I agree with you, the more you can do yourself, the more you're going to save. After all, the market price for topsoil has a markup, might as well you keep it instead of somebody else. I bought a 33k JCB backhoe to build our house on acreage, and I must admit, without that machine, all of the excavation, trenching, moving lumber, clearing the land, moving snow, landscaping, and grading would have cost me a fortune. The machine has paid for itself couple times over, and I learned a new skill. Win win. Cheers from Canada.
I used your video to help convince my boss to buy a screener last year. We have 5 lawn crews and a consistent supply of free dirt coming in to our yard. We went from a 6$ a yard expense to at least a 20$ a yard profit and ive made several hundred yards already this year. Your numbers are right in line with what im getting if not a little low considering how damp the soil you were using. Thanks for the video.
I have a little screener like this i bought for my landscape business. Its been a really good investment. I charge people to haul the dirt away from jobs we're doing, bring it home and screen it. I charge 365$ for 12 yards of top soil delivered and installed, in utah. Most of my work is in a 5 miles radius so its a profitable little addition to everything else we do.
Hi Carson! Great video and the new camera works great! No problem with the lack of videos, your business comes first! I just love seeing an energetic young man, not afraid of hard work!!! Take care Carson.....
Man I like it. We just have a old homemade one now I should make a video on. That looks like a awesome upgrade. We have so much leftover material we could reuse.
Mix the tallings into you compost and screen again next year. (No loss) Turn compost pile couple times a year during a rain storm to get moisture in to it . Charge in and out , topsoil business is a great money maker.
Hey man new subscriber love you're videos. Big Takeuchi fan to. I've been an operator for about the years. Not brave enough to go on my own and start my own gig. Just some advice tho, heap your piles up as high as you can get them and either tarp them or bucket pack it and smooth the pile so water runs off it. Also make a kick ramp to your screen so your higher up. Cuts your screening time in half.
This is a great video! It is so refreshing to see a bright, articulate, young person with an analytical mind who's still willing to roll up their sleeves to get the job done. The 10 'thumbs-down' I see from the naysayers are those morons who don't have a fraction of what you have going for you. Keep up the great work.
The dislikes are from the click bait title, this did not produce anywhere near $330/hour. He mentions it but after you factor in vehicle cost, drive time, man hours for load and screening there’s no profit here. Really the only money you’re saving is the cost of buying the material and getting the convenience of not having to rely on someone else for material.
Great video, I was looking at doing this type of thing next year. Gonna keep all the grass and leaves I collect from mowing everyday and compost it, then sell it next year
would it be worth installing a sunken feed conveyor and hopper? Then you'd have a steady feed into the screener & trucks could tip directly or you could use a dozer if the skid steers out on a job. you could also rig an outfeed conveyor for tailings and screened dirt.
dirt and compust is 2 different things. Dirt has clay and rock in it. compost is the black stuff that comes from leaves/grass. Need both compnents for a proper soil for planting lawns and such.
Topsoil screener is totally worth it. If you use roughly 220 yds per season at 20/yd, that’s 4400. Plus whatever you charge to deliver it to others or your own sites, say 6 dollars/yd. that’s another 1300 dollars in revenue. I’d say 5700 dollars coming in over the course of a construction season isn’t too bad. Those are super conservative numbers at that. Don’t let anyone tell you that you made a bad investment. #ShifskyLandscapes
Please explain more details why you need to do dirt screening? The dirt after screening is for foundation dirt? As I knew, if dirt quality is not good, it cannot be used as the foundation dirt. Is it the purpose you need to change the dirt quality to be higher quality dirt for foundation?
I was looking at past videos and seen all the different skidsteers and equipment how did u get started and got where u were to have all those different machines
Hey, Great video! Exactly the information I was looking for. What make of shaker were you using in the video? Seemed to be the same size and style I've been looking for
What is the name of that screener? I run a tree company and all my wood chips turn into dirt eventually. I've been thinking about screening and selling the dirt as a side gig. Great video!
Hey Carson, Loved the video. My old man didnt think there was a practical use to these machines. I just finished up making my first unit. Did you use a 3/4x4 screen the entire time with one pass through the unit?
I just bought a old used screen n been doing research about them. I paid $1000 for it, shouldn't take long to pay back. What size mesh do you recommend?
Hey Guy ! Im a French contractor in the excavations and i love your video so Much! I made vidéo in my UA-cam Chanel again :) I have one question; how much does a machine like that cost? Because I would like to buy one for my business and we dont have that in France.
A 6x8x4 pile is like 3x4x2 = 24 cubic feet or basically one cubic yard. And just by looking it looks like a cubic yard. I don't think you have 7 yards, I think you have about one there...
I just had 7 yards of dirt dumped on my driveway and it looks about the same. 1 yard is like 18 of the .75cf bags you get at a big box store...not very much
Yep I’ve seen that one! It’s a nice unit! I’d really be interested to see which ones more efficient! They both have a little bit different uses but it would still be a cool video.

Glad to hear that! That’s why we do the videos! Thank you for sharing I’m glad it’s working well for you!

Well worth the time! keep the moisture low in it and when lawn care and landscaping slows down in fall you can screen dirt!
The way I measure a pyramid of soil or bulk product is length x width x 1/2 of height ,works out perfect every time
Mix the tallings into you compost and screen again next year. (No loss) Turn compost pile couple times a year during a rain storm to get moisture in to it .

I have yet to turn in the rain but thats probably what is needed here.

Thanks!! That’s really good advice! One of these days when I get more space I’ll be able to set up a better screening operation

Grass and leaves makes great compost. Carbon and nitrogen. I think it’s great. A small compost turner would be great as well!
It keeps your machines and crew busy in down time
Smart, very smart young man. thanks !
Great video, I was looking at doing this type of thing next year. Gonna keep all the grass and leaves I collect from mowing everyday and compost it, then sell it next year
This young man is going to be well off someday
Great video. Thank you for taking the time to do this and all of your other videos.
Good to see a new video. Glad your doing good
Thanks!

Yes you are correct. The biggest key is to have a property that you can screen on.
Topsoil screener is totally worth it. If you use roughly 220 yds per season at 20/yd, that’s 4400. Thanks tyler! it wont keep up with the big boys but hell ya gotta start somewhere!
I think to convert square feet to cubic yards you divide by 27 NOT 37 as you said twice in your video. You said multiply by 37
You're an inspiration
Wait for a couple sunny days in a row. Spread it out the day before you screen. Much better!
Keep up the good work and great things could happen let's hope...

Basically just trying to get any larger debris out like rocks sticks etc. we use this dirt for planting beds seeding etc so the cleaner the better.
Awesome video! Thank you for the info
I'd still get one, thanks for doing the math for me 😁
Very welcome!
I was looking at past videos and seen all the different skidsteers and equipment how did u get started and got where u were to have all those different machines
A lot of the are rentals we currently only own 1 track loader one wheeled skid and one excavator
Hey,
Great video! Exactly the information I was looking for. What make of shaker were you using in the video? Seemed to be the same size and style I've been looking for
Old gas pro screen, I don’t think they make them anymore
What is the name of that screener? I run a tree company and all my wood chips turn into dirt eventually. I've been thinking about screening and selling the dirt as a side gig. Great video!
Great video brother keep up the awesome work
Hey Carson, Loved the video. My old man didnt think there was a practical use to these machines. I just finished up making my first unit. Did you use a 3/4x4 screen the entire time with one pass through the unit?
This has a 1' screen on it right now. My old man said the same thing!
Great video 👍
I just bought a old used screen n been doing research about them. I paid $1000 for it, shouldn't take long to pay back. What size mesh do you recommend?
Conveyor and hopper only way to go
Great channel and awesome videos! question what camera do you use to film with?
I think your right its worth it
Good content. Could get rid of that muzak and just have commentary over
Hey Guy ! Im a French contractor in the excavations and i love your video so Much! I made vidéo in my UA-cam Chanel again :)
I have one question; how much does a machine like that cost? Because I would like to buy one for my business and we dont have that in France.
Mètre Cube I just finished my first unit in 🇨🇦. We manufacture them. You can check it out if you like on my channel. $5,499 cdn dollars!
Josh DeVries oh cooool !
YEp check out josh's stuff! right around $5-6 us dollors is what they cost well worth the investment!

Why not just divide by 27 instead of *.037, its easier and more accurate
Plus the dump fees you save
What kinda camera did you get?
Cannon m50
Larry nassar used a Go Pro for his videos.
Interesting!
Thanks rick! It’s kind of a new are for us so cool to learn about how it all works and what you can do with it.
Carson, check out Andrew Camarata's you tube channel, he picked up a dirt screener that attaches to a skid loader. Love the video's keep them coming.
They know each other already.
Yep I’ve seen that one! It’s a nice unit! I’d really be interested to see which ones more efficient! They both have a little bit different uses but it would still be a cool video.
Where are you at that you can charge $150 an hour for a skid steer?????
Charging by the hour is for idiots.
$150 p/h for skid steer? Blimey
What kind of screener is that?
Pro screen unit. It’s probably from the 90’s honestly
or you bring it to the site
This is an option to however we usually dont have enough material on site to make it worth bringing out there.
Don’t make your videos for kids people can’t comment then
geezus, TAKE A BREATH
