitably betray eachother. Just this constant warring of alliegances and alliances.
I love the purgatory arc but i really wish they animated leviathan to look like monsters and not people, but i suppose that is the supernatural gimmick
I always thought Benny shouldve been more important. Not important to like the narrative necessarily, but in terms of who he is. This is the guy who either knows or figures his way out of purgatory for Dean. I feel like a run of the mill vamp isnt gonna be the one to do that. I'm not saying he needs to be a huge player, but making him something either more obscure and powerful (phoenix comes to mind, since we've seen those guys aren't really evil, just got immortality and fire) or shouldve been a bigger named vamp (Someone with a legacy that precedes him, maybe a number 2 of a big infamous vamp). Someone who pulled this off should be someone who was clever enough to pull off some shit before this as well, is all im saying.
They never actually say. I even checked the wiki cuz supernatural has a tendency to answer those kinda questions in very throwaway lines that you can miss, but it seems that they never explained it. The closest explanation we get is that "dying in purgatory is permanent". So its not like you keep dying and being reformed and die again. Most likely? Either your soul just ceases to be, or its a full reincarnation thing where the monster soul is completely scrubbed and repurposed as a new monster, with no trace of the original.

I have my problems with purgatory, but the endless forest is actually a really strong choice imo. There's a lot of mythical afterlives that involve forests, and it fits the theme of "purity" in the sense of animalism that it was going for.
