  • A while back I purchased my most adored orchids in my collection, of all times! These are Sarcochilus Orchids • I don't know if I can ...
Sadly I'm not entirely sure they love my environment, especially this past summer. So I decided to give them a more humid environment! So I drilled and duct taped my Ikea cabinet and well.. it's now time to wait :)

Ever since filming this we've been hit with a cold front! 🥳 happy days and nights of 14C! so I placed some of the Sarcs along with some Australian Dendrobiums (kingianum hybrids) outside for a chill, let's see if there is a difference in spiking between those and the ones in the cabinet :D

The big PLUS about carnivorous plants is that they loooove fungus gnats! I have found that my butterworts (pinguicula), pitcher plants (nepenthes) and sundews (drosera) keep them well under control and they have the cutest blooms! I keep one of the three types on every orchid shelf. I water them with rainwater and let them eat up the critters. They also catch small ants, spiders, etc. Bonus, the pinguicula reproduce by putting out new rosettes which you can simply detach and sit on a bed of sphagnum. Voila, more gnat-eaters.

Sarchilus orchids are so beautiful when they bloom! I grow them in PA - USA and I have the same issues with humidity. Although they like their water, they do not like to be over potted and kept wet at the roots. I dry out slightly between watering and keep them in a slightly higher humidity area under lights. Figuring them out is so worth it for the bloom show!

Hi there Danny, I live not far from Barritta Orchids in Kulnura NSW Australia and have a few of their hybrid seedlings. It is a little humid here, I grow them outside and they receive afternoon dappled sun. I will move them under balcony cover if we get a lot of rain. But they are outside plants. Happy growing. Sarcs are lovely when they flower.

Bloopers rock! 😁 💖Sarcochilus, hope to have a couple colorful hybrids one day! Miss Danny this is a lovely video-the Sarcs in the rudsta with you in front.. I desire you to have great success & many blooms on these precious 🪴 plants. Excited to see blooms in the future.. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃🤗💕

    Good morning Danny,
I’m old and not too handy in following IKEA direction.
    Old school thinking,
never like to be told what to do but I digress.
So, as the result I always end with a couple of spare screws and not from my brain but these are real screws.
When I seen you beautiful cabinet it had inspire me to give it another go at it.
You can never have enough screws in your collection.😅
Thanks and take care and have a blessed week.
    🙏🙏🙏

Beautiful orchids!! I also have a converted Rudsta. The peg board from ikea will grow mold so I used a wire grid that I hung with magnet hooks from the back. It's works great😊

Hey Danni! I love Helloplantlovers’ channel too!!! And yes, I too drooled over the sarchos that he featured recently. I want to try a sarco or 2 as well. I’m hoping I will do well with them as I tend to be a bit of an over waterer with orchids. I do great with oncidiums so maybe I will do ok with sarchos.

I’d been eyeing sarcochilus for some time now. I’m so glad you made a video on their need for humidity because I’m more of a low maintenance orchid grower at the moment. I’ll have to reconsider this adorable orchid given this new information 😅
Also, yes to bloopers!!! I love it 😁

maybe some rubber lists will help seal it up? like with car doors? 🤔 the tube leading the mist into the cabinet could possibly be fixed/sealed with silicone?
also, I think your cabinet will be so so pretty if you spraypainted the background black to match the rest of the cabinet 🤩
wishing you luck with the cabinet and the orchids you wish to grow in there 💜

I did fall in love too with Sarcochilus after watching Matthew from “Hello Plant Lovers” and I bought 2. So far, I have not been very successful 🙁. My climate is very humid but very warm too and I grow them outside. Granted, they are seedlings so I have to show some patience. Just hoping I can keep them alive🤞🏻. Good luck to us both🙏

Hi watch Matthew from Hello Plant Lovers, too and he has also made me want these orchids!! They are absolutely beautiful, and I think Matthew grows his outdoors in Melbourne. Either way, I am going to try a few next spring and see if they will adopt to my indoor plant room. Love what you did with your cabinet and good luck with those beauties.

Australian here!!! These are very easy to grow but they like lots of light like an oncidium to cattleya light. They also do not like to dry out so keep them moist but not to wet. They are also colder growing then phals and cattleyas and vandas. They can take hot days as long as they cool down at night. 15-18 degrees Celsius. I have mine growing outside in Sydney and they are going great. we have day temps of up to 35 degrees and night temps down to 18 degrees in summer.

    • @Damien-hr4gz
      @Damien-hr4gz Рік тому

they can also take temps down to 10-12 degrees.

They also dont actually need that much humidity its quite dry here in NSW (sydney) 40% -60% Max

Hi, Danny! I stayed away from your channel for quite while... a couple of years I guess (nothing related to you, of course. You are gr8). So last week I watched your autumn tour and I found out you"re relying a lot on closed set ups for your orchids. I heard a lot from different growers about the importance of ventilation and letting the air be renewed to prevent diseases and etc. So you are going against "Da book" and your collection seems to be doing great. I'd love to hear a bit more about your experience regarding this aspect . Thanks and have a nice day!

Hey not really related to this specific video but.. Do you have video or could you make a video about what different orchids buds look like? As someone new to the hobby I broke my Cattleya bud cause I though it was dead (the sheet had dried). Very sad about that one.. And I mean spesifically the early stages before the spikes start showing 🙂

I love Hello Plant Lovers channel too! I actually lived in Melbourne several years ago and can vouch for it being somewhere which tends to have high humidity naturally. Australians call Melbourne a temperate climate (because it's less extreme than other places in Aus) but don't be fooled into thinking it's like Europe or the UK- it has hot humid summers and semi-cold wet winters. My hair was such a struggle with the humidity-I looked like Monica on Holiday from Friends 😅 You and Michael should do a Collab in the future if you get the chance ❤

Barrita Orchids, a sarcochilus hybridizer in Australia, does do flasking services. A flask might be your best bet to get the orchids you want of Australia 😅 Sarcochilus like charcoal and bark the most.

Akerne in Belgium claim they ship to E.U. countries and they have a nice selection of Sarcochilus. I wonder if you couldn't leave them outside all winter in Cyprus .. they can tackle pretty cool weather lows.

    Hi Danny!
I live in Hungary and I just bought a Sarcochilus hartmannii.
Here the humidity is around 30-40% during the winter and 70-90% in the summer.
I also use bark and sphagnum moss as a medium.
What do you think, can i manage to grow it, if I spray the medium (or the plant as well) on a daily basis and put some water under the pot?
    Greetings from Hungary!

Hope this setup works for you! When you went "let's meet this orchid, shall we?", I thought for one brief, anxiety-filled moment you were going to say Odontoglossum crispum! Don't get me wrong, Sarcochilus is WONDERFUL, but Odontoglossum crispum would have been a suicide mission in your climate - at least without some means of cooling the cabinet! 😅

Hi . I'm sorry I've forgotten your name. My name is Kerry. I live in south Jersey. I just watched your video on saccolis. Sunset valley orchid's in California breed's them. I don't know if they sip international. I bought one about 2 years ago. I lost 2 fans, it came with 3. So u called Fred Clark and asked what I did wrong. Apparently alittle to much water for my environment. I have watched Matthew with Hello Plant Lovers. He's Great. This time I listened more carefully and he is growing his outside under cover to get a cool down to encourage spike. The piece I have left has maybe 3 roots. So I have put mine out on my outer enclosed porch.just relocated to south Jersey. I have it going down to about 55 degree's.i not keeping her to wet, because cold and wet is bad as we know. Try to get in touch with Sunset Valley Orchid's. Big time grower. He also has interviews with other growers on UA-cam.Best of luck to both of us with these cute but fussy plants.
