One of the ways I feel best about spending my money is paying people for a job they are good at and enjoy doing but that you’re not good at or hate. I have a cleaning lady who has come every second week to my house for the past 12 years. I am so grateful for the excellent job she is doing and I trust her blindly with my home. I have occasionally helped her son out with his German lessons (I am a language teacher). Spending money on services and being able to contribute to building a community where people help each other out is for me one of the most rewarding experiences. Same goes with buying your groceries at the local farmers instead of an international supermarket chain with questionable practices, if you see what I mean.
Anyone else fall in love more and more with the Minimalist ways ? These living room videos are soo easy to process. Please always check your charities !!! I am on a board of one and you would be surprised how much actually goes towards the cause . A huge chunk goes to admin .

I hate having to buy stuff, but when I do its normally really practical like a headlamp or running shoes. I wasn't always this way though, it's a shame looking around your room (before going minimalist) and seeing all the junk, the wasted money, the wasted potential, the wasted hours of your life.
Thank you so much for your inspirational content this month and your warm hearts! I have minimized quite a lot and my room now feels more like me. Much love from Germany.
You guys are amazing people, send so much good energy and help out so many people. I’m glad your able to spread your message so effectively; the world needs more people like you!
This series of Livingroom Conversations has been my favorite of all the things you've done thus far. They are short, fun to listen and watch, and add purpose. I was called a minimalist about 14 years ago by a mother of one of my daughter's friends when my daughter was in the third grade. I had never heard the term. I guess I've always been that way. And now it's a big movement. Who knew? 😊
I really enjoyed these short living room conversations, thank you for taking the time to share with us. I kept looking at that adorable plush dog in the chair behind you :) My question would be, how do The Minimalists tackle every day mailbox clutter? (like bills and other random junk that comes in the mail)
Wow! Just wow! Finished another one! I listen to your videos before i go to sleep and as i wake up. Every video is very informative. No excess stuff added. Plain simple. Direct interaction. Love it!
Totally agree. You really can't take things with you. I suddenly realized this when I lost my last parent and on her deathbed, she talked about what she had done. Those memories are the only things that matter at the end IMHO.
So agree with the idea that time is not replaceable... so I am trying to spend my time in more meaningful ways. Finding videos like these most helpful!
I appreciate these videos so much, currently reading "Everything That Remains" and listen to the podcast at work weekly. Y'all have changed my life for the better both mentally and physically...Bag Lady by Erykah Badu is a fitting song to minimalism.
My gym membership adds so much value to my life. It’s $150/month, which many would say is insane, but the joy and value I get out of it is immeasurable compared to other gyms I’ve tried. My gym is a group of my friends and supporters, it helps me set and strive to achieve personal goals, it pushes me mentally, helps me practice focus and perseverance, it is a great pastime and provides awesome social interaction with like minded people. It provides opportunities for philanthropic donations of time and money through their events as well. I get so much more out of it than just a monotonous exercise that I have to force myself to go do.
Hey Josh, i really enjoyed the series and get a LOT of value from it. Thank you so much! I spent most of my money for travelling or experiences with my friends. Looking forward to your next videos :) Greetings from Germany
First, Happy Belated Birthday, Joshua! Next, I've been practicing minimalism for several years now and really hope to get to a point where I can financially afford to make a real impact on education in underdeveloped countries. Kudos for the work that The Minimalist do in these other places. #educatorforlife #burdenwithstudentloans
They buy Eames chairs :p. Not judging. I think its nice to invest in furniture if its truly what you want and know that you'll enjoy it for a while and take care of it.
I live by the saying "the poor can't afford to be cheap". I am still in debt, and barely getting by paycheck by paycheck, but all things I own are high quality. Higher quality lasts a longer time, and ends up making life easier, and maybe even cheaper. My winter jacket is 400e cashmir wool coat. Its super high quality, stays dry in the rain, keeps warm at -30c, looks good enough for formal events, with a suit, but casual enough for every day life. It's the only coat I own, and I think it will last at least 10 years more, maybe 15. Same with my winter boots, 300e, Gore tex, warm, steel toe, flexible, real leather, matches the jacket, comfortable to walk, ergonomic, very tough materials, can be used for long distance hiking in the forest at winter, but still looks good enough to wear even at formal events. I doubt they will break any time soon. I try to use the same logic with everything I own. The hardest are the electronics, because the quality is not common or easy to find, also it becomes outdated pretty quickly. But the phone I got now seems pretty good. 300e, waterproof, protective case, small, fast enough for common apps. If I don't fuck up royally, it could also last a decade easy. I am also always asking myself, what do I actually need.
I'm sad that we won't be seeing Living Room Conversations daily anymore! What a great series. Question for you, if you see it: What is your take on things like store points cards, coupons, rebate codes, store "super cash," and things like that? Do you collect store points anywhere? I go back and forth on this. Sometimes I feel like I'm missing out on saving money if I don't collect points--other times I'm pretty sure it's just incentive to buy more crap. Would love to hear your thoughts!
Hi, I'm Dewi and I'm from Indonesia. I've been following your posts in UA-cam and podcasts in Spotify (I quit my social media so I can't follow you on FB or IG) and I'm trying to be a minimalist since then. I was overwhelmed and I guessed I had anxiety too, so I need to simplify my life and minimalism is one of the ways. By focusing on what really matters, I'm being close to God and it gives me some kind of peacefulness. My question is, do you think that being a minimalist makes us more religious? Or by being religious it makes you to be a minimalist? Because my religion taught me (by the way, I'm a Muslim) to life simple, to not wasting things, and also, of course, give charity as much as you can to help others. And do you think minimalism and giving charity like you mentioned in the video give a huge effect in your life? Thanks a lot and I hope you read and respond my comments :)
Dewi religious is a kind of belief, but minimalism will some how leads to the way of being religious. Of course minimalism leads to big effect to our life, make us more cherish the value of items we own, having better relationship with people, and like you mentioned, peaceful feeling in life. (Just my opinion, sorry if any offense)
I am also from Indonesia, and I am into minimalism, but I am an exmuslim (murtad). I was into sufism and stuff because I was learning how to live a simple life and tasawwuf / sufism is about that. However, then I realized that all religions are man-made, so I am definitely not religious anymore (I'm an atheist). And honestly, I am more peaceful now.
I like to spend money on courses! I love learning new things and online courses are so convenient. I'm still in my decluttering debt phase so not much goes to extras...when I do want to splurge I'll get some 'fancier' groceries and make a more special supper for my family.....oh! and travel-that's worthwhile spending to me :)

A little bit of background - I am come from Poland - a country that is developing fast but had a chapter of communism. "when I was in the corporate world, I didn't feel like I was contributing in the way I should have." Many people will fool themselves unto believing that if you're living the expected norm, you are somehow not providing any benefit to society. You see that a lot with people who quit their jobs, travel, or move out of their apartment and into a motored vehicle. There's this stigma that says the very minimum you could do for society is get a job working for someone else and get a paycheck to spend on yourself. It's ironic and sad to see people seen as "stealing from society" when they may in fact be doing far greater for the world simply because they aren't trapped in the mindset of living like everyone else
