I remember when these came out in the 90's. There were ads for them in mail order catalogs and magazines. Kinda hard to believe there still being made.
Not only made, newly designed even! I'd guess the 2022 date on the PCB is the when the board was designed, not when it was produced, doesn't seem likely to me they'd change the silkscreen every day.
Your channel is absolutely brilliant! Love the uniqueness of it. Some may find the songs and goofiness annoying or over the top, but I feel it makes your channel stand out from the rest. That, the music, the voice changes, the jokes, the faces, and we can’t forget about all the stupid games. They all keep me coming back for the next video.
Now this brought back a ton of memories. Back in the 90s you could get games almost identical to this one at every market here in Poland. They were dirt cheap back then as well.
That certainly takes some practice. I now manage 5 out of 10 times to throw them in like that, making progress here. Not sure if I'll ever reach Steves level.
Thanks to you, I now know Tetris rip-off games go by brick layer. My mom has been looking to replay tetris for a long time. And now I know breakout's generic name is brick breaker, so I can go find some knockoffs as well. Your channel is truly a bounty of hidden gems!
I swear I had this exact same brick game back in 2000, it came for free with a film camera, but it was black instead of orange, and it said "multi-game". Also remember my mother decided to hide it from me in the freezer and completely forgot about it, just to be found months later and it still worked. It is amazing these things are still being manufactured.
Another tip for getting a board like that back together is to EITHER glue another flat overlap piece onto the back, to give them both glue purchase -- or glue them against such a surface and allow them to dry level.. If gluing against a surface, then I suggest wax-paper beneath just in case. Won't matter in your case. It will definitely break again. The screw-holes are on the INSIDE of the board, and the switch is putting pressure on the OUTSIDE. So there's no support for countering that switch's pressure. :(
I learned this from another repair video that you can scrape off a lot of solder mask and bridge the broken part by soldering long pieces of paper clip. Paper clip is ridgid and conductive. In this case you might need to add some backing padding under the button because you are pressing on the broken part when you are rotating the piece so a little support might help preventing another break in the future.
A couple of things : 1. Don't use flux for these kind of repairs, flux makes bridging contacts more difficult. 2. Leftover component "legs" are excellent for this kind of repairs. 3. Glue the Knapton tape to the back of the board to add strength instead of trusting its adhesive. Use bostik or similar yellow rubbery glues. I look forward to watching part 2, where you mod it with a power switch, one of those with a wheel for the volume. 😉
Hey Steve, first of all 'grats on breaking the 100K. You deserve it (and more!). Awesome, so happy for you. About the repair; when I saw the issue my first though would be to bridge the break with two small enameled wires (magnet wire) with a little 'loop'. That way, if the board flexes a bit while playing (which it inevitably will) the wires would not break the connection as a solder joint will eventually break. And then I think I'd put a piece of plastic or wood or anything I could fit between the PCB and backside of the game - preferably something that exactly thick enough to provide some extra support. Or glue something to the back of the board to give it strength. Nevertheless, enjoyed the video, as always. Keep up the awesome work and looking forward to your next adventure!
Steve here's a little tip just incase you didn't know. When using super glue sprinkle baking Soda on top, it will dry instantly and rock hard x10 stronger. You can also sand it down. Keep up the great videos
Nice fix! Would love to see you add a few of the mods out there onto this game. New IPS screen, RGB output, better speakers etc. You could also do a custom shell to match your green Game Gear etc.
I have this somewhere, same casing but it's either off-white or grey and is called Brick Champion. Got it in the early 90s and it plays a perfectly good game of Tetris to be fair. The only variation I remember of the game was one where the shapes were a little different, not all made of four squares so you would get single squares and stuff. "2 in 1" is a more accurate subtitle =)
I loved the background music to this episode. (Yes, I call them episodes because it's now become more than just an instructional video) It's very 1980s
Awesome content as usual. I really appreciate all the effort that goes into these videos between editing, cracking jokes and just the random bits like “solid” “Dave” and “stupid”. Great work!
It would be nice to glue something flat and solid on that back side across that crack, as that rotate button will generate a lot of pressure on that narrow glue you put. Cheers.
I remember buying one of these brand new from Poundland (when everything was actually £1) Yes, it's not the best quality - but honestly the games aren't too bad, especially if you like Tetris!
I have one like this but I changed out the speaker for a smaller one because it was so loud. Mine didn't have tetris on it. It had tanks, car racing and the music one where you have to press buttons at the right time like dance dance revolution.
I love how you throw the batteries in like that and teleport the lid on. I've been trying for months since I first saw you do it, and still can't do it. I've got the batteries in a couple of times but how the hell do you get the cover to teleport?
It's clearly nothing more than simple video editing. If you slow it down, you can see he accidentally left in a frame where Dave carries the cover into place.
perfect timing! was in hospital last 4 hours. have pneumonia. just got home. i so needed a humorous repair video with cool patreon rap segue while i gasp for breath. 😂

I knew that thing would stick to the mat as soon as you dropped it. Super glue is just evil, last time I used it some spring came loose and I super glued my eyeball. Not even joking.
@@BuyitFixitDon't we all? Yeah, hobbies don't usually end up being cost effective from a monetary standpoint. But, you can't put a price on joy and knowledge you gain when you repair something.

The previous owner beat the absolute shit out of that rotate button! Must have been playing drunk and just mashed it in a rage. Amazing that it took a full Gameboy-on-a-blob chip to play a simple Tetris game. They may as well have added a few more images, but presumably the blob had that single game in ROM.
You know Steve, you're always putting down Steve for his singing. But some of it is actually not half bad. Like this one, it had me involuntarily tapping my foot... and I always seem to end up looking out for whatever rhyme or twist he's gonna pull on MunkeyJoe Tokyo, with great anticipation.
I have to wonder how many people sell things on eBay thinking "You won't believe that this chump paid me for a broken game" and the UA-cam algorithm (ALL HAIL THE ALGORITHM) somehow serves them a video of you fixing it. But in this case, I think they over-charged by 90p.
Steve - I really do enjoy your videos. And you're a pretty good singer, too! (and I promise you I have the performance experience to back that opinion up) One system I haven't seen you fix has been a Sega Saturn. They're extremely difficult to emulate and I have one that doesn't power on (apparently a common issue, as several folks have made updated power units for them), plus nice power sticks that I bought for it and I miss playing it dearly. I was wondering if you have any plans to do a power repair on a Sega Saturn any time soon? For your reference, I find your pacing and your approach very enjoyable. I also like to watch famous luthier Dan Erlewine repairing guitars, as well, because I find watching people with personalities like yours repairing things reassuring and comforting with the world being as it has been for some time now. I've not found another gaming/electronics repair person who is as enjoyable to watch as you are. Peace and harmony in all things, good man!
while the orange plastic wasn't familiar, i must have seen the ROM somewhere as a kid. that rotating graphics around 9999 instantly brought back a forgotten memory. i think one of my younger cousins got it for a Christmas in the 90s, and i got to play with it a bit.

The 80s like music playing in the background is jammin.
I love your face so much, I went out and got my own solder station today in hope to teach myself how to repair/mod gameboys. Congrats on 100k
Nice Video again, as tip for make it more solid take some cupper wire for the break points, just solder will not hold very well and will brick again.
Another tip for getting a board like that back together is to EITHER glue another flat overlap piece onto the back, to give them both glue purchase -- or glue them against such a surface and allow them to dry level..

I just came to suggest the same thing. I would have glued a splint piece over the back. It looked like that corner was unsupported?
I think gluing a thin empty PCB or a rigid plastic behind. Would use jump wires instead of solder on the broken traces.

However, you will need to ensure that the used key switch you are using is compatible with your keyboard and has the same specifications as the original space bar switch.

I think you need baking powder to strengthen the gluing or else it will break very easy again ...
while the orange plastic wasn't familiar, i must have seen the ROM somewhere as a kid. that rotating graphics around 9999 instantly brought back a forgotten memory. i think one of my younger cousins got it for a Christmas in the 90s, and i got to play with it a bit.
Try using a rough polishing bit, they are rubber with fine grit. You can remove the mask but it’s very hard to cut through the copper.
Got one of these at a santa's grotto as a kid! Pretty sure I also got one in poundland...
