Ya, busting knuckles is getting to be a problem with the UP. I was on the Coast Starlight and got stuck on the siding on the north side of Pengra Pass for five hours when they busted on in the middle of the first tunnel.
Well, six on the head end and three DP’d. Likely only two on the head were utilized and two of the DP’s. As an Engineer for BNSF the train orders specify which units to use. They move power around the network this way and send them to heavy maintenance facilities. Whenever I had excess locomotives I would always select dynamic braking on those unused units that had that option unless they were tagged OTS. I’ll take all the braking power I can get. The railroad’s power formula seemed to give us 1.1hp/ton.. This train, coming down the hill, was in dynamic and had air applied.. Don’t want to utilize air too much… BNSF Engineer (retired)
@@traceybonds8794 Yes all the locomotives including the three in the middle would be using air brakes and dynamic braking. Grade varies around 2% from the Moffat tunnel exit to pretty much flat land going to Glenwood Springs.
Which is better, 160 cars in 1 train or 80 cars x 2 or 40 cars x 4 ? For me, as a common driver, prefer the train is not too long cars. because the train will stop us for long minutes to pass at crossing... If the train 40 cars x 4 (in every 15 or minutes), it will give us to shorten delay...
Hi all, someone could give an educated estimate about the total weight of the train? Also is it more economical to connect the two trains?I mean seen locos on the middle and the end was empties.

Interesting, considering that UP supposedly hardly ever has any trains through Colorado. Just the Call Zephyr's supposed to be the only train through the region.
Yes there is slide fences. Slide fences are electrical wires that are strung back and forth between telephone poles that are sometimes over 20 feet high. If a rock breaks the wire then a red signal will stop the train.
What is the length of this monster train? How many bogies connected? It is a very long goods train. Approximately 5 Kms length seems to be. Please reply me the total length of this goods train.
Can someone explain this to me: these helper-locs in the middle, is there someone inside or are they controlled by some kind of 'remote control'? I live in Belgium. If a train like that comes trough my country, the locos are already in France while the cars at the back are still in Holland.
no, they look like tunnel power but is just coincidence, they are 1500hp late 70s yard switchers that could do road limited road service, cool little units
In 1949 I was 5 and my brother was 3. We lived near the railroad tracks which was used by an American logging co. My father was guard there. One day the American pres. of the co. drove by in his small rail car. I immediately took to the side and safety but my 3 yr old brother chose to run inside the track. The gringo blew his horn while stepping hard on his brakes. He managed to stop just two meters before the boy. Immediately all the women on both sides of the track erupted from their houses to rescue my brother, but the gringo was already out of his car cursing all hell. My brother has already died at 73 not being run down by a speeding train .
