David Paul Thank you David, this means a lot to me. It’s amazing enough that people watch my videos but for you to get inspired and do the build yourself is just fantastic. Thanks again! 👍🏻
Thank you! I really enjoy the power carving and have a commission to do a very large piece in the summer. Will be sure to post that one! Thanks again for the positivity!
Thank you! Very kind of you to say. On the strength of this video I got commissioned to make 40 of them for a company in New York, I’ll be happy if I never see another one of them again! 😉. Thanks for watching. Matt
Woodden Thank you so much! And I quite agree, historically people have gone out of their way to hide the end grain of ply, but I love it. You can create some gorgeous patterns. 👍🏻
Thank you 😊 If you make one please send me a picture on Instagram if you’re on it @mattberrycustom. I love to see people’s interpretations of my builds. 👍🏻
Thank you, very kind of you to say! The grinder discs are called flap discs and are available in different grades like sandpaper. I used an 80 grit to do the rough shaping, 120 grit for the finer work and 240 grit standard sandpaper for the final finish. Good luck with it 😊👍🏻
robrath31 Thank you very much. I try to keep things as original as possible, but I suppose pretty much everything has been done before in one form or another. Appreciate the feedback and I’m glad you enjoyed it 😊
Good morning, thank you for the comment. With regards to rotation, on each square I made a pencil mark 10mm from the corner and lined the corner of each subsequent square up with the pencil mark on the square below it. I ended up making dozens of these vases for clients and experimented with tighter twists, I went up to 20mm and it looked fantastic but was a lot more difficult to sand. Good luck and I hope you enjoy making one!
mark bennett Thank you so much! Many different projects coming up including blacksmithing, engineering, resin casting and more. Seen your stuff on Instagram, you have good hands and a good eye yourself my friend!
Wow, cool effect, how did its cousin at the end get made, have you made a square with opposite sides solid wood and ply the other two. I like that too.
Hi there, thanks for watching. It’s all made from ply, every alternate piece is made by gluing strips of ply on top of each other, each one cut to 3/4” - 18mm or whatever thickness ply you are using) so you end up with a square the same size as the standard plywood squares but with the end grain showing when it’s on a flat surface. Like in my Rockler plywood table video. When ground down into the spiral it creates that crazy pattern! if you need any further info drop me message through Instagram @mattberrycustom or through my website berrycustom.co.uk. 👍🏻
Hi there, I’m using flap discs in 80 grit, then 120 grit. They are generally quite inexpensive on EBay, I’ve found the cheap ones are just as good as the branded versions so save yourself some cash! Thanks for watching, have a good day!
Thank you, very kind of you to say! Try searching under “cylinder vase”. I purchased a job lot of 40 for £1 each as I made a lot of these spiral vases for a restaurant chain. Looking on EBay they are a lot more expensive now, maybe I’ve increased demand 😉 Thinking about it a tall drinking glass would work well too. Good luck!
Good morning. I don’t see any reason why not. I bulk produced a batch of these for a client and did most of the trimming on the bandsaw after the glue-up.
Basically a hand saw, a drill with a hole cutter to the size of the vase you have and an a ghetto grinder with flap discs in 80, 120 grit with 240 grit sandpaper to finish. I don’t make these anymore but I’m sure another viewer will be in touch should you want one making. It’s entirely my design but I freely let anyone use it.
Made one as per your instructions, looks great wife very happy. Many thanks.

Lovely vase, lovely presentation
Thank you for watching, I have had some great feedback from viewers making their own version of this vase. Some amazing interpretations on it. 😊👍🏻
Wow...... looking at the finished piece you would not believe how simple it is to make.. superb once again👍

Mahendra Tiwari Thank you very much! I’m very glad you enjoyed it! 😊
When plywood's end grain is high lighted in a piece like that the end product is outstanding.

Love it, good attention to detail as well, seen similar but done poorly, yours was quite nice :)

Hi, Great work 😁 just wanted to ask how you place each piece before glue, How much rotation for each?
Good morning, thank you for the comment. Great work, are you using regular grinding wheels on the angle grinder?
