    I didn't much want to walk today, but watching this video has pushed me to get up and get outside to walk the at least 5,000 daily steps I promised myself I would walk. In two weeks, I hope to be at 10,000 daily steps. Thanks for the encouragement. Diane, aged 77.

    He found himself and his family got him back too! I was stuck in a rut myself but this channel helped me to change and I lost 25kg (56lb) and my wife and kids are going to watch me ride the final stage of the tour de France this summer. I sometimes feel selfish going training instead of being with my kids but this video shows why it is so important! Very moving

    • @irfuel
      @irfuel 7 місяців тому +7

      You know what's even more selfish? Stuffing your face with fast food and candy, dying at an early age and not being around for your kids. When you go training you're investing in your family's future.

    • @PhantomMs1
      @PhantomMs1 7 місяців тому +1

      I am right there with ya, lost over 70# and started cycling. I sometimes as well think I'm being selfish with the training, but also I find it great to see my 5 year old want to exercise and move around. Showing your kids that putting in the time and effort and bettering yourself is a good thing and hopefully help keep them out of the lifestyle I just broke free of.

      It's hard to articulate on a video or in writing Bill. Your family and friends are seeing you grow as a person. Because that's what happens. So they also get the benefits.. Sometimes we focus too much on the medals, bathroom scales, belt sizes, 5km times. We miss that we've become a better person to be around. Less moody. Can do person and not a 'can't be bothered' one. More alive. Grown character as well as muscles. Become an inspiration for your kids. You only need two things to get ahead in life. Discipline & Determination.

    I 100% steal your channel theme when I talk to people about fitness. "What made you start running?" "I just want to be better than average."
    Thanks for the work you put into this channel. It really is life changing. 400lbs -> 230lbs. I'm able to sit on a rowing machine without snapping it in half. I went from struggling to hike parts of the Appalachian Trail near my house, to running those same sections several times a week just for fun. I can ride a mountain bike without breaking the wheels going over a small bump.
    The motivation for starting was all the small things, death by a thousand cuts. So, it is all the small things I notice the most. Being able to bend at the waist and tie my shoe, it is hard not to smile every time I do it. Sitting down in a chair without a careful inspection, or nervously doing a squat, crouch sit. Heh, I am comfortable going out in public wearing full lycra when road biking now (so, I guess not everything is positive, lol).
    Yeah, that guy is a version of me.

    My daughter became very unwell and without going into details I was very overweight, I started walking, not only to be around for her in the future but to help her to get well, eventually she came on walks with me, it's been an important part of her life for over 7 years... Time moved on... I had two major surgeries which got me down into the depths of despair and led me to putting on a lot of weight again, I'm trying to drag myself back up, thanks for this video... going out for a walk now. The inspiration and example he has set for his children will echo throughout their lives.

    Well done to him. His opening is especially poignant; how his sadness was linked to depression. This precisely why I do not use mockery and ridicule as a way to urge folks to be healthier. Most people know how they feel inside and just need some love, encouragement, some strategy and a few role models so they can start the journey. And yes, if they need to do it for their kids or spouse, that’s good enough to take the first step.

  •  7 місяців тому +6

    I agree... especially his first part of change, the start to be more active... go for walks, play with your kids, be more active... that's the start, you don't need to start with running if that's too hard, you can start with walking, you don't need to be cycling from one country to another, you can start with the cheapest indoor bike (I got mine for like 20 bucks used) with few minutes and then break, then another few... you don't need to start swimming front crawl at 1 minute / 100m pace, you can just move in the water slowly at start and learn technique to not hurt yourself
    no matter what activity you choose (or multiple), doing something is more than doing nothing... and the more you do something, the easier it will be to do more

    Thanks to both of you for sharing this. I"m 265lbs and 5'8". I used to be very fit into my late 20s with bodyweight and running exercise, and wasn't too bad into my late 30s while bicycling everywhere, but I was definitely putting on weight. I'm trying to pivot the negative attitude of "Ugh, I suck and I NEED to work out!" to "Working out releases endorphins and all that. It can feel good, and I want to feel good". I was "Feeling good" on food and alcohol, and now I"m starting to realize the food and alcohol don't feel as good as taking care of my body.

    This is a nice break from all the self indulgent fitness influencer scum out there trying to push gimmicky products for profit. “This shit is hard, but it is worth it” is a better take away than “take this supplement and you’ll lose weight, links in the description”

    Subscribed. Your mission is what everyone needs. I have been trying to find my way but every fitness influencer loses weight and then begins to gatekeep and sell a program. It just blows my mind why the immediate need to make a profit at the misfortune of others. Not saying is bad but everydamn person on socials that loses weight just immediately wants to sell.
    The answer for us is simple. Move more and find what works for you. I did this in December. Started trying to run and do little exercises every day, and eat right and I've lost 23lbs this year alone. This story has inspired me no end

    Thanks for sharing this, it's great the way Miles explains that you can only be accountable for yourself. My motivation is similar to his words in that the work we do that others don't see, in the early hours, in the rain and when we're not motivated are the things that should actually drive us on as humans. It's not a competition with anyone else but ourselves. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose, but we keep swinging....

    Mark, this is an absolutely amazing video. What Miles has done in that two years has been nothing short of monumental. This gives a lot of people hope. There was me worried about my present blip - but I went out this morning to do a long run, I turned up at the usual meeting place only to find nobody else there, due to the Scottish Masters Cross Country which my club was hosting. I was tempted to give up there and then but I ended up carrying on, on my own and ran/walked 8 miles. This has inspired me to make wholesale changes and get back on the wagon properly. Thank you.

    I'm the heaviest I've ever been and I'm sure my sons are sick of me starting a new diet only to fail again. I know it may sound insincere but it did inspire me. Wow the change in two years is amazing and I only need to lose 55 pounds. Time to get moving!

    "Stop making plans, and start making actions" - well said! I started losing weight recently for health, and I decided that instead of telling people "I plan to lose weight" before I did it, I would only allow myself to tell other people about it when I could truthfully say "I've lost 1kg" (or however much I'd lost at the time of saying it). This was a good motivation to push myself beyond the planning stage!
    Well done, I bet this chap's wife and children are so proud of their husband and father :)

    In Feb 18, I gave parkrun a go and it is now a part of my life.
    The great thing is that the distance from my home to my local run is also 5km.

    Thank you for sharing this video. I'm on my own journey to get back to a place of health. Sometimes my discipline wanes so some inspiration goes down very well. Keep up the great work on this channel.

    Great vid, very inspiring! I'm currently on the same journey (1 year in) gone from 26st to 19st, weight loss has slowed a bit over winter, I've found your channel very motivating, however thanks to you I've also discovered Doughnut Time so I can't help but think you are also part of the reason my weight loss has slowed 😂
