  • Hi folks, I'm sharing two larger knives, the Fallkniven A1 Survival Knife and the Bark River Bravo 1.5. Both knives offer professional grade quality and are very popular with serious outdoor people, adventurers and preppers. The specs are listed below. Enjoy.
    Fallkniven A1 -- Survival Knife w/Kraton handle in a custom Kydex sheath with large belt loop, drain hole and firesteel loop
    Overall Length: 11 inches or 27.9 cm
    Blade Length: 6.3 inches or 16 cm
    Blade Steel: Laminated VG10 @ 59 HRC
    Blade Thickness: .24 inch or 6 mm
    Weight: 11 ounces or 311 grams
    The A1 comes with either a Zytel or leather sheath. The Kydex sheath is an optional upgrade. Some of these ultra-hard super steels can be prone to micro chipping, but any knife can chip if it strikes the wrong surface with enough force. VG10 takes a hair popping edge.
    Bark River 1.5 -- Black Canvas Micarta with Red Liners
    Overall Length: 11 inches or 27.9 cm
    Blade Length: 5.8 inches or 14.7 cm
    Blade Steel: CPM 3V @ 58 - 59 HRC
    Blade Thickness: .217 inch or 5.5 mm
    Weight: 9.8 ounces or 277 grams
    This knife came with a brown sheath and firesteel loop. This is another great knife and comparable to the A1, but a bit lighter in the hand.
    Bark River Mini Fox River - Black Canvas Micarta with Red Liners
    Overall Length: 6.6 inches or 16.7 cm
    Blade Length: 2.9 inches or 7.3 cm
    Blade Steel: CPM 3V @ 58 - 59 HRC
    Blade Thickness: .150 inch or 3.8 mm
    Weight: 3.8 ounces or 107 grams
    The mini Fox River came with the sheath shown in the video. This sheath will mount onto the 1.5 sheath, but it will hang down by about 1 ½ inches. The min Fox River excels at food prep, cleaning game, skinning, and small camp tasks.

    Both of these are really fantastic blades. You can't miss with either one. I love that tension knob on the Fallkniven. I have that on my ESEE 5 and Junglas that stay on my pack. That is a great piece of added security in keeping your blades where they belong.

    Excellent knives. Both are top quality for sure. That's a beautiful sheath you have for the Bark River. I have the A1 and it has performed very well. It's quite heavy and stout, but it can take battoning.

      I'm with you on the F1 and a folding saw combo. But, I use a F1 that I custom handled with burl maple with custom pins along with a custom leather sheath that I also made that allows me horizontal carry, standard belt and dangler. I use a Bahco Laplander saw and also a Bravo 1.5 V3 rampless and a custom ferro rod with the same handle wood as my F1.....that is until last week end. I was in the woods doing my thing, young man came up and said I will give you $1000 for your "setup". I told him the F1 was not for sale but he insisted.....so he ended up giving me $800 for everything. Except my F1. Which I will never sell, love that knife! He had an F1 handled by Bark River that fit the sheath like a glove.

    Say heah, this video helped me find a small knife for my 3V Bark River Set, that Mini Fox River is it, I have the Bravo 1 and the Bravo 1.5, my A2 Set started with tge Bravo 1 too and I also have the Fallkniven A-1 which sometimes I pair it with my Cold Steel Mini Pendleton in VG-1 it's not laminated but it's VG-1 and both do compliment eachother. or I simply carry my Victorninox Delemont Collection Ranger Grip 78 with my A-1, But it was great to see that Mini Fox River with that Bravo 1.5. I also had a pretty good knife customised, I like that 6" blade size, I don't have alot in tgat size but I do have a few, even a CarbonV S.R.K. But anyhow when I was build ending my Swamp Rat stable, when I got to the y" size, I didn't like that Tactical look and it was just a little too thick for what I do with my knives, especially I'm the bush, so I had the top gaurd taken off and thinned down, it came out great and it still chops good for tgat size and slices good too, it now has a high Saber vex grind and I can make good feathers with it. Thanx for sharing your knivrs, I enjoy your videos.

    I have both and I love both knives. My bravo 1.5 is A2 steel and (in my opinion) is easy to show stains if you don't take care in a wet environment or just after cut something wet as food or wood resins. But awesome anyway. My A1 is just the best, but you have to be carefully with small nuts, bones or little stones because the edge can crack!! showing titles bites, as a micro chips later .but easy to fix using a strop. (sorry about my English).

    Say Heah, I too have both knives and the 3V defenetly is a super steel, But the A-1 with the laminated blade, makes for a extremely strong knife against breakage, Check out the destruction video on the A-1. That video bumped my A-1 a couple notches in my Survival Knife Stable, and the VG-10 also holds a decent edge, But I still like my BK's in 3V as well as my A-2's.

      I hear you. Leather sheaths can be very aesthetically pleasing and most functional. They will last a lifetime if you take care of them. I am also partial to wooden handles because of their beauty and warm feel, but Thermorun or Kraton can be very practical in adverse conditions. There are some custom Fallkniven’s (S1) with wooden handles available on the DLT Trading website and you can always order a custom sheath if you can bear the long wait times. Of course, the custom Fallkniven’s with wooden handles are more expensive. I’m sure the knife you choose will be right for you. Enjoy.

      Thales Rezende It would be not be too heavy for me, but it might for a true ultra-light
      backpacker. It weighs 9.8 ounces or 277 grams. For me, it would be a matter of
      use and utility. If I have a use for it, I’m bringing a big blade and more. If
      I don’t need it, I will simply go with a 5 or 6 ounce knife, but I always have
      a quality at my disposal. Thanks.

    • @TheAmericanOutfitter
      @TheAmericanOutfitter  8 років тому +2

      +budaflash Hi, I’m not really comfortable with making purchasing recommendations. There are simply too many variables and at the end of the day, it’s your own hard earned money. I can say that both knives offer premium build quality. If I only had to choose one, it would probably select the Bravo 1.5 because like you said, it looks classier and will likely retain more value over time. It also offers more handle options and can be paired with another Bark River companion knife to create a truly custom set-up. Follow your instinct. I’m sure the knife you choose will be the right one for you. Respectfully

    I've never handled thermorun before, and curious why the winter/summer preference? Is this due to differences in handle material?

    • @TheAmericanOutfitter
      @TheAmericanOutfitter  10 років тому +2

      cdb8315 Hi cdb8315, Thremorun and Kraton are very similar materials. They have a
      tacky like feel to them, but are not rubber. They are impervious to dirt, grim,
      sand, rain or snow. Fallkniven designed then for use in cold environments and the
      F1 actually serves as the official survival knife for the Swedish Air Force. Polished
      micarta scales look better but offer less traction than Thremorun. The handles
      on the Fallknivens are a little narrower than the Bark Rivers. Having said that
      both Fallkniven and Bark River make professional grade knives and it is a pleasure
      to work with either. I will share more premium knives in the future. Thanks.

    Why would you a laminate 2 pieces of steel the other can't you get a piece of steel that thick

    • @deathbyastonishment7930
      @deathbyastonishment7930 5 років тому

      It’s actually three pieces of steel laminated together. The core piece of steel is hard and holds a good edge, while the “cheeks” or cladding steel is softer and more rust resistant. The idea is to increase the toughness and rust resistance of the knife while also having a hard edge.

    HELP ! After much review I spent 200$ on amazon and got a Fallkniven A1 in silver. I am concerned if it is a fake or the real deal. The box has the hologram, barcode, and brown box BUT my big concern is that the lamination lines on both sides are not even. At the tip of the knife the lamination lines do not meet at the same point one curves back at a different angle vs the other, also they have some imperfection not very straight. I want you to look at your A1's and let me know if your knife exhibit the same build quality.

      @TheAmericanOutfitter  10 років тому

      knightnox5
      Hi, it is unlikely that it is a fake, but you can weigh
      and measure the knife to confirm the specs. There are other knives that are much
      easier to counterfeit, but the Fallkniven A1 would not be one of them. The box
      should say A1 Army Survival Knife and Fallkniven AB with all the company
      information below. It should have the Swedish crown in the lower left corner of
      the box. The description on the box should be in both Swedish and English. It
      will also say Zytel sheath on the box. The oval stamp on the satin blade should say A1
      Fallkniven LAM VG10. My lamination line is wider towards the tip and thinner
      towards the ricasso. The VG10 blade steel blanks are made in Japan. It is very
      possible you received one with an uneven lamination line (poor workmanship). I
      have a Cold Steel laminated blade from Japan and the lamination line is all
      over the place. The fit and finish was terrible, but I am certain it is the
      real deal because I purchased it from a very reputable dealer. I do not buy
      high quality knives from Amazon or eBay. I only buy my knives directly from
      authorized dealers. If the quality control is not up to standards I will simply
      send it back for an exchange. I once had to return a Bark River and received a
      new one within a week. I paid $179 for my A1 satin finish brand new in
      the box, but that was a while ago. DLT Trading is currently selling them for
      $194.95. I hate to hear stories of dissatisfaction, but we have all experienced
      this at one time or another. I’m sorry you received one that was not up to
      snuff. Perhaps you can exchange it. Thank you for sharing your story

    • @TheAmericanOutfitter
      @TheAmericanOutfitter  10 років тому

      Max Inpains Some of the VG10 steel blanks are from Japan for sure (Origin: Sweden& Japan). Some Cold Steel blades also come from Japan. The Japanese know athing or two about producing high quality steel. As for Chinese fakes, they arenot convex. The come with a flat grind and beveled edge. This is easy to spot.Creating a convex edge is a lot of work and not conducive to counterfeiting orthe production of fakes. Also, the lamination line on fakes is not real. It isonly an etched line. Again, easy to spot for any Fallkniven owner. The boxes onfakes are also different. They are white inside and outside. I own their entiremain line and all my boxes are identical with no fraudulent deviations. Anyonewho has a collection of Fallknivens can spot a fake with only one eye open.Only an inexperienced knife person will be fooled. If you want the facts aboutChinese made counterfeits simply go to the Fallkniven website or call themdireclty. If you are concerned about fakes, simply stay away from auctionsites, unknown dealers, street vendors or gun shows. I only buy from authorizeddealers like Knives Ship Free, DLT Trading or The Knife Connection. These folksdon’t sell fakes. The fact that Knightnox5 was able to return the knife for anexchange strongly suggests it was not a fake, but rather an issue of poor workmanship.Fraudsters don’t take knives back.
