Oh yeah, that's the shit right there. The change-over is the most awesome sound in all of motorsports. If it doesn't give you goosebumps then you must be dead inside.
And GOD said "Let there be NITRO!" And GOD smelled the NITRO and HE said it was good... And on the seventh day GOD shouted SUNDAY!!SUNDAY!! SUNDAY!!! And top fuel drag racing was born...
10 years the video was posted and this video remains one of the best UA-cam dragsters videos. The sound of this idling engine is a spectacle. Very good audio quality. This video goes to my playlist.
It starts on methanol to warm up, that the pump for nitromethane is switched on and he disconnects the hose for the methanol. The black hose you can see when it iddles in the beginning.
@larry ballard That's actually incorrect they start nitro motors on methanol or alcohol to get the engines up to temp. Nitro while burning is volatile it wont run unless under a fair bit of temp and compression. So they get the cylinders warm first before feeding the nitro in.
I was on a team in the 80's, and I never fail to smile as I look at the Jack-stands as we weaned it off of alcohol to Nitro, and the rear-axle started jumping around. That's when you know it's for real.😁😂
deadboy600 thats great in all but apparently Chrysler made the combo work. Although depending on what is being attempted still might not be the best option. My father in law raced top fuel funny car for a major beer company in the day. Not a complete sponsorship but lots of cash regardless. He was only a Chevy guy. Long story short I bought a 71 Cuda 440. Knowing that at that point a non hemi derived motor had not qualified in top fuel for more than 10 years, so I set in to destroy him. He didn’t like me either. I mentioned this fact to him only to have his mechanic step up. He says you know why the use hemi engines? Because they breath well. I said oh, ok. The argument was ended by his own team. Bottom line is they all make cool engines and cool cars. If someone hates a ford Chevy or mopar than really they are pretty stupid. Some things work better than others. Some are just cool and don’t work worth a shit. But in the end cars are cool whoever made them.
You just start smiling. And you don't really have control over it. You just keep smiling... Big. This is the primary effect of the alcohol fading to nitro.
Those wheelmen who sat behind those behemoths back in the day are the gutsiest and bravest men on earth. Thank God Big Daddy sorted it out and finally put the drivers in front of those fireballs.
to warm up the cylinders...if you start it up on nitromethane, the engine would blow up like dynamite....engine has to be a certain temp before turning valve over to nitromethane!
I have seen even new Top Fuel Dragsters need to start on alcohol before switching to nitro. Of course they only need 25 seconds while this needed 2 minutes, but still...
Gotta love the sound change when they switch it to Nitro at 2:04 and it really comes alive. Nice car. definitely the way to build a vintage sling shot if your going to build one.
don't ever break that camera or get rid of it. when someone asks you why the hell you are using a camera that old, put this video on and crank it right up for them. truly awesome!
love how the sound of the engine changes at 2:10 to 2:20, it goes from a steady rumble of a tame engine to the en-even, pop, crackle, and bang of a fire spitting, pissed off nitro engine full of kick ass
Back when I was just out of high school some friends and I ran a '72 Duster with a 440 and TF 727 trans. We mixed our own fuel. It worked. But damn it was strong. A 55 gal. drum with a non-removable top containing 25 gallons of 93 octane pump gas,20 gallons of 110 octane race gas and 5 gallons of Toluene. We called it the "witches brew".
I played with toluene too! Boosted cars love it, o2 sensors commit suicide lol. Look at it wrong get cancer. We went 1 gallon to every 10 of 93. Toluene and other exotic stuff was used in racing as an octane booster in many racing series including F1.

@@perfectcell7995 No. I know what that was. I was referring to a hose or a cord with a connector on the end. He disconnects it at 2:07 long after the engine is running.
What a trip back in time! We never once dreamed that what was so 'cutting edge' racing to us, and so right at the front in building horse power and speed, would one day be referred to as 'nostalgic'. You can bet, if the family sedan just happened to be a big Chrysler, when it came time for a new family car we'd be trying to talk daddy into letting us have it! I think you can see why... Since coming across this vid, I can't stop watching it and sharing it. I guess it's because this was the zenith of the early days of Nitro, where you relied on your eyes, ears, nose and hands to know what was going on.
