God bless, brother. I am nostalgic for a period of time I never knew, but you did. My father is 90, and this is his style of music. And now, it is mine too.
God bless. God wants you around. You come from a generation of class and values. My father is 90, and he is still reliving his past and lamenting how things have changed. Yes, you were fortunate to have seen this true artist. Hold on to your memories. All we really ever own are our experiences.
Wow that's amazing
Are u still alive sir?
I was 6 years old but had two brothers 15 and 17. Thats all the music l heard. Still love it and I'm 83.
Awesome ~ you're still 6 years old kid. I think you mind stil young whenever you listen to this song.
Also I can image your brothers.
Thank so much~
That’s awesome❤️ there was nothing more awesome than to have him sing to me when ide visit him on the weekends. My grandfather Bob Eberly. I miss him still so so much!
Paul dou you remember world war?
Thats sad but nice. I hope you have a good rest of your life
@@michelleleeschaeffer3482 My dad had a lot of these 78s (which I have many of them now) Your grandpa was excellent as well as his brother Ray who was sadly given a raw deal by Glenn Miller.
As a young lad only 14 im glad i asked my dad what era this music was in. And i have found my soul.
A dear woman I cared for for four years died today at the age of 96. This was her favorite song; her husband sang it to her when they were dating in high school and the next 60 years after that. ❤️😢 I loved her and I’ll miss her.
Rest in piece
What a beautiful, romantic love they lived. ❤
May they both be resting in peace for the eternity.❤🙏
My dear father sang this often to my mother. She sing it too. My parents were married in 1941, and this song was part of the track of their courtship. Thus, it is very dear to me as well.
Hi I'm just a 17 years old girl now and listening right now to this beautiful music 🎶
Welcome to my world, Maureen.
I grew up listening my father singing this song, he was a tenor. Now he passed away, and I remember him in my mind singing me this song.
I am 82 and continue to like this song
your dad was twice as good as mine, he was only a fiver
Rest in peace
I was a child 4 or 5 and had teen cousins. I remember this song was played over and over. Still love the memories, they're gone but I'm 88.
Ευχομαι να φθασεις στα 100 ετων. Και να εχεις παντα υγεια. Χαιρετισμους απο την Αθηνα. 🇬🇷 🏛 👍
my mom used to sing this when shes cooking...miss them both
I just found a love letter from my Dad to my Mom pre- ww2 before they were married where he mentioned this song. He also signed a card Amapola that was sent with flowers. He later was a soldier and they got married before he was shipped out to Europe. After searching, I found this.
BobbyDan Such a beautiful story....Life might have been really simple and with more joy and love then.
So nice!
Bobby Wow that is terrific
How romantic!
I was 4 years old. Song was so beautiful. I’m now 86.
Am 89 years old and this brings tears -music was "romantic" . Enough said.
Are you still among us?
This is a deceptively difficult song to sing..with it's change of key..and change of tempo..bob Eberly has a magnificent command of both..his beautiful voice soaring..or deep with passion..The beautiful Helen O''Çonnell is magnificent! They were so incredibly suited to each other. What a time to have experienced this incredible music, the Bands, and the wonderful singers. I thank my parents and uncles for my love of this music..ballads..jazz..swing..all really coming from The Blues!!
i feel nostalgia....why.
i was never born at this time.
the feeling is not sad, but not happy either.
anyone have this?
I feel that too
+The Mini Melon was just thinking the same thing
Well some psychics say that you could have lived in several different time periods. Maybe you lived during that time, and it was your favourite.
You probably did have a past life during this time. You just don't remember it.
The Mini Melon j
From a time when vocalists were professional with voices that were practiced, in perfect tune and under complete control. Musicians were exactly that, were experts with their instruments, and together produced real music that blended together into a wonderful harmony of sound. How I miss that.
I,m 74 now, growing up in the 50,s this was the proper music that was played on the radio, absolutely priceless, what we have now is awful!
Just perfect, I love the music of the 40's and 50's, never get tired. And I fall in love every time I hear and see Helen O'Connell. and don't forget good old Benny and his clarinet.
I wasn't born yet but I heard my parents sing this song all the time. Even today, I can still hear it all around. Sweet memories❤👍❤
I am so glad I had the chance to enjoy a part of this era, how awesome it was
+Fazli Sameer ..................ditto
Just pure romance, where did it all go??? This was my fathers favourite song through WW2 and after. Lovely
Hasn't gone anywhere. YOU left.
?
where did the romance go?...It was blown up on a Sunday morning, Dec. 7/1941.
it was also the favorite song of my Father R.I.P. DAD
Romance is alive and kicking. You just need some luck in encountering it. When you do, grab hold of it, else someone else will.
These songs make me feel happy and serene. They make me less afraid of death too for some reason. They make me feel a certain powerful emotion... I don't know what you call it. I get a knot in my stomach and i wanna smile and cry at the same time. They make me feel hope, maybe?
Oui oui.
What a beautiful comment. You have an old, nostalgic soul.
Perfect explanation of how I feel wow
Helen y Bob: Un dueto elegidos por el destino.Sus voces, estilos muy particulares y una época de oro, vivieron para qué hoy sigan deleitándonos.¡ Gracias a este Canal por sus selecciones musicales!
One of my fathers favorite songs from this era .I was born in1946 and the big band music was our connection to enjoying the same music, and appreciation of music itself.
A boy found a dream upon a distant shore
A maid with a way of whispering "si senor."
Each night while guitars would softly play,
The tune seemed to dance 'round the words that he'd say:
Amapola, my pretty little poppy
You're like that lovely flower so sweet and heavenly,
Since I found you, my heart is wrapped around you
And loving you, it seems to beat a rhapsody.
Amapola, the pretty little poppy
Must copy it's endearing charms from you.
Amapola, Amapola, how I long to hear you say "I love you."
My mom used to sing this in our kitchen. I payed attention to the words I loved all those old songs it’s a shame the young people missed out on all of yester year and how good it was then.
Helen with those beautiful dimples and her pouting style of singing....How I yearn for those great days
This song was a gift from my mom, how she loved this song. Owed a liquor store in Great Neck in mid 70s, when Customer walked in, my mom was.there at the time and pure joy poured over her face, it was Bob Eberly, him and I became good friends, I miss him, but I have his music, and this memory, when I hear this song!
How great to see the images of these two wonderful vocalists from the 40s! I grew up listening to swing music, but for some reason I'd never heard the vocalized version until I was about 28 years old. I'd heard the instrumental version but never knew the name of the song. When the two came together for me, my heart exploded and it's been my all time favorite song ever since. A fiance' dedicated this to me so it has special meaning. He's one I let get away. Still, sweet memories are stirred.
Hello Sarah, How are you doing?
Sara are you still alive?
My Mother loved the Big Band Music so much, singing songs at home from back when. Learned to Love all music, feel Blessed,I do.
Helen had such a unique voice , still love to hear those songs.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Peter Taylor You're so lucky to have lived through that time.
Most beautiful song thank you for sharing ❤️❤️❤️❤️👍💯💯💯💯💯💯👏👏
I was not born during the years that Swing music was popular , both my parent's were born in the 1920's would always tell us about this great 1940 's dance music . Now that they are gone whenever I hear sounds like this makes me really appreciate such wonderful era of music and romance.
I love it!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Born: 1979 🤩🤩😍🙋🏻♀️
My favourite decades for music is 20s,30s, 40s, 50, some 60s, 70s, & 80s :)
Some of the best were made and recorded between 1911 & 1960
My favorite eon for music is the Holocene era
The....what?
You should check out Death Grips
this could be shortened to 20s-80s
Oh my God I wasn't born at that time. But I so happy to know these people that made my mommy and daddy dance the floor away!!! An evergreen song by two splendid voices and very good looking singers.
Helen O'Connell was absolutely beautiful.
How good is this?
So glad I was able to grow up in the 50's & 60's surrounded by the music from this era. Set my life up for an appreciation of many genres, as I took on anything from the Classics, to Al Jolson, to Led Zeppelin, with the journey and collection still expanding with today's music getting the occasional nod. But must admit that a lot of today's music is about the eye candy, rather than the music, not that I've got a complaint about getting an eyeful of the "beautiful" people, but it's a bit hard to see the wobbly bits on the radio. And does the actual music hold up on it's own then. Sadly, not always...
But in the end, great music is all about making your own mind up, and not following trends.
stevo53
+stevo53 This is the least pretentious "I like old music better than new music" comment I've seen. Good job!
By the mid 50s this was gone. By the 60s they laughed at it. It was really belonging to the 40s
.
I love Benny Goodman and the Beatles. I love Artie Shaw and the Rolling Stones. I love Jimmy Dorsey and Led Zeppelin. I love Tommy Dorsey and AC/DC. No reason why you cannot love both. I was born in 1936,luckily I was exposed to both great styles.
My father tell me about my grandpa, from Lima Perú. He loves to listen this kind of songs, in particular from Glenn Miller's Orchestra and Benny Goodman.
No one is making you listen to this great music, great musicians, wonderful singers .we can at least understand the words, not like today's music
Just love this .....wish I lived in that period.....I missed it by a few years but love the music.
I was in a band that backed Bob Eberly once. Played all of these songs. Those green eyes----
日本人です。この時代のヴォーカルの大ファンです。ヘレンはアイドル性と実力を備えたスターですね!
Dad was in the Navy during WW2...this was the only record they had aboard ship.....we learned to love this song....great memories.........
I too feel nostalgic since I was born in 1936.I remember this on the radio. This music never dies.
I was born I year later,oh how I love this song, brings back memories of happier days when life was simplier and beautiful!
... Обволакивающий голос Боба приятно слушать... песня - красивая, запоминающаяся... Спасибо!!!! ♥️🤗🥰🌹🌼
I once saw and heard Helen O'Connel on stage in Portland. She is lovely.
im so glad I live through the era of these wonderful songs and dance music.
i used to always ask my grandfathers favourite song when i was around 18 and he said he didn’t know. eventually he gave in and said he was walking his dog a few years previous and heard this song playing as he walked past a fair ground a few years before i asked him and this was the song that resonated with him in his later years. he passed a few years back and i listen to this now and again knowing we both listened to it many times together
This is a very beautiful piece of music performed here three yrs before I was born ..
Che voce straordinaria!!!
I traced my interest in music for y son age 44....in digging up neary 60 yrs....on our street was lot of older kids...tie summers in west tenn it was very hot and o air conditioners in 1942....so we heard swing music through te ope windows....Dorsey's, glen miller, woody Herman, Harry James.....when say a new Dorsey disk came out...it was played over and over.....I was age six but I learned a lifetime on Forrest ave....thank you for presenting these great swing numbers....jm

What stunning music. Thank God for UA-cam.
An age of music I am most grateful to have been part of.......
Oh Mel..most definitely. To listen..live to tommy dorsey with Bob Eberley and to gaze at Ray with Miller...to jitterbug with a partner who could jitterbug..to support the guys..but the music!! As a muso's daughter with a mother who sang professionally and played 78's all the years we were growing up, I have an abiding love for these wonderful bands and musos...and, of course, the composers.
I rather listen to old music than Than new
Maxx Ammo HAHAHAHHA
A lot of people do.
Yeah your mom told me she likes this type of music ;)
Simply because it's the best: a classic anything *always* works: timeless...
@@lazy50 wtf
Those time should have never ended. I would be more than glad if they were still be our times 😊❤
My mother was married the year this song came out - 1928. She had the record when I was a kid and I loved it then. Now it makes me cry!
You cry because you have a tender heart. You are a privilegied person. Me too.
I grew up on this music ---my Dad was a huge fan of Glen Miller & Jimmy Dorsey. --He told me Helen O'Connell was a true beauty with a smile that simply melted him. -------WolfSky9
Wolfsky9 , how interesting! Helen O'Connell was big with the college aged kids.
Amapola ( Pretty Little Poppy )
It was No 1 for 10 weeks in 1941

" A Boy found a dream upon a distand shore"
I can remember as a kid, my father particularly, listening to his cousins, Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey performing on the radio and TV. I still get a kick out of listening to them on Sirrius radio. Its is so sad for Swing listeners, that both of them died so young. I remember my Dad telling me about his time during the War, going to their concerts in Manhattan.
I love this song. Bring back memories of my childhood in sunny South Africa a very long time ago.
This gives me a cozy feeling, a feeling of happiness. When times were....simpler
seems beautiful women like Helen with beautiful voices like hers are gone never to return. such a pity the recording technology back then was so primitive.
Rob Grune of
A pity we had to put up with Bob Eberle on most of her songs before even getting to her. He puts me to sleep!
This song makes me miss him so much! I’m bob Eberly’s grand daughter. He named me at birth. We always had a strong connection. He was taken Way too early!
I am 67-yo, but my soul belongs to the era of our Greatest Generation with this kind of music. Good old days gone forever...
Bellissima i riporta ad un sapore perduto.
Interprétation fabuleuse. Merci
WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From a mad keen 74yo Aussie fan.
God---The music was so,so good---The Golden age of great music.

Hello Delia, How are you doing?
Se oli sitä aikaa joka ei koskaan enää palaa ! Aivan upea esitys !
Aivan! ..-Musiikki ja viihde oli silloin vielä taidetta!?
Helen O'Connor the Boswell sisters The Andrews sisters and all the rest of you in that magnificent era I would just like you to know how much I enjoyed you since I was a kid and right now I'm going to be 69 and I'm still listening to The fabulous 40s some of you or most of you that are not here any longer I just wish that if you are in heaven above that you know how much your legacy still lives on may you all rest in peace and God bless you
Great song.
Worth listening to in Spanish (Bocelli or Placido Domingo); Italian (Carlo Buti) and in French (Tino Rossi) All great examples and very different tempos.
what an incredible voice, from heaven to earth...
I know that I was a soldier during WW2 and died in battle. I was born in 1943 and never stopped feeling for these music.....
The 2 Helens,O'Connell and Forrest,what talents,may they live forever.
Saw them in the 1970's at Sunny Brooke Ballroom in Pottstown Pa. It still operates in 2017!
I love this song, from when I heard it in the50's it is so nice hearing it sgain in 2020!
WOW
Wonderful version of a great song by two fantastic vocalists & orch.
Why do people rave on about nothing & don't even bother commenting on the clip itself?
From a 72yo Aussie fan.
the sublime singer and accompanist is also good, childhood memories, wonderful. I love
Thank you sharing this beautiful music, fantastic band, fabulous voices, lovely clothes. Great music period !
One of the best versions I've ever listened to...
I was born in 1941 and my mother probably listened to this in the Hospital
love it, still so wonderful after all these years.
"Inside the wardrobe I found a tremendous surprise. In the back, almost hidden behind several hanging suits to which the scent of old mothballs still clung, were two objects: a horn gramophone, the kind you crank by hand, and a radio. Both were covered with pages from a magazine, which I reassembled: it was the Radiocorriere, a publication devoted to radio programs, an issue from the forties.
An old 78, covered with a layer of dirt, was still in place on the gramophone. I spent half an hour cleaning it, spitting on my handkerchief. The song was "Amapola." I set the gramophone on the chest of drawers, cranked it, and a few muddled sounds came through the horn. You could barely make out the melody."
(“The Mysterious Flame Of Queen Loana” (2004) by Umberto Eco)
I Saw them Live at Sunnybrook Ball room Pottstown PA back in the day! it was so awesome!
My mind is in a deep state of reminiscing & i was born in 1978!
Haha Jimmy broke his dumb REED!
im older than you |>
I hate you.
ok
Ha ha. I can relate! 1980 here. What does Amapola mean?
My wife and I listen to 40s Junction on SiriusXM all day, and whenever we heard this song, we thought the lyrics were, "Amapola, my pretty little puppy." We thought it was a love song for a dog, which we thought was really sweet.
Nice story. Definitely, my next dog will be named Amapola
My mum is 95 and I play this as her and dad use to dance to this and hey still romantic need more of this these days !!!!
I have been trying to find this tune as it wouldn't leave my mind. Now, here it is, posted by bigbandrenaissance. Thank you so much! I listened to this era when a child, while my Father and musical friends played their instruments on weekends. Lots of memories..

no seas tan ingrata y aaaaaamamé
Amapola, amapola,
¿Cómo puedes tú vivir tan sola?
Not relevant to the song but on May 24, 1941, this song was #1 and Robert Allen Zimmerman, better known as Folk Singer Bob Dylan was born that day.
WONDER WHY THEY THERE IS NO MUSIC LIKE AMAPOLA AND MARIA ELENA WRITTEN THESE DAYS ,THEY BRING BACK SUCH GOOD MEMORIES FROM THE 30S AND40S AWESOME
what a Beautiful Voice I don't know about everyone else , but these songs make me feel like I was there for some reason and it's a good feeling :)
love the way Bob sings it straight and Helen swings it Great contrast!
