I always liked to imagine a different ending when she said "until we meet again Captain Picard", she then snapped her fingers and disappeared in a Q flash.
And Picard would have called out "Q!"
Q, in keeping with his desire to be around humans would appear, then -snap- make the woman appear.
Picard would have called out "Q!"
Q appears behind picard leaning on his shoulder "don't blame me for this one this was all her" and then disappears again
That would've have improved the episode greatly (and I already quite liked it). That little bit of ambiguity would've really added to it. Maybe not exactly a Q flash, though, but something unique, so that she's just this mysterious being that didn't really need a ship after all and possibly completely unrelated to the Q.
Or he reappears and then states, "Sorry, I couldn't resist. Bravo Jean Luc, you have saved the Universe once again. And you are right she is a Charlatine, but I am so impressed that I just had to congradulate you. Bravo Mon Capitan." Just a thought.
I would have preferred a final coda scene where Data visits Picard in his quarters, only to find him in bed with Ardra.
Data: "Sir?!"
Picard: "Relax Mr. Data, beggars can't be choosers."

I doubt it. Eventually the Enterprise would of found the ship. Just a matter of time.

@Koowluh I didn't mean new tricks or trying to manipulate civilizations again. However, she did have a pretty advanced ship being able to do all the things she did, good engineering, she was smart, charismatic, had immense pride and was just a tiny bit evil. A great foil for Picard without being as overpowered as Q.
The writers didn't have to reuse the same plot, just the character. If she escaped here, there could have been a great number of possible stories to use her for.

One of the last great shows; the teaching was evident, the moral compass evident, the ethical behavior set as precent was clear.
It was, to be sure. Unfortunately as it went on it also was one of the first to become more and more "preachy," if you will, and the following series in Star Trek, perhaps following the social/political climates of the times, took that and turned up to 15 on the dial until they became unwatchable.

@@GP-rc3pt makes sense he would have some basic emotion, just not to the extent the chip allowed him.

"Oh don't worry Jean Luc, I'm not staying. But it was fun to watch. but then consider..." leans in closer and says in a more sombre tone "How lucky you were that she wasn't one of US!"
and slowly standing up while laughing maniacally, Q snaps his fingers and flashes away, leaving but an echo of his laughter to resound abit. Riker and Picard lock eyes together, and Picard stoutly says 'Engauge', and we get a pan-to-wideshot of the bridge. (fade to credits)

You mean hilarious.
I'm sure that was intentional ;-)
It had meaning of course he was winning.
It implies that Picard might be equally contemptuous and unimpressed by Q's "little bag of parlour tricks".
Picard has faced down many challenges, and still in his heart, he's not impressed, knowing that any 'powers' or 'tricks' is just some more advanced technology - even if far more powerful than Federation technology - it's still something just yet to be understood.
The OG Vala Mal Doran
I find it odd that the idea of a mythical person with magical powers offended Picard's modern sensibilities so much that he spent the entire episode trying to expose ardra as a charlatan. However, he then accepts Q who presents himself in the very same ways immediately at face value.
It's been some time since I've watched the episodes, but I believe the fact that Q is literally holding his ship and crew hostage went quite a ways towards convincing him to 'play along', if nothing else.
Q chased the Enterprise down at emergency warp and did far more than this girl tried to pull. Even if it turned out he was just using tech, his tech would have been far above what the Federation would have had.
@@Krahazik I don't buy it. A teenage alien put Riker in a holodeck and convinced him that Romulans put him in a holodeck who convinced him he was 16 years in the future with a son he couldn't remember. Of course this was all absurd to Riker who spent the episode uncovering all this. Like wise, a goofy man named Q could have put Picard and the whole crew in a holodeck and convinced them he had fantastical powers. Even better is "The Inner Light" where Picard was tricked into thinking he lived 40 years as a Kamin next to a sun that was going to explode. The Star Trek universe is seemingly full of races who can play mind games and convince anyone of anything. Let's not forget Commander McDuff who almost convinced the crew of the Enterprise to single handedly commit genocide against the Lysians.
Q repeatedly demonstrated that he represented a genuine threat to the crew - this was the deciding element. Picard, alone, generally rebuffed Q and insulted him at times, and challenged him...
...but when Q came at the ship head-on (as he does in the pilot), Picard cannot take the risk that it's real and that his crew may die. Especially when Q actually goes on to demonstrate that, whatever the source of his powers, they ARE real, and that people died (such as the crew lost to the Borg when Q throws them all into the Delta quadrant).
Picard never "accepts Q" at "face value". He responds accordingly - when it's Q and Picard alone, Picard distrusts pretty much everything Q says and does, and only goes along for the ride because Q leaves him no choice. When Q is doing something to the ship, Picard treads carefully.
This is entirely in keeping with his character and motivations. In THIS episode, Picard is dealing with something that he realises isn't an overwhelming threat to his ship, but may be screwing with an entire planet of people. Picard has a clearly defined boundary here between real and not-real, and pulls as hard as he can on the real side of the fence (compared to Inner Light, in which he has no way to escape the alternate life he leads, not even for a moment, so he can find no boundary to cling to).
With the caveat that episodes had different writers and characters often had contradictory attitudes in different episodes, it should be noted that Q didn't present himself as a deity and seek worship. I think Picard objects to exploiting the people's faith more than just the powers.
Its sad that this actress passed away. She was good. She played this part to perfection.
I can just imagine the hilarity that could have come from Q showing up if Picard had lost.
"Really, Jean-Luc I never thought I'd have to bail you out from something like this. This should feel incredibly humiliating and insulting. She's a con-artist with a ship. See here."
[Insert scenes of Q doing his tricks and Ardra being unable to stop him]
@TheseventyFour Q would have changed her into a real monster, no holographic projections needed. 😁
Q would have locked her into a dimension the size of a playing card if DC hadn't already done it.
Or Arda just laughs, and disappears, much to Q's consternation. Then he turns to Picard and suggests he try to never cross paths with her again, and looks uncharacteristically worried before he snaps himself away too.
That would have been the perfect ending.

There is a trilogy of Star Trek books called The Prey (Hells Heart, The Jackal's Trick, and The Hall of Heros) where the "Truthcasters" (Ardra's kind) start a Klingon war. The books reveal a lot about what capabilities her ship has in order to form illusions. Good read.
I always thought there should be an episode like this, but where the crew runs into a being that is utterly beyond their capabilities, such that the illusions are very possibly real. Leave it very ambiguous whether or not the being is truly all-powerful (or even divine) in nature. Maybe even have Q show up and be unable to comprehend if the being is merely a very advanced race or something beyond his abilities to understand. There's one or two episodes in TNG where they encounters beings/phenomena sort of on that scale, so there is precedent. The characters are sometimes just a bit too sure of themselves (Keiko's anti-Bajoran religion rants in early DS9 being an example), it's nice to knock them down a peg from time to time just to keep them from getting too insufferable.
Never to be seen again.
I loved this scene and the theme of the episode; Stewart is just brilliant here in a turn which must have played back to his roots in the theater, and he relishes it. The interplay between Picard and "Ardra" is a lot of fun. The only nagging problem with the episode is it seems to require the Enterprise crew to be super dense until they are not, particularly in way she makes the Enterprise "disappear." I am convinced someone on board would have figured that one out in very short order. Still, a very enjoyable episode.

I realize the snap of the fingers is part of the illusion of power. Like how assassins in black business suits, sunglasses, and Edo period weapons are much scarier then just a guy with a gun.
And the precise timing of the finger snap coinciding with the action helps with the illusion that you're directly causing the action.
"Good God WHY are we only using weapons from Japan's Edo Period?!"
@@junbh2 It's like what Megamind says, the difference between a villain and a supervillain is presentation
It would have been more fun of you had beans
I see your going in order. Glad to see it as I'm rewatching as well. Also sg1 was a fav as well, so man great scenes. S7e12 of TNG had one of the few scenarios where I felt Picard acted out of character. 24:24 Something to look at when you get there. Keep at it man. I appreciate.
Also the next episode, Data's selfless conviction. To be perceived as a negative, a fool or "evil" and yet to stand tall. Moments in film like that are sometimes a good guide on how to act in life. He took it.
Ardra, played by the lovely, if late, Panamanian-American actress Marta DuBois. 15 Dec 1952 - 8 May 2018
I would have liked to see a second episode later on with her. Much as Kirk had Mudd, Picard could have had her
there was a novel and comic book where she is there.
She would have been a great recurring villain even to the point of seducing Q to do her bidding.
she did make some appereances in eu material
Please. Q would have had the measure of her in nanoseconds.
The look on Data's face when Picard turns into the monster was priceless lol
There's a small bit of cinematography that I really like. When Captain Picard begins explaining what the con artist was doing, it started with the Captain circling around Ardra, the supposed equivalent of the devil, and source of mythos and irrational fear. When he concludes his explanation with logic and evidence, he ends at the Judge's bench, which when seated by Data, is the ultimate representation of truth and rationale.
It's the small things that make this show even better.
I wish the reruns were still on tv
I watch them on Paramount.
Hulu also has them and I think they may still be on BBC America.
There's episodes on BBC America right now. They run them during the day EST.
1:07 her earrings are not moving from the tremors.... good old camera shake effect LOL. How did they replicate the holography? Holograms need a projector of some sort.... shame her character never returned.
Picard said they took control of her ship, and that ship must have spare portable projectors aboard. The crew beamed them down to Picard. It is likely a small device concealed on their person, probably voice activated.
"I like the tremors" is one of my most-favorite lines in all of Star Trek.
Picard's voice is the real star of this show.
