I don't have much modern electronic music, but IMO, the Lintons sound best with classical and jazz (or well recorded music that doesn't sound too compressed or processed). They actually strike me as fairly neutral with a warm touch. I've noticed they are not always that forgiving with some harsher recordings of the '70s or even the '80s. Then the broad mid-range can be too exposing for certain frequencies, resulting with me quickly reaching for the volume knob. Note that this is just my experience. There are plenty of other people claiming that the Lintons make everything sound good. I guess we all have different ears.
I've also found them sounding much closer to neutral than I expected, but still pleasant to listen to. There's a definite edge to some frequencies that can make the midrange sound a little 'sharp' on some older recordings, but I also noticed a difference between amplifiers. I started with a Yamaha rxa2040 AV amp (140 Watts into 8 ohms apparently), and then a Leak 230 (75 Watts into 8 ohms). The Leak sounds twice as powerful and actually produces bass that matches the volume of the midrange. It now sounds fuller and more forgiving of older recordings.

It's been the standard figure forever. Driver size is measured as the outer total diameter of the whole basket. Cone size is different, and measured mid surround to mid surround.
I own the pair of Wharfedale Linton 3 speakers that my parents bought in aug 1974. The speakers and layout are totally (!) different than this modern version. I have always missed the high-end clarity, though they have a very rich bass and mid. Compared to other speakers I always found them sound rather dull. Since I lately obtained from friends an amplifier that was able to drive channels A and B simultaneously, I added a different pair of speakers with very clear tweeters, in order to compensate for the lack of these in the old Linton 3 speakers. This is a tad better soundwise, but there is no clear space definition of the sound image. As I have this setup in my barn where I have the space to put 2 pairs of speakers side by side (on a shelve), but this setup is limiting on the amplifier choice , which needs to be able to drive 2 speaker channels at the same time...
Guttenberg says the tweeters are a bit "grainy," or not as high resolution as he prefers. This guy likes the "smoothness" or "mellowness" of the treble.
Hi all, i ve got a pair o ve Linton s 85th and love them very much but i think there a little low on bass im wondering if its the amp or the speakers i got it hooked on a Mc Intosh ma 252 i would love response thanks!!

If that right speaker we see over your left shoulder is where you actually placed them for listening, no wonder they seem bass heavy. I bet it’s boomy af - and you’ll never get a proper soundstage or imaging when the speaker is crammed into a corner like that. Also the Uturn is DEFINITELY the weak link here. Those wharfedales and the evo 150 are leagues better than the table you’re using. What is that, an Ortofon OM-5??
I've noticed break-in on these speakers. I wasn't expecting any improvement, but hard edges on some midrange notes have disappeared and they're now nicer to listen to.
@@פרשתי-ש5פI didn't pay much attention to the exact time as I wasn't expecting any differences, but it took about a month, so perhaps 70-100 hours? It seems to only be getting better with time. You had to ask? I had that one in 2013. HIgher end NADs can drive two ohm loads, and even if that turns out to be an embellishment, it has highly sophisticated protection circuitry that will keep you from damaging the amp.
@@dan-qe1tb You had the same amp as me? Excellent, what did you think of it? I bought this set together with some speakers and to me it all sounds very thin. I don't have extra amps or speakers to swap around so I can't be certain where the problem lies; perhaps my speakers are just too lean sounding, or did you have this experience too with the NADs? Deep down my set does have reasonable bass, mid-bass quickly sounds a bit muddy, but the mids just sound too thin for me.
@@MarcelNL Yes I had blown it up trying to replace its cheap Chinese electrolytic capacitors, and ended up throwing it out in 2013 I believe. Not an easy board to DIY. It was a brute that he seemed like it was about power over finesse. 1980s NAD and Quad power amps I had used after had a warmer, smoother sound with less resolution. I don't think your thin midrange and muddy bass problems are about the amp but rather your speakers and where you had placed them.
I tried a NAD pre-power amp combo with Monitor Audio Silver 8s back in early 2015 and it also sounded thin in the midrange. Took the amps back and got a Yamaha RXA2040 instead and it sounded fuller, despite being a less powerful amplifier.
Anyone tried these for movies/tv ? I’m limited on space so I can’t have a dedicated tv system and a music dedicated system so it’s going to be doing both if I get a pair.
Sounds great for movies and watching the news, with vocals being clear and easy to understand even at lower volumes. However, get a decent stereo amp to ensure you have enough power to drive the woofer hard enough to provide enough bass for movies and music at louder volumes.
I don't have anything new from JBL to compare. I personally like certain things between the Lintons and the KLH 5, if I had to pick one it would be the Model 5.
I have a standard $500 A/V Receiver (100 watts a ch.....so we're told)....i'm just skeptical that these kind of huge 'power hungry' speakers will put to big a strain on your average A/V Rec'r.
I noticed a significant increase in bass volume going from a 140 Watt Yamaha RX-A2040 to a 75 Watt Leak 230 stereo amplifier. The Leak sounded twice as powerful!
Really want to get these Lintons to replace my B&W 603 towers in a two channel setup purely for music. I do like speakers/headphones that tend to be warmer.
Sound is subjective for everyone. For those who listen to music, most speakers will sound gud after they get used to the sound. I always laugh at reviewers who claim this or that, only cuz they try to listen to "sounds" and not "music. They sit in a chair perfectly placed and sit on pins and needles, never relaxing their rectums waiting for the slightest sounds...unlike 99% consumers who don't try to listen to every nuances of a fart.
Then this is the right speaker for you. These have a warm, lush, big sound to relax with. They aren’t very detailed, so you won’t have to wait for every detail or nuance. Not meant for critical listening.
Notice he never says the speakers sound good or really good. Decent. Just bought a pair.. I do like the sound. KLH 5 have more detail and better timbre. But I only have a hour or so on the Linton's. What I do luv about the Linton's is there very smooth and warm sounding. I will report back after 50 hours.

Is there any company out there that makes a speaker without out sourcing to China? I'm an Aussie DJ audio/visual engineer of some 30 years...I'm 61 now. It's a valid question. China are hardly popular on a global stage and aligning themselves with Russia and North Korea proves this. Wharfedale are an English company. Ok they have to follow the English standards of construction but when I saw Made in China on the back, I just felt a bit sad and sold out! Australia does not make any model of car! Period! No more Holdens or Fords and boy we made some serious V8 muscle cars in the 70s. This saving of cash is a cop out. Are they great speakers? Obviously....I own a pair of Wharfedale book shelf speakers but bit by bit I feel that every country is losing it's identity to what I call CHEAP CHINA SYNDROME! Ok so we might use parts from other countries like Japan but Japan make high quality components like resistors for example and sometimes you want Takmans in your signal path because they're great. Russia are, or should I say were making great new Valves for modern tube amplifiers. I hope this ridiculous war ends soon so that we can do business with them again cos they make great valves. Just not while Putin is in control. I own a Primaluna HP Integrated Amplifier running 6 12AU7s on the input side and 8 EL34s on the business end and it is a beautiful amplifier and my Wharfedale speakers sing when I play anything on them from Enya to Queen. I know it has foreign parts in it...DUH, but Kevin Deal still holds the reins and only uses the best parts sourced from all over the world each time he releases a new product under the Primaluna name. I haven't had the chance to listen to the Lintons, but I will when I get the chance. Cheers from down under, Andrew.
Terrible terrible speakers. Supremely marketed. The crossover and the tweeter are serious weakpoints. The flat, greyish, dull overall signature with a ringy treble/upper mid and a lack of transient attack renders these not only lacking musicality but also harshness in the lower treble and upper presence region. They also have pretty poor stereo imaging. A similarly or much lower priced pair of Focals wipe the floor with them.... proper in house drivers made by the actual maker for one thing.
So let me ask you this, if I designed and engineered a speaker in the US from top to bottom, but had it assembled overseas to save money on each unit so that way I could sell it at a reasonable price and still offer much value for what you are buying, or offer the same product, same quality at quadruple the price because I assembled it in the US, which do you feel is a better deal for the consumer? Where it's made has no bearing on where it's engineered and designed, nor does it impact the final performance of the product. People have this false sense that because it's assembled where it's designed its this pure blood product. Reality is, if people who like speakers want these companies to last the next 15-20 years, give them a break. They are still putting out quality products. The Linton's are phenomenal speakers and all you are worried about is where they were assembled. That's what is truly sad.
Are you talking about the cheap ones from Amazon I mention? There is more to it than the "electrical engineers" that love to troll like to admit. However I am all about quality not luxury. Luxury is where you cross over into the snakeoil territory.
@@audioarkitekts Hi was not trolling but there are laws of physics/ electrical theory that I have used all my life and speaker wires are not going to affect the output as long as the impedance is kept to a minimum . Phantastic speakers, pair well with my Croft acoustics amp. Great for classical and jazz
Damn I just bought one yesterday, the left one. I'll take it back.
I would love to A/B the Lintons with the Evo 4.2
I have an enormous amount of blues albums and cds as well as classical. Are they the right mix played through the Lintons. Very apreciative.Thnx.
Guttenberg says the tweeters are a bit "grainy," or not as high resolution as he prefers. This guy likes the "smoothness" or "mellowness" of the treble.
Guttenberg had a bad case of gut rot!! I have the Lintons and they blew away much more expensive speakers!!!
Can you recommend a pre amp and power amp combo that pair well with the lintons?
I bought mine last week.
Sweet! You're going to live them
Thank you! Very good information! I am a lucky owner of Larsen 6,2 wery amazing speaker 😊
It’s a beautiful speaker and stand.
I have the mahogany ones and they sound as they look....lush!
They are fantastic speakers
I had to check the date on this video... "the other day I saw kids sifting through vinyl" - yeah, 15 years ago. 😂
Hi all, i ve got a pair o ve Linton s 85th and love them very much but i think there a little low on bass im wondering if its the amp or the speakers i got it hooked on a Mc Intosh ma 252 i would love response thanks!!
I would hook up a subwoofer with these if you are looking for good low end bass
I have no idea about speakers... say I buy these speakers, can I power them from a chord mojo 2 and use the poly attachment to stream my Tidal for my playlists?
If not, what would I need? Could I get a full setup for like £2,500-£3000?
You are better off with a streamer/amp combo.and then use the mojo as a dac
Is all I'd need is say the NAD 3050C? Can I stream my tidal from my phone to that and be done? Add a sub as an extra if I want?@@פרשתי-ש5פ
Question: did you ever compared those to the KLH Model 5? I am curious between those…
Totally different type of speaker, however I do enjoy the Model 5 a bit better. 😀
Do you mean 39hz? Waterfall as a term usually means decay/ringing. I agree they make you smile, my only misgiving was bass definition but this was on floor models only open for two weeks.
Are they better than Oberon 3?
Thats a difficult comparison. However if I had to pick one I would select the Oberon 3 for many reasons, both aesthetically and sonically.
@@audioarkitekts wow so my speakers are still so good, thank you so much for reply, oberon 3 sound really good with marantz nr1711 in my 16m room, greetings from scotland✌️
Hey Mike welcome back! Had my eye on The Wharfedale Linton's for a while! Great review! Any other speaker stand suggestions?
Can anyone offer a comp between these and the kef r3’s? Really hard time choosing here
I agree these are meant for modern music paradoxically. Great speakers
I just ordered the lintons. I'm very concerned about it and thinking of canceling them. I've never seen so much disagreement in comments before over how a speaker sounds.
Don’t listen to the comments. You’re going to really enjoy them. At least try them out. If at that point you don’t like them, then return them.
@@audioarkitektsThank you for this. I currently have the UB52 bookshelves and they are nice with subs. But I do have some port noise annoyances with em on bass heavy tracks. Was looking for a solid all rounder that can keep up with classic and modern rock , and when certain people come over can beat the place down with hip hop if need be..
@@audioarkitektsNow I am flip flopping on black vs mahogany lol..
@@audioarkitektsHow do you feel about them in black?
How will these speakers perform on 16 in deep shelf? I don't have room to put them on the stands.
I do all testing in a different room where I can space them out. Thanks for the feedback though!
I don't believe in cables changing sound, I don't believe in breaking in, but I believe these are awesome speakers.
These speakers are awesome aren't they.
I've noticed break-in on these speakers. I wasn't expecting any improvement, but hard edges on some midrange notes have disappeared and they're now nicer to listen to.
@@Z4d0khi man.after how long did you hear the differences?
@@פרשתי-ש5פI didn't pay much attention to the exact time as I wasn't expecting any differences, but it took about a month, so perhaps 70-100 hours? It seems to only be getting better with time. How much is a change in the speaker and how much is a change in my expectations, I can't say. However, the edge to some midrange notes isn't drawing attention to itself anymore and bass is sounding fuller. Either way, I'm happy :)
Do you happen to know the thread size and length for the spiked feet that the stands come with?
I don't off the top of my head, it looked standard though.
Why is it important to have the stands? Cant I just put some acoustic pads underneath for a similar effect?
Yes
Personally, looks are way down there when evaluating speakers. I'm going to try them when I decide on a streaming amp.
Anyone know how these would compare to Rogers L6 speakers from the 80’s? I bought them and use them with my Leak stereo 130 and keep wondering how my system would sound with these instead…
I believe you have the speakers switched in this video. The Logo on the left is the left speaker and the logo on the right is the right speaker.
I may have swapped the grilles.... not sure lol
Wharfdale have the secret british key . designed many years ago...
A different dimension, The Twilight Zone. Still miss flippin' through album bins, now a major portion of recorded music is download only ! No physical format !
Great review! Thanks 😀
You're Welcome
Any comparison with emotiva t2+ ?
They have now just revamped the wharfdale dovedale 👍
Once again out of the park. Along w/ a cold dog & a warm beer 😆 lol. Oh I would love to own british speakers 🔊 wharfedale rogers kef harbeth splendor almost all go back to the BBC school of speaker engineering.
I love your ironic ending 😂
I do this all for you guys! lol
I just Loooove mine.
Love the Sschiit setup !
I miei Linton pilotati da un Yamaha A-S1200 cantano in modo divino!
Gli ho associato un Bluesound Node X e...sono felice
fantastic rview my friend
Thank you good sir
These are 6 ohms. In the manual of my NAD C275 BEE I see that it can handle 4 or 8 ohms. Will my amp drive them well?
Yessss.they are great!!!!!
Listening to someone that puts these speakers not even an inch from the wall. Remember they are back ported. Excuisit sound???
Dont forget there is no such thing as the perfect speaker...
How do they compare to the klh 5 or a jbl
I don't have anything new from JBL to compare. I personally like certain things between the Lintons and the KLH 5, if I had to pick one it would be the Model 5.
Thanks I have a older nad monitor series amp of 50w pc I wonder how model 5 would sound
@@toneswinger I power my model 5 with a Cambridge EVO 150 and it does just fine
I have a standard $500 A/V Receiver (100 watts a ch.....so we're told)....i'm just skeptical that these kind of huge 'power hungry' speakers will put to big a strain on your average A/V Rec'r.
I noticed a significant increase in bass volume going from a 140 Watt Yamaha RX-A2040 to a 75 Watt Leak 230 stereo amplifier. The Leak sounded twice as powerful!
I'm running them with a 27wpc receiver from 1978 and they play beautifully
😂😂😂
Notice he never says the speakers sound good or really good. Decent. Just bought a pair.. I do like the sound. KLH 5 have more detail and better timbre. But I only have a hour or so on the Linton's. What I do luv about the Linton's is there very smooth and warm sounding. I will report back after 50 hours.
Notice at the end he says they sound "GREAT".
Aren't Lintons cheaper than KLH? KLH are uglyass tho.
Hi Todd, now that you have more hours, what are thoughts about the Linton versus the KLH 5?
so how did your Lintons work out for you?
@andrehendrik apparently they blew out his eardrums and he passed into another dimension. 😢
Not sure that your mate Adam's setup is much good, he's shoved the Linton's rear ports right up against the wall!
The speaker cables give you a bit more bass?…. Ok
Kids don't like the old stuff because it's a cool fad. They like it because unfortunately they are growing up in post modern dystopia and when they hear the good stuff on good equipment, they love it. I
Is there any company out there that makes a speaker without out sourcing to China?
I would prefer the Linton´s in a more modern package. Not all people like retro looks.
I'm getting tired of grill-off people. it screams 'i was a poor in a 90's trailer park' vibe
Those are very specific albums they like, ugh. Ok.
The cables accentuated the bass..? That's when I hit stop moved on to another video.
The great British speakers made in China like many so-called British loudspeakers. Quite sad really!
@@audioarkitekts I have them and though they are the cheapest speaker i own,I feel they are incredible!!!
Wharfedale Linton , made in China? 😒😒😁😁
I watched up until you mentioned speaker cable !!!!!!!!! Jeez man ! .Do some electrical theory ..................... Snake oil cables
I wish you well . Nice low impedance well terminated copper conductor are all that is necessary
