This is one of my favorite Disney scenes. It teaches the same lesson that was taught in another favorite Disney scene. You can't change what happened in the past, but you can change your present to make for a better future. What changed here wasn't just Basil "feeling sorry for himself". The plan only worked because Basil and Dawson worked together for the first time. Dawson trusted Basil to find the solution. Basil trusted Dawson to follow the plan.
I love how this scene demonstrates one of the advantages Basil has over Ratigan: He may not be more clever, but he *is* smarter. How else could he have escaped from the trap without a scratch?
i like to think that basil's "thank you, dawson" is double-ended. on the one hand it comes off as him thanking dawson for helping set off the trap, but another way to take it is basil thanking dawson for giving him the pep talk he needed to get out of the rut he dug himself into, and motivating him to save the day.
Basil is the best Disney hero there ever was! This scene was brilliant, showcasing the greatest traits of the two main mice in a fantastic moment of truth. This really needed its own series.

That is how villains lose 90 percent of the time. They have the opportunity to end their victims, but they toy with them too long and in the end it comes back to bite them.

Basil shouldn't just be the mouse equivalent of Sherlock Holmes, he should be the mouse equivalent of *Batman!* With Dawson being his Robin, Toby his lovable Batmobile and his maid being his Alfred.

That's the problem with villans, when the they have their enemy in a death trap he should stick around to make sure their enemy is dead or at least have guards to watch them die to confirm it.
Out of everything that happened in this scene, even the whole movie, the one thing that puzzles me even now is: How could all those mice lift up a super heavy anvil like that?
After Basil got his memory back thanks to Dawson. Basil and Dawson released the triggering mechanism at the right time then the gun shots at the crossbow then the axe cut the mousetrap avoid getting crushed by an anvil and the bottle shakes ane Olivia managed to break free from the bottle

The way this movie has amazing detective clue solving skills, engineering, maths, chemistry and so many other smart stuff...I miss this Disney...love a detective movie, love such a smart Disney detective movie even more!

@SuperTed19021 Me: They pulled the trigger before the ball did. Then, a clip hit the trigger, the bullet unleashed the arrow, the arrow sliced the axe in half, the axe cut them free, the anvil crushed the mousetrap and popped Olivia out, and that's how the picture came to be.
He believed Rattigan's trap was impossible to escape from until Dawson snapped him out of it and then getting him to *miraculously* sought a quick way to outwit the whole thing and escape (plus freeing Olivia in the whole process)!
Basil's entire investigation up to that point had been a setup by Ratigan. More specifically -- it had been what was called a Batman Gambit. A trap that works because of the victim's personality traits. Ratigan knew that Basil couldn't resist investigating the "case". So he had his henchmen leave fake clues to cause enough of a diversion to keep Basil out of their way until he was captured.
WTAF is Basil actually saying? My only bug about this movie. Modern Disney would have at least googled some Newtonian physics. WTAF is “the square root of an isosceles triangle”?! Not to mention the fluffed Latin name for a rat in the showdown at Buckingham Palace.
he's trying to calculate _Theta_ (represented by the symbol θ ) which is a relationship between an angle and the side of a triangle and involves square roots. here, he's _somehow_ able to calculate perfect geometric angles and distances simply by looking at his surroundings, and then correctly judges the weight and kinetic/stored energy of said surroundings to "predict" how all the traps' physics will play out; he then exploits this by having them cancel each other out.

Ratigan probably was gonna be there to watch it... but Basil were "15 minutes late". so Basil being "late" is what ended up saving him.
