Love it when an author compares being gay and being sent to prison for a heinous crime in the same passage 😩
i like this but your like ratio is at 69

Hey
I know right? its SO great 😩😩😩
omfg,, that is my FAVORITE shit™
the fact that the book is called ‘ugly love’ is also a big 🚩 because no babe it’s not ugly love this is ugly manipulation and abuse!
Lmao fr
Nope how TF is that abuse dude. Miles never abused her

The fact that you said "Corbin Bleu from Jump In" and not "Corbin Bleu from HSM" made me laugh so hard for some reason.
LadyBossNinja I loved that movie!!!
LadyBossNinja it’s from a vine
I’ve never seen the Vine but I firmly believe Jump In was the superior Corbin Bleu film.
You stole my burrito, Charlie I’m not in cooking school, never will be and never was, but I also read that as Gordon Bleu...
This book sounds like a Wattpad book
Honestly it does. Those really terrible bad boy,/good girl sort of thing with the 'hot possessive douchbag'
Gurl, I read Wattpad books better than this.
Colleen Hoover's books be like that sometimes
All of her books are like wattpad stories and not even the good ones
I’ve seen the first chapter of like two of her books as a preview on Wattpad before
“We both laughed at our sons big balls”

I think there's nothing wrong with abusive relationships in books if that's what the story is about. I don't want to just read about positive things, I like books that present the good and bad in our world. BUT, I totally agree with what you said in the end, it has to be written in a way where the relationship is presented as abusive and not as this romantic positive thing.
only good stories about abusive relationships are thrillers where the victim escapes the abuser or as a cautionary tale to people to show what red flags too look out for.
Agreed!!!
Ondine Ariel this is EXACTLY how I feel as well! Bc I like to read about things that are sad etc but something negative twisted to look positive is not the way to go.... it’s like abusive families in books
Ugly Love and November 9 are the worst ones written by her. But she did redeem herself in "It ends with us" where abusive relationship is not redeemed or romantized
100% agree. The only time I have enjoyed reading abusive relationships is when it is treated as such, not romanticized and not made to look like something else. Abusive relationships exist, and it is fair to address that, but when it is portrayed as healthy, it doesn't quite make sense to me. I also don't like when the characters themselves don't notice. The only time it's fine for me is when they don't notice at first but slowly come to that realization and escape the relationship.
As a librarian working in high school with 16-18 year olds this is a vey important video and I will pass it on to my partners at work. Awesome job. Respect. :)

Will Herondale haha i love this comment!!
About a few months ago my younger cousin read this book and said it was so cute and i should read it (shes 11 so first how did she get her hands on this book) but i got maybe half way through the book and started crying. mY COUSIN THOUGHT THAT- I am so mad. I didn't finish the book and afterwards her and I had conversation, but I was actually sick to my stomach that my little cousin thought that THAT was LOVE? I told her shes not allowed to read anymore Colleen Hoover books, and handed her one of my Percy Jackson books, considering that was more age appropriate and not mentally scarring for me when she talked about it.
Needless to say, I need therapy, and I'm glad someone is actually firing some shots at Colleen for this depiction of 'love'.
Kristixlol yeees show your cousin what quality literature is
YES Percy Jackson is perfect for her age. Great characters with GOOD MORAL COMPASSES and great life lessons taught through kick ass adventure stories.
I am 19 but still couldn't read that book.... it was completely disgusting in my views, never completed it. UGH!!!
Anyways, thumbs up for Percy Jackson series.
And once she gets through so good literature, show her some actually cute contemporary. There are so many out there with better romance than this crap.
I hate Percy Jackson 😂😂
It was so annoyingly childish and those mystical creatures just popped out when it was convenient for the plot and the characters were so immature
Don't give such a shitty overrated series to your poor cousin
i could've let the "everyone wants sex" line go because not every character an author writes shares the author's viewpoints, but this lady clearly has some kind of issues with lgbt stuff based on the other jokes about being gay
Also everyone wants love line like it was already bad enough with the subtle homophobia and the ace erasure (as often) but also the aro erasure as well (even thou you could argue love is not only romantic one but this is Colleen Hoover we’re talking about I really don’t expect she was meaning that in that line)
@@-dark-paradiseyeah it’s like. In this case bcuz it’s cropped up a couple times I think this is her own issues w queer ppl instead of her writing a character w issues w queer ppl, whose ideas she disagrees with. Like this is all her lmao
Now that Colleen Hoover is very popular again and everyone on Tiktok loves her books, I just keep thinking about your vlogs where you rant about how terrible her books are. Brings me joy

Her books aren't romances. They're horror novels where the scary shit is the relationships, lol.
cecillbill they are targeted to teens, its a book romanticising abuse for teens, that could make the teens think that that is how relationships work. Why doesnt she just target them to adults?

TW: domestic abuse
I think the problem with books like these are twofold: 1. the message that emotional abuse is wrong unless A. they are dealing with their own "issues" and B. they are attractive. If this is the case, then they are not "abusive" they are just "damaged" and that is somehow hot and romantic (which means they are in a roundabout way equating "abusive" to "sexy" which is not only gross, its dangerous especially to young girls). It seems to me that this idea of "damaged" being a "sexy" way of saying "abusive" is a common trend in erotica, and that especially problematic given - 2. The idea that if a person is merely "damaged" then you can "fix" them with enough love. These messages are not only problematic, as you pointed out, but can lead someone to stay in an abusive relationship in the hopes that their abuser will one day love them enough to "get over" their trauma and stop abusing them. And that's something that can literally get someone killed. These book are not only bad, they are dangerously irresponsible. Say it with me-- your abuser's trauma does not justify their abuse.
"Trauma doesn't justify being abusive," very well said. I hate the "daddy hit me when I was younger" trope that automatically absolves the male lead of all "problematic" tendencies! 🤮
yes yes yes!! perfectly said
Omg I've been arguing with people abt this thing for like FOREVER. like so on point

I love how you’re able to make a serious video entertaining while still providing FACTS. It kinda sucked how you had to keep on giving disclaimers before saying something but unfortunately that’s just how the world is right now. Definitely don’t feel forced to read things you feel like you won’t like because of UA-cam (for a rant video or whatever)! I absolutely love the videos where you’re giving your live reaction to the book as you read it so keep it up! :)
Marie Namiah If you don’t have any squicks and triggers that’s great for you and all, but you don’t need to be so condescending and dismissive about it.
@@WarKeineAbsicht I don't think they were talking about disclaimers for things that could be disturbing or triggering. A lot of people now put disclaimers before expressing their (usually not even offensive) opinion on a book. Usually something along the lines of "I'm not saying that it's a bad thing if you have a different opinion on this book. Everyone can have opinions so please don't attack me because I promise I'm not attacking you."
This video solidified the fact that I'm never going to read a Colleen Hoover book lmao 😂

"...Just kidding she can choke."
I legit bursted out laughing.
This is my favorite video on UA-cam.
I felt a single tear of joy run down my face from laughter.
I walked into Barnes and Noble today, and the first thing I saw was a display with all of her books and a sign that read, "Just because they do bad things sometimes doesn't mean they're a bad person."
I about died.
now that colleen hoover is popular again , i feel so good coming here and satisfying my hater self
teenage you was so fun
i can't believe this book was shelved in the YA section of your library. eek.
and maybe someday is shite. don't listen to anyone.
legit tho, That relationship, whilst not as bad as this one, is equally as cooked. It's seriously strange how this woman makes money and writing all these relationships that are always so problematic.
Page Turner it’s maddening!
Lol never seen your channel before haha, just subscribed you’re pretty cool😄😄
aww, thanks!
There’s a weird process to cataloging and most of the time the librarians who interact with the public don’t determine where items are shelved. There have been times that my co-workers and I have actually sent items back requesting they be placed elsewhere. Ha ha!
it really feels like you're being gaslit by the whole world when you don't like colleen hoover's books and everyone else does. "all your perfects' literally traumatised me; apart from the cringey lines, the portrayal of love and infertility and mental illness in that book? horrifying. the couple's relationship is strained because of their fertility issues, she spirals into depression and gets no help for it, the mmc cheats on her (and claims he did it because he missed her and loved her so much), and everything is solved in the last few pages. i am still reeling from the horrid experience that was that book.
I came back to this video because I remember this so vividly from years ago when the booktube community was pointing out the problematic writing of Colleen Hoover. Now, her books are undeniably trendy and popular like what….
Well her books are targeted to teens and most teenage girls are on tiktok so I guess that's why. I'm a teenage girl and I also got introduced to her from friends I quite like some of them tbh
It’s all because of the damn TikTok

I read Slammed by Collen Hoover last year, and I utterly HATED it. I don't know, I just couldn't stand it. It was so juvenile, hypocritical & manipulative. Maybe I should give her books another shot too?
NOT.
Prer Tae for some reason i kind of liked slammed, but the 2nd book was trash and she tried to drag the success out. overall she’s pretty fucking juvenile as a writer.
Layla Hasanzadah I've heard smilar thoughts about it too.
The only book by her that is actually good and has a good message and made me cry was It Ends With Us. That's good, in my honest opinion.
The first book that I ever read by Colleen Hoover was It Ends With Us. And it was actually one of my favorite book that stuck with me. It made me feel a lot of things. I thought it was pretty amazing. Now, Ugly Love seems completely different (in a bad way) xD not interest on reading that one.
I guess it was because It Ends With Us was something that Hoover herself had gone through. Her parents had abusive relationship and she hasn't, in any way, romanticized domestic violence and that's why it was so good.
You were ahead of your time
i keep coming back 2 this video whenever the booktok colleen hype gets on my nerves a bit too much
Same!! They’re starting to dislike it though so we are getting there lmao

Yes!!! I haven't read this (and not planning on it) but how many woman have been through relationships like this and have come through the other end with scars, and then this chick is writing relationships like that and acting like its love and making them for young adults and teens to learn about love, and seeing this shit. No. Pls authors, write healthy relationships when writing for young adults and teens.
Natasha Moore Not all of her books are for younger audiences(i.e. Too Late) and not all of her books have terrible relationships(i.e. Without Merit)
To be fair, I think authors should be able to write about abusive relationships so long as it's clear that the relationship is unhealthy. So long as it isn't romanticized I think it's fine to write about it.
@@pikapower_kirby that's the point. She romanticizes cheating/drama /abuse etc

His channel is literally a digital book club, and I'm HERE for it!
Here three years later after reading two Colleen Hoover books because of tiktok. I only read the second one because I thought they all couldn’t be that awful with such good reviews, right? I’m in full agreement, all her romances are toxic abusive relationships, based purely on lust being disguised as love, zero character development and a “twist” ending that is lame and predictable.
I’ve never read a book from colleen hoover and I’m so glad I haven’t!! Honestly all the things you say are true! Thankyou I won’t ever read her books
Boy: I make all the rules
Girl: oh okay yeah I guess I’m okay with that.
Low key Tamlin and Feyre.
Christine Roland agreed but thankfully Sarah shows how that is abusive later unlike in this book
Christine Roland except that Feyre was never ok with that
I agree, and that’s how Rhys kind of was in the recent novella. He didn’t make rules for her like this, but he did oversexualize and control her. Like them bitches couldn’t even look at one another without fucking. What kind of relationship??
I've only read the first book but if this comment pertaining to that 1 then he definitely had a reason to control her like that. He was trying to save a whole country
Um actually Girl... I wouldn’t comment until you’ve read the second book at least. I’m not going to try and sway your opinion, but def read the second book before deciding if Tamlins rule making is... good, I guess.

What I think it is funny is that in 'this is how it ends', she writes about an abusive relationship even though her other relationships are just as bad 😬
It Ends With Us, not This is How it Ends, but yeah I agree with you
Ik this comment is 4 years old lmao
At this point i think she needs therapy
@@onsrejeb6083 I have read a bunch of her books for the hype and to get an idea of her stories and writing style and stuff. And I have the same concerns. I feel like she didn't get the mental help and therapy when it was really necessary and now I'm just worried about her
I feel like the main guy being a walking red flag is a common theme in her books. It was the same with Ryle in It Ends With Us. Back then I wrote it off as CoHo making him creepy on purpose (as he ends up as an abuser), but then in her note at the end she was discussing how she had a hard time because even she kind of fell for him in the beginning? Um he was literally creepy as hell from the get go and idk what about him was EVER lovable??? That's when I decided I'll never read a book from her again lmao
I’ve seen her books around multiple book communities, and honestly, from what you’ve quoted, I’m disgusted 🤷🏼♀️
I wished you read "It Ends With Us" its the only book I ever read from her and it's really good and handles the abusive relationship the way it should be handled. I have never seen anyone mark a library book LOL. I love how much you look out for women characters!!!!!!!
I didn't like that one as much.
I read Maybe Someday when I was like 11, and thought about it just recently and read all of her books almost, and I've only read like 3 I absolutely hated.
It Ends With Us is also the only Colleen Hoover book that i've ever read, and until I saw this review I also thought that it was a good example of gender equality, exploring relationships. However, listening to this review I realise now that 'oh no, that book is also really messed up'.
I recently read “It ends with us” and it was like also my first time reading a Colleen Hoover book and I was just so disappointed because it definitely is better than what “Ugly Love” sounds like but like it was also very messed up and her writing style and the characters made me hate myself. They acted like 10 year olds and the dialogue sounded like a bad wattpad story. Other than that it had a good message and somewhat good plot which was like the only good part about the book so yea read on your own risk🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
@@reginawohletz6250 My first Colleen Hoover book was "Maybe Someday" and I loved it so much that I couldn't wait to read her other books .. Just came over to rewatch this book review after seeing Caleb's newest video about Colleen Hoover and...I don't think he gave his teenaged self enough credit in the newest video.
In this video he straight-up says that he would have had a higher opinion of this book if there was an epilogue that acknowledged that this was an abusive relationship. Which is exactly the case with the only Colleen Hoover book that he's had any positive thoughts about.
*I AM HOWLING*

Maybe this comment will get lost among all your other comments, but if you ever read this I’d like to tell you that as the mom of a teenager who likes to read I cannot tell you enough how much I appreciate your candid review and making me aware that this garbage glorifying abuse is out there and being recommended. Thanks for letting your viewers know that this is NOT cute. I will talk to my kid about it. Also, you’re hilarious, keep up the great work
I feel like Colleen Hoover books are just over, like they are SUPER problematic and our society now just shouldn't stand for it. Don't we have enough sexism and abuse in EVERYDAY LIFE?!?!?! Tysm for the honesty!! Everyone loves this book, like wtf, I get everyone has their own opinions but it honestly made me feel kinda crazy that I was the only person I know who doesn’t like this book. It isn’t romance its abuse and that ain’t cute. I’m not gunna be a hypocrite I probably would’ve enjoyed this book when I was 14, however I feel this is the kind of book you would like if your new to reading. Now I’m so much more mature and can see the red flags. To be fair if it was labelled as a toxic relationship then it wouldn’t be so bad but it’s promoted as a love story. My one big concern is that its targeted to young impressionable people who may then in return think it’s okay to be used instead of someone getting therapy.💀
