  • In 1987, the German Ministry of Defense initiated the development program for a self-propelled howitzer known as the PzH 2000, short for "Panzerhaubitze 2000". This endeavor traced its origins back to the SP70 international howitzer project, which was jointly sponsored by West Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy in the late 1960s. These nations collectively recognized the need for enhancements in the indirect fire control system. Although five prototypes were eventually constructed, the project was put on hold during the 1980s due to financial constraints, technical challenges, and a growing interest in the American M109 155-mm self-propelled howitzer.
