Oral B Toothbrush Starts and Runs Out in 1 second - Can it be FIXED?

- In this video I attempt to fix my wife's Oral B electric toothbrush which has stopped working AGAIN!!! This time it works for 1 or 2 seconds and then stops, yet the battery is fully charged. Can it be fixed once and for all? Let's find out.
The video from Lets Fix It Garage that I mentioned in this video is here • Repair of Braun Oral-B...
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.
The most enjoyable thing about Vince's videos is that he has a go at fixing anything. He researches as best he can, brings his experience and analytical mind to solve problems and learns things as he goes. He doesn't edit his videos to remove any mistakes and his unfettered joy when he learns or fixes something is endearing and relatable. It's why I watch every video. I'm a bit sick of commenters with a superior and condescending attitude, though. What's up with those guys? Are they miserable and can only feel good by making someone else feel bad? The comment about opening the toothbrush with the base has been made by many commenters, almost all with a lovely tone and from the position of helping others. Why would someone try to make Vince feel like an idiot for not knowing? I don't understand it.
mate is fearless
the ppl who think they have superior knoowledge and are condescending are just plane miserable.
Good Job!
Resettable fuses normally resets itself without any external forces.
Resettable fuses are designed and made of polymeric PTC material in thin chip form.
With electrodes and leads attached on both sides, it is placed in series to protect a circuit. At “normal operating
condition” the device remains at an extremely low resistance (milli-ohms) and allows the electrical current to flow
through it without any restriction. When over current conditions occur, the polymeric PTC material heats up and
its resistance increases sharply. Such a sharp resistance increase (to an insulated status) cuts off the current in the
circuit, and consequently protects the element and device in the circuit. Upon fault current being removed, the
resettable fuse cools and its resistance drops to the original extremely low value. The resettable fuse is “reset” and
allows the current through the circuit again.
The squeeze destroys the fuse to a normal conductor. It's like you bridge it with solder. Same effect. The board works but without protection anymore.
Edit: I see you came to the same conclusion.
Two things (of many things) that I love about your videos:
1. The “Ah ha!” when something doesn’t work out right
2. The fact that you keep focus and get it mended anyway
I know that this video has been out a while and you’ve had some not-so-great repairs lately, but as a My Mate Vince fan, I still enjoy your videos (Especially the Rolls Royce series!).
Cheers!
Chris, a.k.a. Five String Commando 🎸
Thanks. I really don’t want to throw it out. I used to just ask my father but since he passed I’ve found videos like yours. I appreciate your help and teaching me how to fix my toothbrush.
I have attempted to repair an Oral B toothbrush and gave up. Well done for persevering.
Nice to learn about that chip reset trick. It's kinda bizarre that it is even a thhing, so it is good to know how to do that when my brush stops working eventually...
I was fixing one of these 2 months ago. It would turn on, but wouldn't power the motor. Also had to replace the PP fuse. Somehow I figured out that it was a Bourns Resettable Fuse, MF-PSML300/6-2. Basically, a 3A fuse. Found it at Mouser Electronics, had it shipped from Italy to Croatia. Perhaps Mouser has a store in UK and you can find it there? It costed under 1 EUR per each.
£1.20 in the UK with just £14.40 shipping from Mouser!
Mouser are expensive.
RS charge about a third of that shipping cost.
Excellent video. You could have used your DMM in current mode to jump across the fuse when you had it desoldered and turn it on to check the running current of the device. That way, you would know if the 1.1A is high enough to last long term. My first thought is that may be small for the inductive load, but I have no clue. Well done, and best of luck to ya!
Brilliant, now you know how you make us feeling happy every time i get to see what the problem is by checking out your videos! Thank you!❤
I absolutely love your videos I have watched your highs and low over the years. With that being said My Electric toothbrush broke yesterday After watching your video I took mine apart with no tools I just pushed down on the metal end on the floor
Came apart no problem I then push down on the Fuse and it worked instantly Saved another one from landfill Just think how many have been thrown away Because of a stupid fuse So thank you for the video 🎉
On older Oral-B toothbrushes it is possible to put them on the charging stand and twist the stand to open the bottem piece without the need to use special tools.
Exactly! You Can simple use the charger to twist off the buttom
I did that to my old Oral B tootbrush, but maybe I did something wrong, because the charging coil wires got destroyed, and it was the end of that toothbrush. Saved some parts from it though.
Interesting fault in this video anyway, what might be thought of being a battery problem, can be just this fuse.
You didn't do anything wrong, that's what it's supposed do. They don't want you to repair it, they want you to buy a new one.
That's how it worked with my old one from 2010, but my current one from 2020 isnt designed that way. With the old one, the plug had a little bump on it which fit into the base of the toothbrush to undo it.
Oral b is not very reliable. I had a Philips sonicare for 10 yrs no problems. My oral b started acting up in 2
what a lovely video Vince what a strong community you have
Worked a treat for me whilst away in Cyprus so a god send. Thankyou
Great fix Vince, weird how the chip went into lockout like that, thanks Vince keep em coming 😊
Great job Vince - what a community repair =D
🐼Blimey! Now my 3yr old won't stop saying; "PP" I'm about ready to blow my own fuse. Thank you Vince
Excellent video thankyou. It’s true UA-cam is the fountain of all knowledge. Great to see the reset although I would think disconnecting the battery would do the same, but the resistor is much quicker. You inspired me to open my old brush just for fun
Hi
First of all thanks for the insight into the brush and the steps to repair it.
Regarding your idea "... bigger is better..."
It is a question what is definded to be "better".
I am constructing something only to show the idea behind. It might be needed that the termal fuse reacts fast. A mechanical bigger fuse needs more time to heat up in the fault case and might protect the circuit behind less fast - or in other words "to slow" for some case.
As long as we do no know the aim of the hardware developer (or the HW-developers team) a general confirmation for "... bigger is better ..." is not possible.
regards GriLLe
Just a point about resistors supplied on that sticky tape. When you pull them out, you get sticky goo on the end of the wire. This will mess up the contacts of a breadboard if put in. You can actually see the goo on the resistor lead at 12:20, which is probably why it did not reset on the first attempt. Best to cut the wire and avoid the sticky bit.
Brilliant timing - I’ve literally just been given the exact same toothbrush to fix. At least I have a starting point now!😂
Whoa that tester with flir
Also imagine how many of this devices are in the landfill with fix this easy
Well done Vince
6:03 "Ha Ha"... How can you not love watching these videos. Get to learn while getting some self deprecating humor. Good stuff!!
"PP" and "I think I'm in" and "bigger is better" wow Vince 😂
Hi Vince, nice repair video as usual. In your research travels, have you ever seen a page on how to open up the Oral B io6 series ? Most I've seen are on earlier or more recent models. Cheers.
Vince, when are you going to get a wide-bottomed dish for you IPA? One that's more difficult to knock over.
But overall I'm still loving the vids. Keep up the good work.
Go to a charity shop and buy one of those tiny little crystal bowls used for dipping sauce or salt. You can find piles of them for dirt cheap.
i wonder how many of those toothbrushes have been trown away already because of this fault wich seems to be a frequent common fault. Thanks for showing us this and i also have one of those things. looks a bit differend but i think the inside will be about the same. and like you say yes a little bigger is often better, however it make the toothbrush more expensive if done from the factory. but we see that in many things if the quality goes up so is the price.
Talking about PPs and "I think I'm in". Naughtiest episode lol
Does your wife ever despair of your tinkering. You had it working and then said what I want to do is take it apart again and add this large fuse. 😂
"Hold on honey, I'm watching this man repair a PP"
😂😂😂
Yay another episode! 🎉
ok i will try this tomorrow! now it's 2 am and I have to use my daughter's toothbrush to brush my teeth, mine has the same symptoms as the one in the video. 😂😂😂😂
hi the voltage of poly fuses is important eg a 8v poly fuse on 3v might not trip properly the voltage is both required to keep it tripped and the max it can withstand once tripped
I had same problem. Tried to change battery. Got in a right 2!
@7:58 you would get voltage on both sides of a 10Meg resistor too without load on it, but it cannot carry the current, so although there is voltage on both sides don't assume that it is healthy :-)
6:50 why did it took me out from laughing so hard at the word pp.. I was drinking my sweet tea and accidentally went down the wrong pipe. 😂😂
UA-cam was made for community and videos, this is the perfect example. Not for ads every 90seconds and constant selling and promoting.
Ads pays the wages stop with the moaning no ads no UA-cam simple 🤔
Brave browser... no ads :)
It's the Wife's Toothbrush again making for another interesting video.
Tries to resist the urge to think about women and their buzzy toys :)
at first i thought it may be that the fuses are vibrating off the circuit solder joint etc. But if the fuse is resettable - the bridging of pin 35 to ground must be resetting it. another great fix by the previous videos comments though.
Love the videos Vince 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Doesn't toothpaste on foam/plastic seals help bleach it white again? i've heard it used on fridge freezer door seals to get them white again
To open the toothbrush, you use the charger base not plumbing equipment. They've actually added some bits to the charger base to do this job
If only Sorin sees this very conservative repair he would say something like ""no fuse no blown fuse"🤣...nice video😇
You could have covered the replacement fuse in something like that liquid insulating tape stuff
This toothbrush in its dysfunctional state would have been great years ago. Due to a either a decreased winter snowpack or higher summer temps (or a combo of both), we were experiencing a significant water shortage in Washington State (USA). Christine Gregoire, our governor at the time, issued a public advisory that Washingtonians should brush only every other tooth, in order to conserve water. The defective toothbrush could have served as a reminder, since you could probably only brush a tooth or two in your entire mouth before it went kaput. 😂
Wife ' Did you fix it? YES! DAM i was so close that time too, Getting a NEW ONE!!! 😂🥰
If all else fails it's almost Christmas buy your wife a new toothbrush lol... Love your content, no hate.
You actually can buy these PP fuses from mouser, farnell, etc. Should be the MF-PSML300-2 Bourns according to the datasheet, right?
It's actually a MF-PSML300/6-2 .... There's a MF-PSML300/12-2 as well - it's either the 6v or the 12v versions.
it worked for me !
Interesting one vince ❤️❤️🥰🥰🥰🤗🤗🤗🤗
Well done. Though, the doomsayer in me suspects ChatGPT et al now think the proper fix for toothbrushes is to put physical pressure on a PPTC. Yes, faffing about (professional tinkering) with power supplies to micros can put them in an unknown state, especially if GPIO pins are powered before a proper reset occurs. No disrespect intended.
Is it wrong that I giggle a little every time I hear Vince say pp fuse? 😝
6:04 For a second I thought your wife laughed at you haha
Could the motor be gunked up?
If I were the electrons I would refuse to go through such a monstrosity. You're fortunate enough they're so attracted by your battery positive.
Next time please use a TH 0.odd R 1/4 W fusible resistor.
PP is a 3A fuse... you should stick with original rating otherwise it will likely fail again at a random time and annoy your wife, and we all know how dangerous it is to annoy our wives...
PP seems to match a Bourns MF-PSML300 series, there are two versions a 6V and 12V, have emailed you the URLs to buy them.
Sounds like an old cement mixer.😂😂
Happy wife, happy life.😊❤
W Vince 😊
The old beep on beep off hehe
Vince can fix it
Sweet
there is a lot in here for the vince out of context instagram channel in this video, lmao
I giggled more than I should everytime yiu said pp. Hehe
Technology is more smarter than you think, seeing that chip reset thing baffles me 😅
What about the RR?
PP and RR.
I have to question what people are doing with their Oral B toothbrush if it requires pressing down on a fuse. My first one I bought in 2009, it lasted right up until 2020 when I had to replace it because all the rubber gripping was falling off.
The current one I bought in 2020, it's still working to this day, around 4yrs later, and I expect to get at least 10yrs out of that one too.
Both of mine have been these more expensive ones, same as in this video, with all the fancy features. First one had a little gadget that told you when to brush each quadrant of the mouth, the current one has bluetooth connectivity to the phone with apparently a camera so you can see what you are brushing...
Vince: ""Just press down on the PP"
Me: *laughs to death*
I tried this and it worked but then I tried forcing the rubber on the top of the brush to go underneath but then it stopped working and I doesn’t seem to turn on. Can someone help me fix this, I don’t really have any tools as well.
I was able to fix it by using a nail clipper as my 1k resistor 😂 but how important is it to have the rubber underneath the toothbrush head? I can’t seem to move it underneath it. Any help?
Philips Sonicare is the only way to go for me they have lasted longer than most electric brushes, back in the 1970 when my parents bought our first electric brush
I have Oral B
Pulse water jet
All in all the most recent brush due to our 10y old battery failing was a
Philips Sonicare HX6807 ProtectiveClean 4300 Electric Toothbrush for £65 25 Apr2024
I had bought about 20 Phillips heads from ebay in Apr 2015 for £8
The high speed vibration does shift the crud between my teeth I do not have to visit my hygienist for a descale says my dentist. I am 63y old
I "suspect" what happened is that people read the comment, tried the fix, replied saying it worked, then within minutes (or maybe an hour) it stopped working, and they didn't bother going back to correct their comment because at that point they didn't care about the video anymore (or possibly forgot about it).
If a fuse behaves like that, just remove and bridge 😂
Hello Vince I like watching you fix interesting things. I’m just wondering if you’re interested to buy two broken Wii off me and you can make a video of trying to fix them if you are interested let me know.
I swear it works
Im surprised that more often than not getting delivered the wrong item when getting specific chips and electronic parts.. everytime i order anything that specific i give about a 50% chance im getting the right thing..
The fault will be the cap connected to the reset line it pulls the pin low on power up one end will go to power through a resistor on power up the cap will act like a short before it charges up and this is long enough to reset the MCU on power up. When the cap fails it won't hold the reset line low to ground long enough to reset the MCU and start it. The cap will be a 0.1uf with a 100k resistor so it charges quite slow long enough to do the reset. Most MCU have reset lines that work like this.
well done bit of a faff should have just got a new wife
i was just think about ps4 no display problem couple thing i think one hdmi plug to display chip might break off or display chip to power plug that there not much power to display chip i was think if i was work on ps4
11:08 you do realise, you shorted that test point to ground when you did that continuity test? 😅
Kind of weird that resetting the mcu (hopefully) fixes it. Maybe there is something that is upsetting the mcu or it can be a faulty chip idk
Any of those rubber or silicone pieces can be soaked in even 3% hydrogen peroxide to kill the mold and brighten the plastics.
when you start needing a microprocessor to brush your teeth..... thats what you get!
So much glitchiness from this device.
The job is a good ‘un
Seems like those PP fuses are really bad.
1:27 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳
FYI you just put the charger on the base and twist to open these up :) your welcome
Doing that risks the coil being damaged. It's what you're supposed to do before recycling and not supposed to be used for repair.
Not much that can't be fixed by pressing down on your PeePee :)
Huh huh huh, huh huh huh, huh huh huh, pp fuse, huh huh huh.
Get trolled m8 xD
By who?
demonetized for saying PP too often 😂
"" beter than factory "" you are touching nothridgefix terittory love the vids mate long time viewer from morroco with you're vids i learnt english and reverse engineering
Surely take the toothbrush off before working on it? Getting it all mucky makes it un-reusable. I wouldn't want it in my mouth.
Great job though
Its all about what money they can make from the end users buy a brand new unit
for goodness' sake, take the brush off & put it somewhere clean & safe.
Bypass , it's 3v
i am only 6mins in, but forgive me for being cynical, when you are pushing down hard the board is flexing aking to a dry joint elsewhere surely?
Pliers? Spudger?
FFS the opening tool is on the back of the charging base itself.
Lodge the male part on the base of the toothbrush and twist.
I just removed and bridged the fucking fuze and the toothbrush is still working till this day
You did it all wrong, the correct procedure is to throw it away and buy a new one!
