Skimming a motorcycle brake drum with wheel on bike.

  • The front Brake on the Performance Classics Royal Enfield 350 race bike needed attention, as the drum was very slightly out of perfect 'round', meaning the brake, although pretty good, was not giving its best. An old, worn brake shoe was covered with some emery cloth and fine grinding paste and fitted to the brakeplate. Then, it was just a matter of adjusting the brake until contact was just being made with the 'high spot' in the drum and spinning the wheel quickly. this set up seemed to work quite well ...

That's how we used to do it, but by spinning the wheel by hand. This certainly gets the job done a sight quicker 👍

And why not indeed. Slightest whiff of HSE appearing, hide the mule and try to look nonchalant.

I need to do something like this to my 1983 xl600r rear drum its pathetic. No one around me does motorcycle drum turning and I live in Detroit.
How did you attach the Emery cloth?

I glued the emery cloth over one of the linings. I made another video where I use grinding paste on an old set of brake shoes, which worked very well, too.

But, when you do this, portion of the drum where the brake shoes touch the drum, will only be grinded, will make a dig of 1.5" or so...

Only the high spots in the drum make contact if this is set up right and they are ground away, making the drum surface even again. takes a bit of time, but it works.

Paul Henshaw and skill to do it right, trouble is people watch a master at work and forget how much your sensing through feel, heat and smell. A master always make the task look easy.

I fine tuned the method after this. Use old brake shoes, as they may get spoiled while doing the job, with fine grinding paste for very slight out of round, coarse for more serious cases, no emery needed. When finished, clean the drum out thoroughly and fit the shoes you intend to use and the job is done.
This machine went on to win the 2018 BHR pre 63 350 Championship and set a new lap record for this class on Anglesey, breaking the old record 3 times in one race!

Did you make the quick jack, or can one be bought? If so, from whom?

That is commonly known as a 'Paddock stand' - they can be had for front and rear and can be used together, if needed. M&P in Wales probably stock them and may have supplied some of ours [my Brother gets all the racy stuff], but they should be easily available, I should think.

Found it. Thanks Paul. Made by an outfit called Biketek. They are calling it a head stand, but it’s, for sure, the one you are using here.
