Heavies are still better than Gallies ship-for-ship if not economically. As Japan it's going to be better to build for gallies early since you will be fighting in those in-land seas you are correct.
@@mees9704 Heavies are still fantastic for taking damage, its not economically efficient, but even having one or two heavies in a costal fleet can help you win fights, even though you will probably lose them

Needed a land holding next to Korea before invading Korea the -2 landing bonus is crippling. 100% a skill issue also he needed tech parity to not get crushed + better ideas than exploration for wars.
that or bait the troops to the north with a 1k stack doing a landing while the rest of the army lands in the south, you can usually secure the province before they come back/get enough troops ashore that theyre afraid to attack
If Tommy is doing an EU4 binge. He should try the Third Odyssey mod. It allows you to play Byzantium but in the New World. Its a total Colonization game with ALOT of personalized monuments. It really feels like building a nation from the ground up.

Mercenaries are the key to show if you know how to play the game, how and when use them. When you doesnt use mercenaries you are not showing you are good at the game, you're showing you doesnt know the best mechanics to grow

Tommy I have played 400 hours EU4 (which is not that much) and I feel your frustration, try to use mercenaries, play strong nations first (brandernburg, österreich, France, Spain) and having wins on those, then try Japan, Japan is a difficult nation on my point of view. the trick with the korea war is to have a big enough fleet to carry a 30 stack over. Otherwise they just stack wipe you.
