Cameron had the audacity on leaving No 10 to say that he left our defences stronger? how so, no Harriers, no Carriers in service, no ASW fixed wing aircraft, and an Army smaller than 1914. And the Russians treating the North Sea like their pond. But still we send billions abroad, my mum taught me charity begins at home.

I agree with what you say, but it was labour's Des Browne that messed up the carriers by ordering them as they are now. To change to cats would not have been financially viable.

Just cancel foreign aid for a year and you have the money for a catapult system, why have 2 brilliant carriers that can't operate ALL the other NATO carrier aircraft,if these F35's prove unsuitable, we are buggered

this ship isn't being mothballed it's being refurbished. Mothballed is where they would prep a ship for permanent storage. Mostly decommissioned ship.

True mothballed is probably not the right term to use, "Extended Readiness" is the official term, a long term refit and held in reserve.

It's not exactly mothballed, That implies it's an end of life ship, The Albion's getting a refit early in her life to ensure she's as state of the art as she can be, I imagine our Navy planners and ship architects learnt a lot from designing the Elizabeth class carriers and are looking to using a similar modular design on future ships and are adapting as much of that internally as is possible on the fleets younger ships like the Albion.

What can I say, well I removed the bow thruster, engine/HV couplings with the help of a 10 ft scaffold pole. I also removed about 600 boil in the bag rations left behind by the boot necks, didn’t bring lunch in for six months 😂 This must be nearly 10 years ago. Bulwark is in 8 Dock now being refitted to rejoin the fleet! 🇬🇧💪👊👍

Im sick of people dissing the proud Royal Navy! Once the two new QE class aircraft carriers are built and the seven new astute submarines and the bigger 5 new Opvs are complete along with the six new destroyers and the 8 new bigger more capable type 26 are built along with five minimum ( probably more) lighter frigates are built and all the other ships in the fleet, Albion , bulwark, ocean, more than half a million tonnes at the navys disposal!, the Royal Navy will be the most modern navys in the world, granted smaller but allot more capable with all the new tech. Not to mention the four new 35 thousand tonnes Royal fleet auxilary ships almost completed and the four new ballistic submarines getting built, and the Royal Navy has loads of other ships it can deploy and all the other big fleet auxilary ships it has. Stop slamming the navy it's getting better and will still be very capable.oh yeah and all the Royal Marines craft and the nine new British version of the p8 Poseidon aircraft being built!!! And that's just the navy! P8s are RAF but they can hunt and kill submarines and provide survaelance for the navy now the nimrods are gone. Also the navys getting back its fighter jet wings so stop complaining, Britain is still in the top list of millitary capable country's on the globe and all together one of the most modern, we don't need a huge millitary like the past the technology these days means you can do allot more with less! Fact be proud and feel lucky we are a powerful nation, being a global power is great not allot of country's are one.🙂

w canes No neither of the carriers are getting mothballed the only reason one of either Albion and Bulwark gets mothballed is because we don't need both in action at the same time it saves money and we don't really have manpower to crew up Albion, Bulwark, Ocean, QE and Prince of Wales who all each have a crew of around 1000 each when at sea however the carriers have the spotlight and one will always be at sea whilst the other is preparing to go to sea of in refit

It's not being mothballed! It's getting a great refit! And will be on extended readiness! The British military might be a bit smaller but we have uped tha capacity and now we have great equipment and can deploy anywhere anytime anywhere in the world! Most country's can't do this!

It has no Hangars...I served in Bulwark, massive design flaw not having hangars. Ships are slow and lumbering. Full of fat-arse carrier queen types. Kind of pointless now Royal Marines are re-organising to 200 men Commandos and materially not great.

Albion recently featured on the UA-cam channel Sailing with Uma when Dan and Kika were invited onboard for a few days after completing there North Atlantic crossing (The Captain had been following them on their UA-cam channel) in there full-electric sailboat Uma. Uma had been rescued from being scrapped. The Diesel engine was broken. So they replaced it with an electric motor from a forklift truck and some batteries. They continued to update everything as and when they could and have spent the last 5 years in the Caribean before venturing across the Atlantic to the 2019 Southampton boat show. The electric motor has just been updated to allow regenerative battery charging when underway by sail. They are Last time I looked they were making their way through Amsterdam dodging massive ships, bags, fishing boats and surf boarders. It's fun to take a look...

You have a ready made commando carrier add helecopters and landing craft and all the hardware needed for 200 Royal Marines
Few patriot missles and four mini guns and four gpmg machine gun and few drone's.
This would have hospital facilities on board.
Add few torpedo tubes and you have a ready made war ship.

made about the same time as the Freedom, & costing about the same(built w/high wage base), yet 1 is 18 /19K tonnes & the other is 3.5 K tonnes. Which common cents would u say is better, more value for the dollar? Both need major repairs early on so same same. Length & beam to compare r 577' by 95' vs 378' by 57.4'.

Pray both are back in service, fully manned and with full weapons fit. A couple of comments re. below posts. The Royal Navy- proud service that has been literally and figuratively emasculated. Type 45 destroyers- no matter how good they are there are only 6. That is 6 total, some will be in for refit, some on route to station and returning from station. Precious space on fighting ships being wasted to accommodate female personal.

    • @simonhool3073

According to this UA-cam video one is at dock side in "Extended Readiness" and the second at sea, operational in "High sate of Readiness". Other on line information would seem to support this. If not so- great. The RN IMO could use both of this class operational.

I don't know why everybody is going on about how badly Cameron left the Navy and Armed forces in general to be fair to Cameron the Navy has been shrinking since WWII and even slightly before that with the Washington Naval Treaty in the 1920's under Cameron in the 2015 defence review the navy is growing for the first time since WWII I'm not fan of Cameron but he did a good job stabilising this country from a downwards spiral that started in 1918 now it's May's job keep the Armed forces and the U.K. on the up
