If you get the option, choose this boat! When its flying on the foils it is an extremely stable platform, like open drink containers in rough seas. This is the most comfortable boat I have ever been on, zero seasickness on passengers when other craft are hurling their guts out.
This Boeing/Kawasaki Jetfoil High speed Ferry boat uses the principle of lift of its foils underneath the Hull. The jet turbine engines provide thrust as the ferry accelerates, the Hull is lifted upwards. as demonstrated.
It is turbine powered, but not 'jet' turbine; there is no propulsion provided by jet exhaust. The engines drive water pumps like in a modern specialty ski boat. Water is drawn up through the rear struts and fed into the water pumps.
Once upon a time I did a temp assignment with Boeing's BMS while it was experimenting with the 'foil. Boeing's great to work for. Lotsa congeniality. Unfortunately, my assignment ended while this program was in development.
John Martle Try again. The concept was first experimented with in Italy. what is considered the first real hydroplane was built by none other than Alexander Graham Bell. Yes the same guy credited with the telephone. And they both were invented in Canada. Try a Google search before waving the flag.
Took one of these from Hong Kong to Macau in the 80's or 90's and I remember the flight? 😁 time as 1 hour 15 minutes, rather than the 45 minutes mentioned elsewhere. The remarkable thing was the soporific effect it had on the passengers. We were sat at the front and 15 minutes after departure I looked back, and everyone, but everyone was asleep. Are they still running I wonder? Or have they gone the same way as everything else and the evil accountants have got their claws on them?
Just got back to business as usual after the border reopening in HK and MAC post covid. It takes more than an hour to/ from hk airport. But less than that to/ from Sheung Wan.
Wise Fool VR speed 35km/h, V2 speed 45km/h. If the speed generates enough lift, the boat will float above the sea. So they don't use V speeds and Jetfoil is not an airplane. Just for you to know the speed was during take off.
Thank you. I was well aware about the airplane bit but nothing else so thanks again, needed some ball park numbers for a uni design report but my intuition was on the right sort of lines anyway. Thanks again :)
How am I 28 and never seen one of these until today!!? Wow!! So cool!!!
Got plenty more jet taxi large jetski. Save the best for them SELF. Sell us the leftover
its way older than you.
Hydrofoils are operated since 60s. Back then they were more common, especially massively used by USSR and their partners.
Same here I'm 29 just found out about these. Googled it and Boeing makes these since 1974 when they were researching different systems.
I’m 49 and was lucky enough to ride on one from Seattle to Victoria bc when I was in 2nd grade

totally agree...
start watching at 2:00. you are welcome
Closer to 2:40
Miles Williams yep. I got caught up watching it idle in ten seconds. I guess my attention span is short too.
@I Am Sekou is editing that hard?
It has two Allison 501-KF turboshaft engines which generate a combined 10,600 shaft horsepower. The jet pumps were built by Rocketdyne.
Cool info

It was a fantastic ride from Hong Kong to Macau , it's awesome 👏 👏👏
Wonderful i rode this Boeing from korea to japan
It really struggles to get up out of the water, fighting so much drag - then once the hull is up it really goes!

It is quite loud but a very comfortable ride once it get up, no pitching.
We onece got upgraded to the cross channel Jet foil. The sound of the engine during 'take off' is awesome.
This technology was invented in U.S.A!

Would make one helluva party boat.
good for using a drug boat in mexico
@@winnxithepoo yeah one of the loudest vehicles in existence would make a great drug mule. Ffs
I rode on one of these in Hawaii years ago. They called them SeaFlite.

Where does it go to and from where
I want one.
wow!!!
That's got to be dangerous
nah ran for at least 10 years 30 mins from hong kong to macau
now, that's faster than a legless midget crawling at full speed
This is fast. Does it plan to take off in the air at some point? Awesome.
it generate less friction, require less fuel and yes, it is fast for a ship this size
Wie schnell in km/h?
+Jörg Werner 43-47 knots (80 km/h)
What sort of speed is needed to take off (I'm assuming it accelerates a fair bit after takeoff so I'm not looking for max or average operating speed)

i plane at 18kts and run at 45kts so i could beat this thing in my tiny 18.25 footer. lol.
@@ysesq Not with 250 passengers you couldn't.

@@johnmartle7305 wrong!!!!
Seems like it gets terrible mpg
Will Riley True. Crusing at 43 knots cost you 2150 litres of fuel.
Will Riley Every bit of water kicked up is evidence of drag. Look just forward of stairs / ladder...
Cash Show hat mich geschickt
Is it a plane?????
BEST PILOT Kind of. See the brand at the back? BOEING.
