  • Today's News is tomorrow's history and the television newsrooms are prolific documenters of what takes place each day, recording events and conveying them to the public.
The news camera folk are capturing not only events of the period, but also creating time-capsule elements with each story reported. That's if their record is kept by News Departments who value the historic significance of their material.
This video is a compilation of news bulletin video taken in the early 1970's by cameramen at TVW Channel Seven in Perth.
The News Editor at the time was the legendary Darcy Farrell, who set up the first television newsroom in Western Australia.
TVW News cameramen during this era included Peter Goodall, Michael Goodall, Lu Belci, Bryan Dunne, Tom Hall, Don Hanran-Smith, Gordon McColl, Alex McPhee, Bill Meacham, Brad Pearce, Steve Thompson, Stan Jeffery and Matt Williams.
All footage shown here was shot on 16mm black and white film, as it was the age before electronic news gathering (ENG).
This video contains vision of happenings occurring in Perth during the early 1970's.

1971 Boan's Christmas Parade. I'm driving the Channel 7 vintage car for Sandy & Percy Penguin. Never imagined I'd ever see that footage, what a hoot. Great times.

Saw a HQ Holden. So this would be 1971. No HQ's in 1970!

Thank you for posting this. Takes me back to my childhood. I had forgotten what my city looked like then.

Great footage of my home city, thanks for uploading. Interesting to see the Concert Hall under construction. Perth was really booming then, as the growing skyline shows.

The concert hall was opened in January 1973 so based on the stage of construction there I’m guessing this is actually a 1972 video

Fantastic footage, the only question I have is, why is there no footage of the Apollo 11 Astronauts visit to Perth? They arrived in Perth on the 31st of October 1969 - Try finding footage of that event, its almost impossible!!!

At 0.48 there is footage of the rear of a Holden Premier, the first model with the new sloped rear side panels. I remember as a young boy my father proudly announcing he was the first bloke in Perth to take delivery of the new model, and I am fairly sure that car in the image is his. About spring 1971 I think?

Jonathan Mathys would have been hundreds and hundreds of HQ's around then

Perth public servants got advance distribution of Holdens back then. My dad was the head of public health and we always had top-of-the-line Holdens (Caprice or Statesman, maybe) months before anyone else.

Some of the traffic scenes are 1973. The newest cars I see are a VJ Valiant Charger and an amber blinker update HQ Holden

We have home movies of us as little girls all dressed up in pretty dresses going on the train at the zoo. My Mother and Grandmother would be beautifully dressed with hats and heels, and now I live in shorts and thongs. Go figure 😁
