This song and always made me cry even when first aired back then. It’s hard being a single parent raising a child. I get he didn’t mean to be so angry. But I’m sure Madonna as a young girl reminded him constantly of her mother. And that cuts deep so much. She was angry her mother was taken from her.

She was dressing up as her mom (who passed away in this story) and it triggered her dad. That is why he shook her. He suffers emotional damage and many times those kinds of people pass it on to their kids, sadly.

In Australia, this was Madonna's first single to fail to chart in the Top 40 since she first began having hits here. In fact, Madonna's first ever Top 49 chart appearance was on the Australian charts.

I can't believe I've been watching all of your Madonna Mondays and I missed somehow my favorite Madonna video of all time! Ever since I first heard the song, it resonated with me and my own childhood. But the video is on another level, inspired by citizen Kane and also autobiographical in Madonna's own childhood, the symbolism and the way shadows and light play a role in the trauma of child abuse is so powerful here. Madonna left no detail forgotten and it is so powerful and that symbolism and how it actually can feel going through something like that. In the end, she is dancing on her mother's grave as the video fades out, and I just absolutely love this masterpiece. To me one of the greatest videos ever made!

I love this song! Always gets me in the feels 🥲As was already stated, this is Madonna's life, the death of her mother (Madonna was 5 at the time), the fallout she had with her father (didn't help he married their housekeep of all people, 2 years later) that took decades to 'repair', and the abusive relationship with her ex-husband Sean Penn. There are numerous songs where Madonna references her mother, either in lyrics or in the video. The fact she saw her mother with the stiches on her lips left an impact on her, she would later reference these stiches on the cover of Madam X. The ending is Madonna as a little girl, dancing on her mothers grave, it symbolises her embracing and accepting her mothers death. As always though Madam, great reaction! I look forward to next weeks reaction, which I believe is Vogue. 😘

In Oh Father - It was obviously about her relationship with her dad and the disconnect between the two after her mother tragically died of breast cancer December of 1963 when Madonna was 5yo girl and how her father resented Madonna because she resemble her mother (they look very much alike) - so every time her father would look at Madonna he remembers his loss, his true love and wife at such a young age (Madonna's mother was only a young woman when she died at age 30). The other reason he resented Madonna was because her mother and his wife was also named Madonna - mother and daughter named Madonna - Her dad basically couldn't handle looking at her so he split all the kids up and sent them to relatives until he found a house keeper to look after the kids and house while he worked for General Motors in Michigan. What made it worse for Madonna? - Silvio "Tony" Ciccone, Madonna’s father, remarried their maid, Joan Gustafson, in 1966, only three years after Madonna's mother's death. I watched an interview and also read the biography of her brother Christopher Ciccone (he is gay) called "My Sister Madonna" - it went like this - Her stepmother was a very strict and had stern rules and regulations that Madonna resented and that started the fire of her rebellions' toward authority and the Catholic Church - Her stepmother, however, responded to Madonna's insolence by physically abusing her and slapping her on a regular basis. Madonna recalled in an interview with Rolling Stone an incident when she was around 12 years old, and her stepmother hit her so hard that her nose bled. Ironically, Madonna was happy about the whole thing because it meant she could change out of the ugly dress she was wearing.
When Madonna was 18 and able to fight back she did something that made her stepmother stop laying a finger on her - She was out with friends and late home past her stepmother curfew - as she put the keys into the front door lock her stepmother opened the door and slapped Madonna across her face so without skipping a heart beat Madonna slapped her stepmother back even harder and told her not to ever touch her again - Stepmother never did and Madonna left for NYC soon after
assault. Madonna's ex husband Sean Penn was an alcoholic that was physically and mentally abusive towards her as reflected in the video when he slapped her and she had a bruised face. When in fact he punched her unconscious and when she came round she found herself tied up onto a chair - Sean was Jailed but Madonna still loved him and withdrew the charges - Madonna denies he was physically abusive but that's only because she prefers to remain private and her outlet is her art - her lyrics - her videos all tell a different story and that's the truth as it's cathartic for her - I am looking forward to her biopic that she has written and is directing (mind you I know Madonna is a prolific diary writer and every day she she pens her life since a teenager)

this video is loosely based on Madonna's childhood. Madonna's mother died when she was 5, leaving her father alone with 6 kids under the age of 7, her two older brothers, a younger brother and two younger sisters. she says the only memories of her mother that she was her dying, the scenes of corpse with the lips sown up she says are her first and last memory of her mother. her father was greiving and sometimes took out his hurt, sadness and grief on his kids. and then it the parts that set in the modern day it shows the cycle of abuse because the character ends up in an abusive relationship. which may or may not have been Sean Penn. but Madonna and her father are very close

Hey gurl! I have been waiting for you to get to this visual masterpiece. Directed by the great David Fincher, this is such a striking and powerful video. As a filmmaker myself, I have always appreciated this video for it's great use of imagery to tell the story of the abuse the little girl went through with her dad, then what she goes through with the boyfriend who is abusive too. The song is not so much about her dad specifically, but she can really pull at the heart strings. Make sure to react to Promise To Try. There is a fan made video to the song, it's from the Like A Prayer album and the song is a hearfelt gem about her mother! This is easily still in my top 5 Madonna videos of all time. Love the song soo much, the video is a stunner, Madonna is beyond iconic, and Madam you are so great! Keep it up! Sorry it's been rough on you lately!

This is my second favorite album from Madonna. The True Blue Album and the song Open Your Heart are my faves. Oh Father simulates my relationship with my father. Physical and psychologically abusive. 1989 was also one of the best years of my life. The Like A Prayer album liberated me from my father. It was also my sweet 16. Discovered gay bars and enjoying men. I was 6’3” and now taller and stronger than my father. He still yelled at me but I no longer cared. I was so happy and proud to be me, and my father could do nothing about it. This is a sad song and video, but I am sure so important to all those who had abusive fathers. I am lucky to have had Queen Madonna through out my childhood and teenage years. I was 10 and a half years old when she released her debut album in July of 1983.

Madonna 's mother died when she was 5 years old. Her mane was also Madonna, died of cancer 😭
It was a big issue to Madonna deal with this loss + accepting to live with a stepmother and also grow up among men (her brothers)

Madonna herself tells the story of her childhood just like the story of the clip. Her mother died of an illness when she was 5 years old, her father married her tough nanny that kept raising Madonna and her five siblings and the father himself is described by her as a religious Catholic man, who educated his children very rigidly. Probably even violent from time to time, even though it was never said openly. Finally, her older brother Anthony is addicted to alcohol and is now a well-known homeless man who lives under a bridge in Michigan and is interviewed by the press, tells some dirty lies about his sister, for a few cents and thus gets himself a few more drops of alcohol. I guess the images related to alcohol addiction are related to her brother's addiction, which must have caused difficult situations in her family while she was a child until the age of 19 y.o. while she left her father’s house.
I think this song is aimed at all the people who hurt her. In my opinion after her mother's death, and until she achieved her current status, she was constantly harmed by people. Some of it is known and some less so. She herself told of a violent rape she went through as a young women around the age of 20 and etc.
Keep up the Amazing things that you are doing about Madonna. I hope she can see you @Madonna ❤️ you're excellent and your generation's encounter with Madonna's more old works is fascinating, instructive and generally amazing 👑 like you are 🏳️‍🌈So colorful and smart 🤩
You DID 👑 figure it out that the content of the clip is a Parallel to Madonna's life as a child 🧿🎶 And deeper than that, you realized that the rigid attitude directed at her in the clip from her father, is the story of her childhood. Genius 😎.💋

This 1989 mv of Oh Father from her 5th studio album Like A Prayer is said to be her attempt to embrace, accept her beloved mom’s premature death at age 30 in 1963 from terminal breast CA when Madonna was age 5, and the torment she went through of unresolved emotional issues of pain and sense of loss, anger that followed that. She revealed this was also her way of portraying and to reconcile with her troubled relationship with male authority figures in her life to that point: God, the Pope/Church, her ex-husband Sean Penn whom she divorced early in 1989, and more specifically with her dad who was a strict disciplinarian during her childhood. This song and video is considered by many as her most emotional and relatable ballad that resonated with many fans who experienced something similar in childhood.
The mv had its world premiere on MTV on November 11, 1989. After criticism from some viewers about the close up shot of the sewn-up lips of Madonna’s mom lying in an open casket during the funeral wake-a childhood image that was seared in Madonna’s memory and has haunted Madonna since-MTV threatened to pull-off broadcasting the mv unless Madonna deletes that scene, but she refused to remove that shot and she told MTV she would rather cancel future deals with them, prompting MTV to back down and continued to air the full video. I appreciate and enjoy your journey into Madonna’s music.

David Fincher ( express yourself, vogue, Bad girl ) directed this beautiful video. As many Madonna's work, it could have, as the song, many meanings. The 'father' could be her dad ( their relation became conflictual after her mother's death ), her ex-husband Sean Penn ( there were rumors of domestic violences) or God. Si intimate and delicate. The strings at the beginning are the final of Dear Jessie ( that song could be seen as un intro to this one ).
