I hate servers that force you to introduce yourself, like there are actually smaller ones that force you to introduce yourself before you get any roles and it has to be accepted by the owners.
My server is like that but we have a reason, my server is for people from my country only and we have a reason for this, so we get so many attacks from people from another country that have problems with us so we have to do the verification step And i think its cool to have verification, when you well be on a server like this you well be sure thats its more safer from a public one
My server does that for a reason. We include a code word that they must include in their introduction to show that they have definitely read the rules. If they don't have that word, then it shows that they haven't read the rules, and will potentially cause trouble.
This is a great video! One thing I would've liked to have seen covered is using onboarding as an anti-bot measure by having a "Selecting this role will permanently ban you!" selection.
@@copycatyt4840 Then you'll get banned lol. If it says in big obvious text "You will be banned if you select this role", and you select the role, that's your problem.

Yeah, so many servers im in get like 5 messages a day, but have like 80 channels. If its like less than 100 members you only really need a dozen or so channels
@desboot9128 having too many channels is bad for small servers because discussions are spread between them very widely so no actual conversation happens

Legitimately: if a server requires me to make a public message before I can see channels, I'm leaving immediately. I don't want to draw attention to myself before I know that I'm going to stick around, and I can't even start to figure that out without seeing what people are talking about.
It doesn't require you to make a message to see channels, it just kinda nags you above the text-bar and top of channel list with a thing telling u to say smth. which is still annoying, but not as bad.
@@amberwingthefairycat I'm not referring specifically to the discord feature in the video. People have been using role bots to do what I described. If the first party onboarding is only a suggestion, and the bad setup still needs role bots, then that makes my comment a little off topic, but one way or another, there are servers like I described, and I hate them.
The worst part of onboarding is definitely the requirement for 5 channels to have both the read and send messages enabled for @everyone, this limits moderation tools like mute roles. It's a cool feature but its held back by these arbitrary limitations.
You forgot about the important question that gives you back all the default channels because there's a bug where if existing members answers at least a single question Discord will turn off all of the channels for them, even those marked as default.
Yeah 3 months after your comment and this is STILL a bug. You also can't add new channels, because they wont show for anyone. Like hwo on earth did this get overlooked an dhow is it still a problem ?!
Was looking to make my server a community server. God am I happy that I came across this. After I figure this out, I cant wait to dive into your other videos.
I've seen this on a few servers, but never really looked into it myself. Though quite a few servers have gotten overboard with the questions where I'd rather just click reactions on a bot than fill a surprise application.
I hate the fact that you need 5 channels where @everyone can type in just to enable onboarding. I have a verification system and I literally can't have 5 channels for everyone just like that. I hope discord looks into this and lowers the requirement to just 1 channel, which is the one people will use to verify.
The thing I don't like about onboarding is that it requires @.everyone to see X amount of channels. The way I have my server setup is @.everyone are unable to see any channels other than announcements, welcome and goodbye & rules unless they accept the rules which then gives them the role to access the server.
Under Safety Setup -> DM and Spam Protection, you can enable rule screening. They rolled this out before onboarding as a replacement for "bot-gating" or whatever you want to call it. It's much more streamlined as it has a dedicated interface where the user has to agree to the rules.
@@nanorex_designs That feature is kinda useless, because any user who has seen this dialog a few times, they just scroll to the bottom and click accept. If you really want them to read the rules a bit, put a secret validation code or whatever within the rules text. But yeah, it depends on what your server tries to be
@@Rocky712_ It's not to get people to read the rules, its a gate for most "bot" accounts. 1/30 people read rules, all servers have pretty much the same rules anyway...
Same. I was trying to set up a server where you only get access to the server once an admin gives you a role, but I couldn't because of that stupid rule
I personally hate onboarding because when I join a server I want to immediatly talk in it. Its personally so annoying to get the pop up EVERY SINGLE TIME about "hey do u want the chungus role or the among us role and hey do you want funny memez 69 channel or general chat"
Onboarding isnt that bad at all, im an admin in my friends small discord server, i added the onobarding feature and all the questions that we ask are: why do you wanna be in this community, what region are you in, and what role color do you want, after that and you can chat freely, it takes barely less than 2 minutes for the onboarding feature :)
Hey, make a video finding out what caused Discord's search to dive in quality like a year back. Suddenly you couldn't search for IDs and get every result, making results unreliable, affecting people's ability to moderate.
I watched this video wanting to add reaction roles realizing it was just a tutorial for onboarding which I have already done. I watched it anyways because he was funny😭
Wondering if whenever the situation blows over/there's more info about it, if you could make a video about the new fast-spreading malware that was uploaded onto Curseforge for minecraft mods! The owner of LunaPixel, the modding studio who made BetterMC, got severely hacked and compromised because the malware spread into their computer after updating a mod. It turns out that the earliest potential malware upload on Curseforge stems back to April 13th! This hack is insanely severe, employees of Mojang were even contacted to see if they had been affected. Apparently it's so bad that they recommend not even touching minecraft on your computer until it blows over, even if you don't have mods. I think it'd make a super interesting video!

Great info! very helpful. I'm setting up a members-only server for the customers of my online business, and I'd like them to provide their Order # before being approved manually by my team and allowed into the channel, can this onboarding achieve that or do I still need a utility bot for it? If so, which utility bot would you recommend? Thank you!

one quick question, does this conflict with the wick bot? the verification part? since here you will be automatically assigned into different roles, however the wick thing will put you in everyone group if you are not verified.
Ohh so that's what the new server role systems were from. I always thought it was some feature a server gets only if it's added to Discord's partner servers.
This onboarding broke my server. It doesn't update Roles if you add new viable channels to those roles AFTER someone has selected their choices. They have to reselect their answers to see the channels. Now I have channels I set to default and need everyone to see that literally no one can see.
Onboarding is completely incompatible with how I want to run my server and will break basically every permission I have set up if I want to accommodate it, it's pretty ridiculous that they don't let you break their rigid rules on how it must be used like your example with the resource channel (and there's also the bit with the animation and such which I find ridiculously obnoxious when joining servers)
I'm late to this video, but I'd recommend leaving all channels except staff channels visible. People, for whatever reason, join a server and won't wait for permission to fully view it. They'll assume it's empty, and leave. Just make it so they can't speak until verified.
