This was my RTS of choice back in the day. I loved Red Alert before that, but there was something about KKND2 that captivated me in a way no other RTS could. The music was great, the lore was engaging and the visuals were definitely the coolest in my mind. Great review :)
Always great to hear about another person's appreciation for KKND2, so thank you for sharing your thoughts with us! I did my best to capture the spirit and feeling of the game experience in one video, so I'm very glad that you enjoyed it!
Man those 9 tracks, they are FUCKING LEGENDARY. I played this game while I was messing around on my dad’s computer when I was still in elementary school. Being a young, Chinese kid who just looks at the little men and bugs and tanks in the game, I really didn’t understand much of what was happening in front of me, if at all. But those soundtracks, they struck a chord with me on a certain weird level, I thought it was THE greatest sound I’ve heard ever for some reason. Now, 20 years later, the game just popped into my mind for some reason, bought it on GoG, played it, all the memories came back, just like the old days. And after training hard obtaining a masters degree in classical piano, producing for more than 4 years, creating music for commercials, games, arranging songs written by singers, listening to this game’s music again made me realize, the 9 year old me was completely correct. These ARE the GREATEST sounds I’ve ever heard, and will remain up there for a very, very long time, if not forever.
That's quite the inspirational little story you have there. Very nice to hear that such a cool game's audio managed to positively impact you on multiple levels. They really are some of the more unique sounding tracks around in various respects, and definitely complement the game's theme incredibly well, so thank you for sharing your thoughts and reminding us of the music's magic!
Happy to be of service and provide a video to fill the void. I'd encourage you to make a video as well, if you feel a strong desire to do so in your own way.
I love KKND 2. My only gripe with it is that survivors get an incredible advantage in later game. Remember the custom-made vehicles? One of them can teleport a whole army a second into the future and slightly damage it. But if you have two or three of these devices, you can pretty much delete all opposition without them getting anywhere close enough to fire a shot. The other two factions don't have this ability.
Back then, RTS games were still sort of being figured out and the asymmetry brought more flavor to each play style. This has its advantages and disadvantages, even to this day, and you can see the factions more or less decently mirrored in a lot of cases to compensate. Although some things may have slipped through the testing cracks - games are sometimes slightly wilder beasts to tame in ways that don't dig into creative expression too much, when talking about such interactive mechanics.
LMAO. The only way to take on 7 XTREME AIs. If you tell them to attack themselves you can get a rhythm going where nothing can touch them. Almost as OP as the UFO XD
Very nice review. Growing up this was the 2nd RTS game I played and loved it until today. Awesome narration and I can see you put in a lot of efforts into the scripts.
Your words are very much appreciated. It's a good encouraging feeling to know that you enjoyed the video, so thank you for sharing some of your thoughts about it!
Man you got really cerebral in the last third, really appreciated that. The essence of 'just talk it out' is under-used in a lot of media. Great video mate!
Nice to see I’m not the only one who remembers and appreciates this game. I happen to receive this game by a stroke of luck when my grandmother bought it for me from a local Woman’s yard sale back in 98 or 99 I believe. I absolutely fell in love with the gameplay, the lore, and most importantly in my eyes, the phenomenal soundtrack. More specifically, the survivors three tracks. I swear to this day I’ll catch myself singing that jazzy tune, or the amazing guitar riff in those tracks , it’s just that iconic music you never forget about from your childhood games, and KKND2 Krossfire was definitely one of them. Really wish they would’ve continued this series at some point, but it is what it is. Atleast we have the memories to hold on to for the rest of our lives 🤘
It's quite an odd experience in a very positive sense, amazingly held together with how the music sets the tone of it all as both sadly apocalyptic, and yet still light-hearted and cool, as if the game knew that it was a game and just wanted to be one of the cooler ones. :P You're definitely not the only one with such fond memories of KKND2, as a quick glance at this video's comment section should confirm!
I bought the PS1 version fresh off the shelve at an electronics store in Iceland when I was a kid, I am very thankful that I did. It's one of those games that was only released in Europe on PS1, I feel that it was a huge mistake not releasing it in America as well.
@@humanice2 Some PS1 games even had differences with regards to their region of release as well, like different voice actors in the UK and the US releases (Gex 3, for example). Point being that we can't control that side of the equation. But we can do our best to acquire the games either around the time of release, or much later on, even a decade or two later in various forms. It's very cool to hear you grabbed the game officially just as it came out and had that original experience!
@bedfordshiremodeller4491 I played the PS1 version initially. It was harder to control things and you had to group units via special selection menus (as one example). It felt ok for the time, albeit complicated, but I was also very young. The PC version feels much easier to manage.
I know the game doesnt have deep lore but in the first game KKND (extreme) it was told that the evolved at first welcomed the symmetrics(survivors) which played along for a moment and then stabbed the muties backs as soon as they learned about their rich Oil Deposits (which is holy for the evolved called ,,Earth Blood") and since then basically an eternal blood feud was born as far as i see it the survivors are the ,,bad" guys as for the muties they are not big Fans of forgiveness and since then deeply hate anything that is a ,,symmetric" and go on crusades to kill all humans because the symmetrics will bring forth the scourge (nuclear apocalypse)
The series definitely does have supporting lore, but it's held as secondary and is often a bit overlooked compared to the action and humor that is front and center. Thanks for bringing this point up, as the world of KKND is richer than some players might think!
i'm one of the very few who spent time on this back in the old days, while everyone was walking it out with command&conquer and warcraft2. i play those too, but my heart was set on krossfire. love to get me up on that high ground and catch the enemies walking below. they won't know what hit them, until they start sending in those flying things. i love the custom parts on the machines at the machine shops, the tech bunkers, and the tacky briefings at the beginning. good fun game and awesome review!
Thanks! KKND 2 certainly had a special charm which made it stand out to those looking for something a little different. C&C might have greatly overtaken it in terms of quantity and popularity, but that doesn't make KKND 2 any less valuable of an experience with its own cool strenghts.
i still listen to the soundtrack to this day :D i love how the three factions have their own musical flavour, the humans have their industrial and metal themes, the robots have their dance/EDM vibes, and the mutants have 'freaky jazz' XD
Thank you, I'm very glad and grateful to hear you enjoyed it! I first came across the game on the PS1 as well. Back then you often had to group units to move them around effectively if you recall, wasn't as forgoving as with a mouse and keyboard. And the PS version also had some different skirmish maps to play as well.
In ps1 version the number of armies are maxed to 3 players. Not to mention player 2 can't have different army to player 3. Player 1 is always blue, player 2 is always red and player 3 is always yellow. Unless you're playing campaign.
@@SkorvionGames Thank you very much! One question though: I can't find the full soundtrack on UA-cam, just the themes. Where can I find, for example, the track that is played in your video at the very end (the one that sounds very "jazy")? I would love to listen to that full soundtrack again.
@@SkorvionGames Oh and by the way: I really loved your philosophical words about the getting along-thing. Never thought that philosophy and KKND 2 would be compatible. My tow brothers, woho are twins and often try to anger, provoke or tease each other, sometimes cite these words ironically: "Nein, manche kommen einfach nicht miteinander aus" (german version of "no, some groups just don't get along").

@@michaelm.4618 Ah, glad you liked that little philosophical addition! I do my best to pull out useful context out of any game and such experience, because I've learned a lot by thinking in various ways about the content and media that I experience, especially interactive ones like games, no matter how simple or just for fun it might seem at first glance. Value can be pulled from anything, with the right context and multi perspective thinking in mind. I'm very glad you found that a worthy addition, as it's something I like to pitch in any video if applicable. :)
Lovely video, I loved KKND as a kid :) true, the soundtrack is just fantastic. But I have a problem with GoG edition... Sometimes during missions I randomly get "Mission Failed" and then it gets stuck. Any videa how could I fix that?
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! Check the video description. I've already written some information in there on how to solve certain known issues such as the one you have encountered. Hope it helps!
The game is not "dead" to my understanding. You can play it even today - as of relatively recently through platforms such as GOG and Steam. There can be some known issues and bugs on modern systems however, for which we have certain workarounds and fixes. So feel free to revisit it whenever you feel like it!

Wao tengo 31 años y sin exagerar eres el único comentario de otro peruano, yo también recuerdo con nostalgia los días en los que solía jugar kknd y kknd 2 en mi vieja Pentium. Yo también soy de Perú, saludos.
I don't think I'm properly qualified to say, because I haven't played the first game enough to have a good sense of how they compare in that sense. So I'm afraid I don't have any useful insight on that note as of yet. To me, KKND 2 feels faster paced with units dying quickly, so it might be a more intense feeling than the first game perhaps.
The cauterizer is and always will be the coolest unit in any RTS ive ever played. In fact the series 9 is just a cool concept in of itself, because old angry farming robots with old repurposed technology is cool.
Such a sense of lighter dark humor is what gives the game its lasting charm. And I agree that the Series 9's Cauterizer is a very cool unit to move around and zap things with.
Evolved in KKND2 looks too ugly compared to prequel. I wanna see Evolved Infantries'design in Remastered quailty, especially Homing Bazookoids and Mekaniks.
@@tomvhresvelg9286 As the original had FMV cutscenes with actors, they felt more human. The sequel uses animated models with voice overs instead, so they feel more mutated and non-human by comparison. It's not that far fetched, as I'd imagine the Evolved have a wide range of mutant-looking people in their ranks - some "uglier" than others, by relative human aesthetic standards. Fallout mutants are a good example.
@@tomvhresvelg9286 It would be cool to see! As a side note, there is an unofficial fan project that is modernizing both KKND games called OpenKrush. It's the closest thing I've found to "new" KKND besides potentially modded content. Might be worth checking out if you're curious: www.kknd-game.com/

Glad to hear you had so much fun with the game! I originally discovered and played it on the PS1 as well, and had similarly exciting splitscreen experiences. :P
What issues have you run into? The current GOG version has some bugs, yes, but there are also a few workarounds to some of them. As for the Steam version, I have no experience with it yet - but it's an option you can perhaps try out as it lists Win10 as one of the OS under system requirements. Oddly enough, there are statements floating around that the original CDs sometimes play well on Win10, but I haven't tested any of those claims myself, so can't confirm.
@@SkorvionGames the mission failed message apears after some time in the missions. I've seen other people complain about the same thing. I don't know if the gog fixed this error but the game was unplayable, I just couldn't finish the stages
@@dennesalcantara980 The GOG version is a bit flawed, possibly due to code errors or conflicts with modern systems. That being said, there are 2 big issues you can run into while playing. Only one of them being the one you described, but it might help to use both solutions together. How I usually manage to fix them on the GOG version is as follows: 1st - the random UNABLE TO BUILD UNIT bug. You will sometimes run into this message popping up in the middle of your screen and halting your game progress. This is not due to you reaching the maximum amount of units you can have, but just an error of sorts. A possible solution to this is to set the game to start using "Windows 98 compatibility mode" via the game's shortcut properties on your desktop. I usually apply this change as soon as I install the game, and the bug just mostly stops happening. So generally on your desktop, you can right-click your game shortcut icon, go to its Properties, and under Compatibility set it to always run in Win98 mode, or an equivalent process depending on how your computer is set up. 2nd - the random MISSION FAILED bug. This happens after a certain time has passed during a mission. Let's say 30mins, for example. Look at it as a corrupted save game instance. If you try to save 60secs before the 30min mark in game, your game will still freeze and give you a failed mission state like every other time in that moment on that specific run, so you can't extend that fictional time to the bug. Your game instance is on a countdown to failure - think of it as if it is "sick" and only has 30mins to live, or however long it appears to have when it happens. There is no way to detect if it will fail from this "sickness" in advance, but In order to fix it (once it does happen) you need to "cure" your game instance. A possible solution is to SAVE your game to a save slot (before the mission failed bug happens), reload that very save game again, and then SAVE IT AGAIN (after reloading!!) but to a completely DIFFERENT save slot. After that, reload it from that NEW different save slot. This solution usually works for me as if I have "cured" the game instance from a "sickness" by giving it a fresh new save copy, to put it as colorfully as before. There is still no way to know when this might happen, so just get into the habit of saving your game every 20mins or so on longer missions so you have somewhere to restart from with this possible corrupted save fix. These workaround solutions have helped me play the game as intended. I sincerely hope they will do the same for you! Try them out and let us know if it worked for you. Fingers crossed! :)
The best Feature of KKND2 is that you can play this game in Split-Screen on the Playstation 1, i have since then never seen another RTS game on a Console with the same Feature.
It was a great option for sure. The PS1 version even had slightly different maps, like the 3-player one with the grassy island in the middle. That was one of the maps where you could feel as if you and your co-player had the same base. Because there was only one land route leading through the map, or something like that, so as long as one player had their starting point in the middle, you sort of had a large joint base area together.
@@SkorvionGames Yeah the Map was really nice, me and my friend would only really play on that one map back then. ahh good memories of easier times. It still amazes me how they pulled that of on the Ps1 with the limited Hardware, i remember that C&C would stutter after a while, but KKND 2 didn't while also running in Split-Screen.
@@MetallGecko1 Yeah same here, that map was a favorite for coop. It was a time of innovation so we got some cool stuf like split-screen integrated into somewhat unlikely places I guess. :P
@@SkorvionGames Perhaps. Developers Experimentet a lot with different Genres and features in the 90s and early 2000s, some are obscure others have revolutionised the Gaming Industry. KKND2 was more of a side produkt of the RTS Hype back then, but it had enough Charackter to justify its existence.

I like how they even managed to make the series 9 seem like having some moral superiority with the whole vengence idea and portraying them as victims. usually the ai factions are just evil and have to be destroyed without much thought behind it
Given how much their wires got crossed, enough to make them get rid of the other Series' as well (as far as I remember), it's a very interesting play on robotic threat portrayal.
The music in this game is great but I've heard a lot of it is stolen. My favourite track, survivor's track 2, was original from a band called refo:mation. I dunno if they were credited.
I recall reading something about that a long time ago, random comments here and there, but I don't think that I ever looked into it enough to verify anything. I remember playing this game for a few days back in the day, but after coming from Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert, I found it was pretty bad. Had not much fun at all with it unfortunately.
That's quite alright. You don't have to like something if you've already gone past it to other things that better suit your personal preferences. People enjoy different things for different reasons after all.
@@HaraldPabisch The AI can be brutal in KKND 2, so I understand that completely. Additionally, the game is a bit rough in certain respects compared to C&C and D2k for example. It has its pros and cons like anything else, but it's a very much loved RTS classic in its own right. :)
I prioritize covering games and media that I really enjoy, have a strong personal connection to, or otherwise value. KKND2 is one of my favorite games from that era, and while I appreciate what the original brought us as well, the way the sequel feels and plays has had a bigger emotional impact on me personally over the years. Plus I thought it could really use some time in the spotlight, for which I felt confident that I could do the game a decent amount of justice with this type of video, as I want to honor such experiences in gratitude for what they have inspired within me (as well as others).
This video isn't actually a review. You didn't critique the game at all. You didn't say anything about whether any given aspect is good or bad. You just described what the game is, which is... cool I guess? It's just not a review. Like a joke where the punchline never comes.
I labeled this type of video as an "inspirational" review, as I wanted to help inspire the feelings and drive I have for playing the game in others, all while covering it in a way that shows what the game is generally about, as well as to give the game in question an optimistic tribute. Looking back, I do think I should have devoted more time into highlighting some other aspects of the game that would balance things out a bit more in line with your feedback. Perhaps then it would have held up better as a review. I'll keep that in mind for the future, if and when applicable. Thank you for your honest thoughts and input!
I hate that campy Australian robot voiceover. What is it with Australian voiceovers for robot being campy whiney voices? It has been a trope in Australian film and television over the past 30 years. UGH.
Heh. Well, I guess voice acting and multimedia can pick up some habits too. There are always ups and downs depending on how things are seen through both creators and viewers alike.
you forgot some important parts why this game is still trash. 1) It doesn't matter which fraction all units are the same. Its more like they have different models but not real diversity like in c&c Tiberium Sun. 2) The hitbox othe units is so huge that they would stuck everywhere. You just have to wait enough that the enemy produce so much big units that they stuck somewhere and you actually don't need to buld defence. But if they able to free them self, than everything comes at once.
I never claim any game is perfect, as yes, your points are valid in some cases, but calling it trash is a disservice to all of the people who put effort into making it a reality. Perhaps they tried their best to make it as balanced and diverse as they could? We don't know, or at least I personally don't. But having game dev experience myself and often seeing how difficult such a project can be to properly develop, especially back then with limited tech and resources, I choose to be grateful for what the game is, and appreciate my time with it, flaws and all. With my limited understanding of the game's dev background. Perhaps modders have found ways to mitigate the issues you mention in the meantime. Tiberian Sun has its fair share of issues as well, but I love it just as much.
@@something451 Understandable that you might feel that way based on your own experience, although I'd argue that there is still much to enjoy about the game if you look at the whole beyond just gameplay mechanics.

Thanks for bringing this point up, as the world of KKND is richer than some players might think!
thank you for bringing us back to the past
You're very welcome. I hope this small tribute to KKND has made your day a tiny bit better in some cool way! :)
This game is awesome and heavily underrated IMO. I used to love the co-op mode on the PlayStation! Great video, BTW!
Glad you liked the video! The old PlayStation co-op mode was magical for me as well, with many cool split-screen moments.
i'm one of the very few who spent time on this back in the old days, while everyone was walking it out with command&conquer and warcraft2. i play those too, but my heart was set on krossfire. love to get me up on that high ground and catch the enemies walking below. they won't know what hit them, until they start sending in those flying things. i love the custom parts on the machines at the machine shops, the tech bunkers, and the tacky briefings at the beginning. good fun game and awesome review!
Thanks! KKND 2 certainly had a special charm which made it stand out to those looking for something a little different. C&C might have greatly overtaken it in terms of quantity and popularity, but that doesn't make KKND 2 any less valuable of an experience with its own cool strenghts.
i still listen to the soundtrack to this day :D
i love how the three factions have their own musical flavour,
the humans have their industrial and metal themes, the robots have their dance/EDM vibes, and the mutants have 'freaky jazz' XD
That's a big part of why the factions are still so memorable - their attached audio flavor. Each inspiring in its own thematic way!
Played this game when I was 6.
Have so many good memories with my brother, we played this on PS1.
Happy to hear you've had a lot of good experiences with the game growing up! Playing 2-player split-screen on the PS1 was so much fun back then!
Not usually a game i would play but you did a really well put together review and i would understand why people would enjoy it :D
Your input is much appreciated of course. :)
Great review man! I love this game, bizarrely the first time I played it was with a friend on the PS1
I recall some limitations like that too. It's interesting how it was set up.
I loved this game back in the days...
If you ever feel like revisiting it, just check the link in the video description and enjoy. It's updated and playable even today. :)
@@michaelm.4618 The soundtrack consists of 3 tracks per faction, so 9 in total. The jazzy one should be Survivor track 3. Here's a playlist someone compiled on UA-cam for easy reference if that helps a little bit: ua-cam.com/play/PLC10A4EDC7F7311F2.html

@@SkorvionGamesIs it more forgiving than the 1st KKND game? 🤔
Haha, I couldn't stop laughing at that what the hell at the end there
:D
The cauterizer is and always will be the coolest unit in any RTS ive ever played. In fact the series 9 is just a cool concept in of itself, because old angry farming robots with old repurposed technology is cool.
Such a sense of lighter dark humor is what gives the game its lasting charm. And I agree that the Series 9's Cauterizer is a very cool unit to move around and zap things with.
Heyyy! Great video man!
It was very entertaining to script and produce - had a lot of creative fun!
My fav RTS game back at 90's.
Somehow, the Evolved cinematics always remindeed me the Fallout 1 and 2.
The early Fallout talking animations do look similar to how briefings are handled in KKND2. Plus, the games share some apocalypse themed flavor.
@@SkorvionGames Hope it had remastered or remake to see how Homing Bazookoid and Mekanik looks like.

Glad to hear you had so much fun with the game! I originally discovered and played it on the PS1 as well, and had similarly exciting splitscreen experiences. :P
Can someone please tell me where can i find this game to download for Windows 10 ? The gog version has problems.
How I usually manage to fix them on the GOG version is as follows:
1st - the random UNABLE TO BUILD UNIT bug.
Love this game! Great video!
Thanks! Nice to hear that you love the game as well!
some crazy units in this game
Oh definitely!
Reasonable. Its atmosphere and spirit is why players love it even to this day. So they did that right, definitely.

Makes sense visually, sure. It's also the early RTS era look and feel.
@@SkorvionGames yea its very nostalgic 😃
