      hey could you explain this? so they start with gas and switch to nitro?

    • @mightress
      @mightress 5 років тому +33

      It starts on methanol to warm up, that the pump for nitromethane is switched on and he disconnects the hose for the methanol. The black hose you can see when it iddles in the beginning.

      @larry ballard That's actually incorrect they start nitro motors on methanol or alcohol to get the engines up to temp. Nitro while burning is volatile it wont run unless under a fair bit of temp and compression. So they get the cylinders warm first before feeding the nitro in.

      deadboy600 thats great in all but apparently Chrysler made the combo work. Although depending on what is being attempted still might not be the best option. My father in law raced top fuel funny car for a major beer company in the day. Not a complete sponsorship but lots of cash regardless. He was only a Chevy guy. Long story short I bought a 71 Cuda 440. Knowing that at that point a non hemi derived motor had not qualified in top fuel for more than 10 years, so I set in to destroy him. He didn’t like me either. I mentioned this fact to him only to have his mechanic step up. He says you know why the use hemi engines? Because they breath well. I said oh, ok. The argument was ended by his own team. Bottom line is they all make cool engines and cool cars. If someone hates a ford Chevy or mopar than really they are pretty stupid. Some things work better than others. Some are just cool and don’t work worth a shit. But in the end cars are cool whoever made them.

    Since coming across this vid, I can't stop watching it and sharing it. I guess it's because this was the zenith of the early days of Nitro, where you relied on your eyes, ears, nose and hands to know what was going on. You are intimate with the engine instead of relying on telemetry from an on board computer to know what to do the next time. What is it telling you, do you respond in kind? Absolutely got to love it if you understand that level of expertise.

    I grew up watching those race. Ashame when they outlawed them. Blower wasn't strapped down and when the engine blew. Well, bad news for the driver.

      The NHRA heritage series still runs top fuel with front engine dragsters (Nostalgia Top Fuel). Blower restraints are mandatory but the design isn't outlawed.

      Pro-Series Fabrication they do but i saw where the frames are also heavily modified. These older ones would bounce all over the place, pretty dangerous but they did it.

    Bad ass Hemi of yesteryears. Love that sound. The ultimate V 8 ever produced even at present days its still a Hemi making up to 8000 to 10000 HP. All still goes back to Chrysler engineering.!!!!! Oh yeah

    @ITS4390 No, it's not carburated. It's mechanical fuel injection. They didn't adjust any fuel flow either, they simply switched it from running on alcohol to running on nitro methane. You can't start those engines cold on nitro.

  • @ReadTheShrill

    I love that sweet sound of the switch from alcohol to nitro. Alcohol is strong, nitro is just crazy.
    Alcohol: "Yeah Johnny! Let's go man!"
    Nitro: "RAAAAAWWWRI!!! KILL!! KILL!! KILL!!!"
    Nitro just wants to rip it's way out of that engine by whatever means necessary.
