It's a hard sci-fi with extraordinary technology such as newmatter and fancy spaceships, but I found all those things to be more believable than the Thousanders being atheists. I mean, come on! You develop, through your consciousness, the ability to jump to another timeline / narrative / parallel universe, and communicate via dreams, but you still cling on to atheistic materialism? Naaaahhh... Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. And like you, I also used ChatGPT from time to time - especially when I sensed Stephenson was referring to an Earth phenomenon in Arbre terms. I wanted to check if ChatGPT thought what I was thinking. You're right in saying that ChatGPT is a useful reading companion. It came specially handy when I was reading Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun where the language can be very flowery and cryptic at times.
Amazing review! Loved the book.
