'You're eating that's great'
Never, ever say this to someone who has an ED. The best is just to ignore it when they do eat.
Source: me😅
For real
Yeah...also Ana ex bf goes on about eating. Gets worse. Narrowly avoided the hospital. I dumped him. Not a nice man.
Right
exactly my thoughts at that scene
For those wondering on why people are upset with the nurse, the patient was demonstrating clear signs that she intended to kill herself which the nurse (and presumably other staff) ignored. Someone who is on anti-depressants for years doesn't suddenly get better, and someone with anorexia does not start eating because they decided to try to get better. Her accepting the fact that she couldn't exercise for a year without argument was a huge red flag, and the reason she did this is because she didn't intend to survive until next year. If someone who is struggling with mental illness suddenly gets better, call 911. They are intending to hurt themselves. Note that this is not the same thing as recovery, if someone with mental illness recovers that's all well and good, but if they were depressed last night and woke up in good spirits they're in danger.
100% accurate
Oh that makes a lot of sense ... I was a bit confused why he was clearly upset with the nurse, so thank you for the insight!
To be fair,It's hard for people with good mental health to read people who are unwell if they haven't been around people who are not
@newyoutubeaccount2023 ugh. You're either a troll or Canadian.
@newyoutubeaccount2023 Trust me, I wish that were the case. I live just so my family doesnt have to bury me. But it isn't. Just like you'd call 911 if someone was having an emergency with their physical health, you call 911 if someone is having an emergency with their mental health.
I can tell you as someone who has anorexia and an exercise addiction. All of this is portrayed accurately
ok well I will help you, go get a doctors appointment, general health check-up, if he or she says that you need to be (example) 63kg and you are 55kg, then make your goal to get to 63kg and stay that way, don't exercise and eat less to make your body weight unhealthy
Hope your ok 💙

Nice to see that anorexia/eating disorders have moved a bit out of the skeletal white teenager box on TV. I've had eating disorders (restrictive) for 50+ years (started with my mom paying me to lose weight when I was 6-7 and not fat), and while I was a slender, white 17 year old anorexic, I wasn't 'skinny'. I'm still dealing with this after another relapse, but am in therapy with someone who 'gets it' from all angles.
So true
As a fully recovered, former anorexia patient, this hits home. I was in hospital, tube fed, when I ran away with the intention to end my life. They found me in time in the hospitals chapel and convinced me of going back. Hardest thing I probably have ever done.
Im so sorry you had to go through something so rough. I hope you are doing better 💞
@@JulieB____99 you know, these days every time I get a notification for a new comment I expect something exceptionally mean being said to me, like so often, but you truly have made my day with your kind words. Thank you, it makes a difference ❤️🩹

i feel like this depiction of an eating disorder is the only one that has ever made me feel 'heard or valid'. even at my worst, I never considered myself bad enough because the complications I had were not 'life-threatening'. I really resonatewith the depiction that the ASSOCIATED issues are just as bad as the direct issues of the ed (physical)
As a psychologist specializing in eating disorders and working on the front line with parents, there are so many elements of this episode that ring true. The challenges individuals and families face are astounding. Bravo for bringing what is often in the dark out into the light!
People keep commenting on how the Nurse was "SO DENSE" & how she was "SO STUPID", but I think this episode was SO BRILLIANT, because it offers a Wake-Up Call to people who have Friends/Co-Workers/Relatives with Eating Disorders & shows how This DOESN'T Work. A lot of the time, other people will dismiss what the Victim/Patient is going through & think if they "Just Try" or "Work Harder", then they'll "Get Through This". THIS is a Lifetime Mental Health Disorder. Having the Nurse acting this way mirrors what people in the Patient's life go through & gets through to them more readily than if they simply showed what an Anorexic REALLY goes through & needs to "Cope" in their life, because such viewers might dismiss that as not being about "Their" Friend/Co-Worker/Relative. IDK about the rest of the episode, but I thought this was clever on the part of the writers, if that IS what they were going for.
You are 100% right. I use to have an eating disorder I’m okay now thankfully I eat three meals a day but I still do a lot of walking and I have in the back of my mind that if I don’t do 10,000 steps or more I can’t have any dinner. Or if I accidentally eat chocolate (which I did do a couple of days ago I had granola with little pieces of chocolate in) before my cheat day then I will have to wait until the Saturday after to have chocolate again. I also don’t eat much the next day after my cheat day as I eat a slice of chocolate cake and had a glass of wine the day before. But I am a lot healthier now I am back to 9 and a half/ 10 stone which is my healthy weight but it is and will always be in the back of my mind.

I don’t understand why the doctor was so annoyed at the nurse? Neither of them deemed her to to be on a psych hold or monitored. And who knows she might have tried to recover, but then a surgeon stormed in and told an anorexic patient she couldn’t exercise for a year? A psychiatrist should have broken that news to her.

And this is why nobody with eating disorders or other mental health issues wants to be treated by the medical establishment (I say as a recovered anorexic/bulimic who is now an RN). The complete apathy and the shoulder shrugging and eye rolls and not taking the patient seriously is a systemic risk to patient safety 🤦♀️
I don’t think it’s fair to imply that the nurse was apathetic and not taking April seriously. I think she was and her compassion and concern was felt even through the screen. However the nurse was merely naive and inexperienced to believe that she was okay and getting better just cause she said she was. I think she just needs some more training.
So true.
This really hits hard as someone who struggled and still struggles with atypical anorexia. I had tachycardia, electrolyte imbalances, and low BP too. I wasn't as exercise-obsessed as her but I still overexercised and didn't eat and occasionally purged. The worst part of it is that I wasn't emaciated or otherwise in the demographic you would associate with anorexia. So I didn't feel "valid".
I do like how they portrayed the anorexic woman as not being in the demographic for anorexics either. So many people think it's emaciated, white, teenage girls, when in fact every race, both males and females, and any weight (well except if you're Tess Holiday, because she loves being fat) can get anorexia.
I’m dead like why she watch her fall down the stairs like that
She couldn't do anything 😂
@daraley1098 Sure, but the calm (non)reaction to the fall was.....
...unusual
Was she meant to get involved midfall and risk hurting herself too? Asking as an RN myself 🤔
ikr💀
@@leahmcdermott4189 No they mean they way she didn't even act surprised or like run to help her when she landed. She just stood there and said go get help in the deadest voice.
Absolutely phenomenal video and acting and everything. I don’t say this very often but, I think warnings of a suicide attempt and anorexia should have been mentioned before the video or in the description. I am chronic and live in hospitals. I can’t tell the amount of times I’ve just…wanted all the noise to just, go away. Doctors, meds, Iv beeps, heart monitor, everyone’s pity and concern, my own toxic horrific self deprecating thoughts…this…this was way too real. From the barricaded door to her boyfriend breaking up with her due to her medical and mental issues and not being able to see anything getting any better. Not wanting to be, herself, in her body, to feel okay again…please please, if there could be a warning next time it’d be GREATLY appreciated
Hey as someone who also relates to this episode and has been recovered for 5 years now, I want you to know it can get better. I relapsed so many times I thought I was going to be stuck in the loop forever. You can do it. I’m not going to say it’s all in the willpower because it took me a lot of outside help to get better, but I believe in you. Keep fighting, you’ve got this 💖
This is a horrible horrible disease. Anorexic with exercise addiction for 35 years. When I tried to get better my body just couldn’t stop eating. Now I’m depressed haven’t gone outside in 2years and have other health problems. I wish I could go back as I know that’s wrong to say at least I was happy. There is no way out of this disease
yes there is a way out. lots of people recover from it. one of my best friends did. and lots of people in these comments have or are on their way there. There is hope. Please keep fighting. You're beautiful and stronger than you think. Sending love and hugs to you.
The way they just watched her fall allll the way down the stairs… what?! 😂
I spent half this clip wondering how she’s not a patient at her own hospital 😂also why’d they just watch her fall!? Like please don’t all help all at once
The nurse is like 'well I told you and you ain't wanna listen'😒

This show was before Yaya DaCosta/ April Sexton was a nurse on Chicago Med
I love working out every day, and can't go without it. I also understand the importance of eating/drinking enough to sustain it and provide my body with the nutrients it needs.
Anorexia actually is a very serious illness, sometimes caused by fat-shaming.
i thought she looked like the nurse on chicago med
thank you for putting it in the description
I understand the boyfriend leaving her due to her poor mental health, but it is not the time to leave her when she’s being hospitalized. That’s low.
Feels like he broke up with her for being in the hospital, not her anorexia. Maybe he was worried about her gaining weight?
this is golden
I have an ED and I was betrayed by someone I thought cared about me. It was traumatic and it only made things worse.
I love the way she just stands there and watches her patient fall down the stairs instead of running up to her,and rendering any type of assistance;🤦🏼♂️unbelievable. And the dr. is a jerk. Does anyone have the full episode they can load onto YT?
I don’t think that doctor had any empathy 😮I mean you shouldn’t let your emotions get the best of you when working in healthcare, still is find it hard to be as checked out as he is
Why is everyone commenting about the nurse watching her fall down the stairs. It's not like you can stop a fully grown adult mid-fall from tumbling plus it took place in about 3 seconds
It's not that she didn't stop her from falling. It's that she barely even reacted even after she landed. All she did was say go get help in the deadest voice.
Didn't expect to see Nurse April Sexton off Chicago Med being a anorexic patient and treated by Piper Chapman as a Nurse
April what are you doing here lol
People often seem most positive and optimistic before an attempt. I’ve seen it personally and my person lost their struggle.
The girl with a shatter pelvis managed to get something to hang herself up that high? Not buying it.
she broke her knee not her pelvis. And she could have hopped around or limped.
The way they stood there after she litterly fell all the way down those stairs ...
Omgawd😅...
Like they litterly sprang into no kinda action...
That part was a bit funny too me cause i thought maybe after seeing her falling they would have ran up to help her from falling down many others..
The way she calmly said “go get some help”
Anorexia can make a person prone to injuries, illnesses, and suicide attempts.

Love Yaya Dacosta❤
So what happened to her after this...? Does she wake up....have the surgery....?
Former anorexic here. I’m half black and hated being curvy when I was a teen because men will always sexualise me. So I started working out and dieting and I lost weight started looking like a model and people would say you should model. But I also developed perfectionism and tried to transform my body to impossible standrards what was once dedication became obsession. I’d wake up at 3am to run. I ran 2x a day, ate an apple and 12 almonds a day and drank 5litres of water to keep full. I became 48kilos lost my period and my liver was failing they told me to start eating it was so so hard and I’ll have crazy workout attacks in the middle of the night. I tried killing my self because the scale didn’t go down but couldn’t complete the attempt. For people with anorexia being fat is the worst fate ever! They will rather die than get fat.
I think it has to do with control. If that’s the only aspect of your life you can control and succeed in you become addicted to being in control and succeeding by your own efforts.
How did she push move all the furniture against the door and get herself up there with a broken leg?

Can we talk about the title of this video and how there was no warnings. If there is images of a suicide attempt it should be stated so people can choose weather or not they are in the mind space to view the content.
I mean.. it was a video about a girl struggling w/ her mental health to begin with, and although that scene admittedly threw me off guard, I’m not going to be offended by it because I knew the context of the video had to do with mental health. Maybe try a more suitable TV show that isn’t in the medical field, as wild things happen there and just like this little clip was- is unpredictable.
Maybe you should toughen up a bit. Life doesn't come with instructions or trigger warnings.

Is there a way to report this so that it doesn’t get taken down but puts the warning when you click on the video that it contains themes of suicide?
I am in a place in my life where I can handle seeing it, knowing it is not real, but it could be very triggering for someone who is thinking about or has previously tried to end their life.
- A mental illness survivor and social work student
Fellow mental illness survivor AND social worker here. I'm not too sure, but I will try.
I am not trying to be mean but can you explain how this is triggering or anything really is? I honestly don't understand the concept of being triggered. Isn't it easier for you to find a way to cope with life's difficulties or get therapy instead?
@@9395gb Seeing someone's body hanging from the ceiling can be quite traumatic especially for individuals with a history of mental illness and suicide and can trigger thoughts about suicide that may linger for individuals who are currently depressed and/or thinking about ending their life.
The National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention recommends that news and entertainment producers/writers "Avoid showing or describing the details about suicide methods."
This episode shows the character attempting to end her life by hanging. This does not follow professional guidelines on covering sensitive topics.
You, as an adult, may not have trouble seeing a video of someone attempting to ending their life (especially since you know it is not real), but a young person and/or survivor may have a very difficult time seeing this.
Also, I do see a psychologist for counseling, which is part of the reason that seeing the video does not cause my mind to repeatedly think about suicide after viewing the video. In the past, the picture would have played in my mind on repeat and put me at an increased risk on the day (and perhaps week) that I watched the video.
That is why I would like a content warning on the video. So that individuals can choose to not watch the video if it may put them at an increased risk, may be developmentally inappropriate, or they simply do not want to see a video that graphically portrays suicide.
Honestly
Really? Then maybe YOU shouldn’t watch the show if it triggers you. But don’t ruin it for anyone else
