Shadow Warrior brought me to Japan ... in Duke Nukem I went to the moon - and it still feels familiar when I look at the moon to this day. Another time I was driving a BMW in one of the Need for Speed games and I pulled the car over into a gas station to get away from the police, and instinctively I reached down to find the shift lever to put the car in neutral. Then all the AVP games brought me closer to the franchise than could be considered "healthy".

The Zul'Drak area in World of Warcraft-Wrath of the LIch King expansion was one of the best stories. For me personally, I think it's because there's an end to TV shows, movies, and books. They're not as large of a time-sink for that reason. Multiplayer is where the "waste" enters the picture. I'm one of those people who can play a game 8 hours straight, and I always feel like a huge piece of shit afterwards. Therefore I go through phases where I quit gaming all together, and I've been in one of those phases for a little over a year now. It's like heroin to me. Don't even get me started on World Of Warcraft...played for 2 years and almost ruined my marriage. It's fun in the moment, but there is that nagging feeling that you've wasted so much time.

Before I met my wife, single player story driven games were my primary source of no guilt entertainment. I didn't watch TV at all. Frankly TV shows (especially sitcoms, dramas, etc.) were what I viewed as a complete waste of time. I was interacting with the game and really had to pay attention in order for the story to continue. Now with my wife I have responsibilities, so I give myself 2-4 hours in the morning or night on the weekends. I don't do it on the weekdays because I know I'll stay up too late. But I think it's a good compromise. She loves Mario and fighting games so I'm always playing those with her from time to time. Just like any hobby or entertainment you watch, can't do it all the time.

I honestly think the 'would you kindly' twist in Bioshock is kinda bullshit... Because in any other storytelling medium, there's more scrutiny.
In a movie, if the plane crash lands in the exact spot in the middle of the ocean where the entrance to Rapture is, immediately you'd be suspicious and think 'okay, that's not a fucking coincidence.' But in a first person shooter, the expectation going in is 'it's a shooter, don't think too hard about it.' It's a game first and a storytelling medium second, and so the expectation of decent storytelling is low.
You'd see it coming a mile away if you're looking for it.
